I was just so upset cause now Nadal is gonna win his 22nd grand slam. He's not as tired as Ruud cause Zverev unfortunately had to surrender. Now Nadal is gonna have 22 grand slams and Đoković 20 which sucks. And I really wasn't expecting this type of pre-injury performance from Zverev cause he's just so inconsistent.

My daughters were very competitive athletes in their teens, and suffered various ankle and knee injuries. The 13 year old went over during a jazz leap, and everyone heard the tearing of ligaments. It was a Grade 3 sprain, and physio/rehab took a year to return to competitive level again. She would have had an easier healing process with a fracture.

I had a really similar injury when playing football (soccer). What made mine worse was a) the fact that I actually ran (put all my weight and momentum) on the injured ankle -- Zverev didn't seem to put all of it, but he did push on it to get back; b) the fact that, not being a tennis champion, I didn't actually get treatment till 5 hrs later, when the ankle had roughly reached the shape and size of an angry, purple pumpkin. I tore two ligaments (I don't remember which though!!), was immobilized for 6 weeks, I hobbled for about a year, and it took me 2 years to be able to run and play football again. Even today I have days when I wake up with my right ankle stiff and painful, and it takes me a few minutes to warm it up again !

Havng sprained both ankles during my volleyball era, I know a thing or two about those injuries, and one thing here is very weird: Why didn't someone immediately bring ice and bandage? Wherever I looked and read on sport/medical sites, it was always said that as soon as you can put the ice and tightly wrap the ankle, the better, all in effort to mitigate the interior bleeding and inflammation.

One rehab device is called a "Wobble Board": it's a circular piece of wood with a hemisphere of hard plastic on the bottom, curved side downward. In order to keep the edge of the circle off of the ground, you have to balance yourself. It works all kinds of muscles but I do it for ankle stability. I would imagine surfers and skateboarders would find this easy.
Interestingly, it's easier to do while on one foot in the middle of the board rather than two feet at the edge.

When I was 25, I injured my left ankle coming down after blocking my friends shot in basketball. My posterior tibial tendon was streched just to the point of complete ruptrue, but was still intact. However, I couldn't walk on my pwn power for 18 months, had 6 cortisone shots in 1 year, battled tendonitis for 7 or 8 years, and never regained complete flexion of my left foot. I had initially walked-off my injury and felt the next day I'd be sore with a bit of a limp, but when I woke up to a black foot, I went immediately to the hospital. Sometimes what appears to be a routine injury can be something that last years or affects you the rest of your life!

If it is a sprained ankle, normally, for professional athletes to recover, it should take up to 6-8 weeks of intense rehab. For broken ankles, depending on the severity and how well he responds post-op, it should take up to 3-4 months for him to recover 90% and another month to get in shape 100%. HOWEVER, this kind of injury leaves a permanent mark on the athlete. Even if it is minor or major, he will never be 100% recovered. There will always be that 1% that he needs to recover, mental of physical. He will surely have days when he senses some irregular pain in that injury area. And he will be proned to injuries like this for the rest of his career. The probability is slim but it is there. So, I wish him a speedy recovery and for the best results to come after a full recovery!

Agree with you. For those saying this may just be a minor injury, are not speaking from an athlete’s point of view. Several tennis players who have sustained injuries (including to the ankle and foot) returned to tour play but never regained their form. They simply were not the same players that they were before their injuries. Hope this is not the case for Zverev though. He has a career high world ranking of #3 right now and has improved so much.

@@ny4000 I am not an expert on this but I can say from the point of view where I had to stay with my father to help him in his rehab. And he broke his leg , double fracture, which is far worse. And he had to endure more than 14 months of rehab. He is also a bit overweight and had to do sports and physiotherapy to restore his movement as much as he can. And until this day, 3 years from the incident, he has to stay with a bump leg for the rest of his life. He still feels pain and sometimes has to take pain killers for it. And this is from the point of view of a person over the age of 50 years old. In the case of athletes, chances of an almost full recovery are very high, but things will never be the same after such injuries. If this happened once, it will happen again. Question is how bad it will be next time or when it will happen. Hopefully, for Zverev, it will happen after his career is over. Because he still has a lot of years ahead and tennis is a very solicitating sport for the body. Also, we can see on Nadal how injuries affected his career. But he still had to fight so much through his injuries to return to the best shape possible. And even now, he feels slight moments of pain.

@@iurietivladut7607 the irony in all this is that Nadal came into this tournament with a nagging foot injury that everyone was so worried about. But it was his opponent who wound up injuring his ankle. You just never know.

Sprained both ankles during my basketball career. From experience, for about 1-2 minutes I’ve never had more severe pain. Him crying was an absolute common reaction to a severe ankle sprain and I felt his pain. So unfortunate as he was playing Rafa as tough as anyone, even better than Djokovic. He really is a talented man but he was playing the greatest French open champion ever. Barring injury he wil win it eventually. Plus, a lesson out of Nadal’s playbook, he showed tremendous class.

This happen to me while playing basketball. My foot (from spectators) appeared to go near 90 degrees from the rest of my leg. Got an X-ray the next day and had to use crutches for a few, then I limbed for the next few weeks.
I can’t go into a dead sprint anymore as it feels like my bones/ ligaments in my ankle shift downward which makes me trip, even though I didn’t catch my foot/leg on anything.

It's usually a hard court injury, that one. The red clay allows players to slide, which reduces the chances of going over on your ankle.
We've probably all done it at some time or other. It's rather painful, whether a light sprain, or a full blown rupture. I think basketball boots were designed to reduce the chances, as well.
No doubt we will hear how bad it was.
