Down here in Argentina we call it kakuy and the Indigenous people have an interesting legend about them: There are two indigenous orphan siblings, the brother, Kako, and the sister, whose name we don't know. Kako was laborious and dedicated to the raising of his sister, he loved her so much and he wanted the best for her, but she mocked him and made bad and heavy pranks to him. Once, Kako came back from hunting, tired, and asked his sister to prepare some water with honey for him to drink, and she did so but, in the moment she gave him the water, she spill it all over him. Tired of his sister's pranks and feeling sad and humiliated, Kako let a few days go and told her to go to the jungle to play a game. Once there, he made her climb a tree and, once she was in the top, he cut the tree's branches off, leaving her in the top, no way to go down. Desperate, the sister started shouting: "Kako, uy!!", meaning "Kako, I'm in trouble". The shout got louder everytime and her throat got hurt, at the end she could barely emit hoarse sounds. By the time, the spirit of the jungle looked at her with piety and transformed her into a bird for her to escape the tree, and her desperate shout little by little turned out to be one of the most singular birdcalls all around the continent. And that is how kakuy came to this world.
Other version says Kako wasn't actually his name, but a Quechua word for "stay" and that what she shouted was actually "turay", which in Quechua stands for "my brother", some say she even said both at the time, so: *"my brother, stay!"*

They are so adorable looking, but that call is terrifying!!
I am 39 going on 40 years old and it just amazes me how there are so many beautiful creatures in this world. This is the first time I ever seen this type of bird.
I'm almost 40 too, and I can't believe the Amish use Doordash.
I am 68 and I agree, I learn something new all the time and this is one of them.
I'm close to seventy, and the astounding diversity of life on Earth is finally sinking in
I’m 200 years old and I didn’t know this bird exists
Looks like he's part of the owl family. Because of how big its eyes are. Very unique the Great Potoo bird.
When he said they are not aggressive and live solitary life...I felt that
Deep
I think he's adorable😊😊
Actually REALLY beautiful birds!
In Brazil the Urutau (Great Patoos name in portuguese) is also called "Moon's Mother"
People also call it the Ghost Bird.

They're called ghost birds for a reason. That haunting bird call
They're so amazing!!
Showed this to my friend who’s easily freaked out and she just fawned over it, immediately saying, “it’s a baaaabyyyyyyy🥺💕💕” so it’d say it’s more cute than scary lol
What a precious cute bird. Wish we had them in the southern USA.
not too far away, in the grand scheme of things.
Don't you dare, the bible belt will be having a FIT over their calls at night. 🤣
Probably try to say a new demon was born on earth. I'll stick with the cicadas, no thank you, but they are adorable.
@@galacticalove is that "bible belt" in the room with you now??

@@galacticaloves someone raised in the bible belt, you are 100% correct. It's either a demon or food around here. They don't fund education well down here lol.
