I should NOT have done this to my plant

  • I've kept this Pilea Peperomioides (Chinese Money Plant) as a houseplant for 4 years. I thought I could cut this plant and propagate it to make it a better looking indoor plant. I guess I was wrong.

    I love that you've said a few times that it's okay to be done with a plant if you're not enjoying it or whatnot. I've got a plant I kind of hate, but I've kept it alive and thriving the longest, so I've felt guilty about pitching it. That stupid thing is going away this weekend.

    • @sashalevage2550
      @sashalevage2550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mika Hist it doesn't. Some plant stems can root directly in soil with no roots. They then grow roots. Some plants need nodes to ensure rooting. You can propogate plants from cuttings, etc, and they'll eventually grow roots. Others won't. Depends on the type of plant, among other factors.

  • @philipplouden5892
    @philipplouden5892 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Interesting information. Kind of explains a lot of why some of my cuttings have failed in the past.
    I was recently wondering why anyone would bother to airlayer an easily rooted plant, but it makes sense when you think of how large the cutting to propagate may be.
    I wonder if that would have worked out better here.

    Great video, i had to research how to propagate Pileas after i overwattered mine, she was dropping leaves very fast and i think it had root rot. I cut around 7 cm of the top and rooted in water succesfully.
    I also cut and propagated a Begonia Amphioxus this time for aesthetic reasons, i think i underwattered that one and it also lost a lot of leaves and was looking horrible. The cutting i kept is doing great and i will probably try a self wattering pot with stratum this time :)
    I find it quite nice to restart a plant that is either struggling or looking crappy.

    You should just root that top cutting in sphagnum moss - works better than almost any other method in my experience! For Peperomia and pileas, and basically all other plants which can be grown from cuttings! Lol. Everything else is too dense I've found and it rots away.

    Some cut flowers (like hydrangeas, for example) will bounce back if you use hot or warm water bc it can push through the dense sap in the stem that would otherwise prevent it from absorbing water up through the stem to the blooms. Could this have been a possible approach for your pilea pep.?

      Wow look at us. Like two Lees in a pod.

    I've never understood the look of Pilea's being staked upright, it just looks bizarre to me. Mine is massive and full, flowing over the side of the pot with pups all filling up the top. Each to their own though, we all like different things.

    The lower leaves on my pilea keep dropping off I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The plant is healthy and growing and shooting pups but I don't want it to get a bald trunk

      Bald trunk is coming. Consistent watering, light and temperature can keep them longer but if you have seasons that's when it gets worse.

      @Kill This Plant unfortunately I also live in Toronto so the seasons are harsh.

    So: WHAT was the "huge" mistake, Lee? Not turning the Pepperomia often enough? Not taming it sooner? Or, what??
    Had this unwatched video in mind when I finally got around to trimming my flourishing Pepperomia this morning. I put the three clippings in water until I get around to potting. How long do you think this will take? I have not previously been successful at propagating anything in water... 😖
