    Great videos. I find the Angel wing Begonias to be one of the nicest plants, easy to care for, and propagate. It was my first plant as I got the Plant Bug some years ago. I have a suggestion about using Clay pots. It’s very important before using them to soak them thoroughly in a bucket of filtered water until the bubbles stop escaping from the pot. The bubbles show that the pot was dry and the pores of the clay were open. Through soaking the pot, it puts moisture back into the clay which helps the plant absorb the watering and not the pot. Most times if this isn’t done You will notice that the plants soil is always dry. This is because instead of You watering the plant, you are essentially watering the POT!! It’s also important for all your plants to use filtered or rain water. If not you will notice a white residue on the pots. This is calcium and other impurities from the hard water which aren’t beneficial to the plant. Through leaf cutting, stem cuttings, and also by placing a piece of cut leaf on moist soil are all methods to propagate this plant. The Original AWB is a very difficult plant to find and there’s 2 types of this Begonia. One is the Maculata Begonia and it’s a Hybrid of the Angel Wing Begonia. Although both have the typical silver spots, pink or white flowers, and the Angels Wing formed leaves there’s a few noticeable differences. The Maculata leaves are narrower as the broader AWB, and the silver spots are larger. Also the leaf color is different. ThevAWB leafs are a dull green and the Maculats are a darker green. Both enjoy humidity, but the Maculata doesn’t like water and should not be misted. On the other hand the AWB loves to be misted. I believe because the Hybrid was made by combining elements from the original AWB it lacks some of the abilities to fight off root and leaf rot and other illnesses. Try finding an Original AWB and compare the 2. The Original AWB is uncomplicated and beautiful when they Blum. Thanks for the video.

      Hi Brian
      Thank you for your lovely and informative comment. ❤
      That's a fantastic tip and it makes so much sense to soak the clay/ terracotta pot before using it to ensure the plant is watered and not the pot. I will certainly try that the next time l use that type of pot.
      I will keep an eye out for an original AWB to add to the collection. Yes, the Plant Bug is so addictive! Hehe! Have an amazing day and once again thank you for for comment, l have learnt alot from you. ❤

      Hi, thank you for this info. I noticed you mentioned stem cuttings. Am I understanding that part correctly: if I were to cut from the thicker stalk in the middle that the leaves are shooting off from and just put that in water, it would also grow roots from that piece?

    Hey hun thanks so much for the video ! I’ve had my begonia for about a year and a half now and I didn’t know I should’ve pruned her ! Now she is so long growing lots of new leaves upwards but older leaves die out so quick, now there is like a foot and half of stem with no leaf. Is there any way I could just snap the main thick stem and propagate the whole plant ?
    I’d appreciate any advise so so much thank you again for your videos !

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alison,
      Thanks for watching the video and great question! A begonia will tend to loose the lower leaves and get leggy over time. To make a Begonia more bushy you can cut/snap the main stem to the height you desire . This will encourage the plant to grow further down the stem. (I would cut in the middle where there are no leaves but that's just what l like to do to reduce the leggy look ). Keep the cuttings you have just taken and start propagating in water then transfer to soil once 2-3"inches of root has grown or you could dip the ends in a rooting hormone then place it back in the soil of the mother plant so a new begonia can grow and make your plant more full. I hope that helps. Happy Begonia Gardening! ❤️

    • @PlantNationMinh

      Hi The leaves will grow back on the stem of the original plant. I would not remove all the leaves as the mother plant will not have any leaves to photosynthesis.
      I would do a stem propagation as they grow alot faster. I would leave about 2-3 leaves on the stem propagation as too many leaves will make the plant focus on maintaining the leaves rather then growing new roots. Hope that helps. ❤

    I've had a leaf for about two weeks now in soil, it was looking a bit sad and droopy, I watched your video and decided to try water propagation... however I cut at a new spot just a tiny length away from the original cut instead of just placing the already cut stem in water, do you think this will harm it? Have I made a detrimental mistake?

    • @PlantNationMinh

      Hi Annie
      No, that should work fine. The only thing about leaf propagation it takes a long time for plantlets to sprout when transferring back into soil, its always worth a try. You can also place the cutting it into sphagnum moss or water and perlite to grow stronger roots. Hope that helps ❤

    I wish I have thought about propagating when my Begonia Maculata was bushy last year. I was also afraid of trimming and pruning! Beautiful red flowers came out last April. Now, I am only left with 5 long stems with only 1 or 2 leaves at the top of each stem! I do not seem to see any growth for some time and the remaining leaves are hanging on to their life! Don’t know what I could do now or whether I should just cut the whole canes to the soil!

      Hi Christine

      Good issues. You can propagate via stem cutting. They will grow alot faster then leaf cuttings. l would gradually cut one stem with at least 2 nodes (more roots) and propagate it in water. When you see the mother stem shoot out at least 2 new leaves then more to the next stem. I would not cut all 5 stems at once as this could stress out your plant and it could die. Hope this helps. Let me know how you go. ❤

    I just got my maculata 2 days ago and there are few leaves that have problems like they're burned and curly maybe due to intense light or maybe damaged during transportation. What should i do? Any advice pls🙏

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Great question.
      Once the leaves are damaged there is nothing that can be done to reverse the damage. I would not recommend to propagate the damage leaves immediately as it may place the plant under stress as the plant still needs to accumate to your home. I would place it in lots of bright indirect light and let the plant produce new leaves then you can prune the damaged leaves and see if the leaves are worth propagating then. Propagating from leaves takes alot longer then stem propagation.
      I hope that helps. ❤

    • @PlantNationMinh

      Hi Gem
      Oh no ! The stem that snapped off l would place it in water to grow new roots, replace the water once a week. Make sure no leaves are in the water just the stem. Place the water propagation in a warm area with bright indirect light to grow roots. If you have any single leaf then you can propagate those in water as well but they will take longer to grow. I hope that helps you save your Begonias! 💖

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anahi
      If the roots are 2-3 inches long its enough for it to grow in soil and make sure the soil is moist. If the cutting it left too long in water then it will be harder to acclimate it into soil. The cutting will end up being a water plant and it will then produce leaves rather then roots. Hope that helps. Happy Begonia Gardening ❤️

    I had always heard that a "cane begonia" without a node (just a leaf) would never turn into a full plant. would forever just be a single leaf. Is that not true?

    • @debbiefox6846
      @debbiefox6846 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is false. Cane begonia can grow a plant from leaf cuttings. It would be faster with a node perhaps but you can grow a plant just by laying the leaf on the soil with the veins cracked open a bit and it will grow baby plants from those points. It's very similar to starting Peperomia or Africa Violets from leaf cuttings. No node required.

    • @PlantNationMinh
      @PlantNationMinh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Adrian
      Thanks for watching the video. The time that the roots take to grow depends on the condition the cuttings are placed in. The more bright indirect light and the more warmth and changing the water once a week will promote faster roots. For mine the single leaf cutting took 3month for good size roots to grow. I saw signs of new roots after 6 weeks. @@lowadrian5565 Its worth it tho. If you would like a faster new plant then l would recommended to do a stem propagation with 2 leaves on the stem rather then a single leaf propagation. Decent size roots tend to grow in 2 month as long as its in the right condition. Also stem propagation will root faster and once transferred to soil will grow faster. Hehe l think l just wrote a book as a reply. ❤
