Would love to know as well. I used a similar set up back in the older flight model around 2018. But I also have pedals to control forward and backward and roll.
I gotta say, his control scheme seems whack. Not only is he twisting to roll (meh, but whatever) but he is pitching FORWARD his LEFT hand to pitch UP? Say whaaaa. Lol. Any jet / fighter would be right flight sticks: Forward pitch down Back pitch up Left roll left Right roll right. I don't know where he gets off binding pitch non inverted to his left hand...😂 I mean, he would probably kill me in a fight, but just cuz happy Gilmore sinks a hole in one with a hockey swing doesn't mean he should be teaching people how to swing a club. I'll listen for the tactics thought :). For me... Right: Forward pitch down Back pitch up Left roll left Right roll right Left stick on z extension Forward is forward Back is back Right is right Left is left Z axis is up and down, double bound with hats should I prefer to use them Yaw left is rudder left Yaw right is rudder right Toe break right doubles as strafe right Toe break left doubles as strafe left Another hat gives me up/down/left/right just in case I want to use my thumb to make small quick movements landing or jitter movements in combat. All seems pretty logical, but hey...wtfdik 🤐
@@Casbelunah bro right stick pitch yaw, left stick U/D/L/R strafe, left twist roll, pedals fwd back. More intuitive and easier to aim in space… there’s a keybind to swap yaw/roll that I will be taking advantage of once we get master modes and control surfaces for atmo flight
All the comments here seem to be focused on your control scheme and I'm over here thinking about using strafe to fine tune the pip on target. And I mean, it makes perfect sense now that I think about it. I think back to playing FPS games on a controller and I would do the exact same thing. Use the right stick to aim quickly and close to the enemy, and then strafe that last little bit to line up the shot. Strafing in a ship, much like in FPS, is a much slower control. Perfect for reducing the chance of over correcting. I've been a fairly competent combat pilot in SC for a long time (and an even better racer), but for whatever reason, I never thought to try this. I generally think of my strafing movements as being evasive and use my rotational controls to aim. Anyhow, thanks for the tips man. Can't wait to get home, give it a shot and see how it goes.
Not a dry topic at all! Really glad you did this video and explained your thought process. I have just set up my dual stick so loving to see how successful pilots think through their controls
That's a cool video, thanks for that. May i suggest you to add or do a video about your in game settings, especially talking about ESP and joystick curves for players who want to understand what ESP is and how it's improve AIM. It would be awesome.
I agree with Josh. Personally I'm new to flight/space sims this one being my first, so my knowledge of settings, controls etc is limited. I know a lot of people, including those who have played other sims, are as clueless as to what the settings do and how to use them to your advantage.
@@Avenger__One new to the channel. Your tracking and knowledge for this game in regards to piloting is next level. Did you ever do a flight controls video?
I use duet T16KMs, with the left stick thrusting fore / aft, strafe left / right and strafe up / down (twist), while the right stick has pitch, roll and yaw (twist). Due to tremors, I've keybinded many of the needed functions (landing gear, open/close doors, cycle missiles, PTT and many others, while the mouse and keyboard are used for "On Foot", "EVA", "Medpen", "F1", "F2", "F4" and others (sticks map available on request). ;-)
So a small technicality I believe. In Lykosaur's space combat video, he mentions that when you have analog control over strafe, you aren't actually setting your desired acceleration in a given direction, but rather your desired velocity. The flight computer will then devote 100% of it's available thrust in that direction until you reach that desired velocity, at which point it will stop accelerating. For example, if you hold your stick at 50% of the way to the right, your ship will then accelerate at 100% thrust you until reach 50% of your maximum velocity going to the right, at which point it will stop thrusting (0% thrust) in that direction and you'll stay drifting in that direction at 50% of your maximum velocity until you change your desired velocity.
This is why if you have your speed limiter and thrust limiter set to max, your movements can still be a little jerky when trying to land as you'll still be getting 100% thrust in small bursts as you adjust what your desired velocity is.
Same settings here except the fact that I prefer to keep the roll on X right axis and the yaw on pedals axis (the central one) to be able to be full operational on atmospherics conditions without to much changes on the way I pilot. I would be glad the fly with you on day.
This is a good video. Really got me thinking about the way I have my controls laid out. I feel like I have pretty solid control over my vert thrust with the toebrakes on my TFRP pedals. That, combined with left stick thruster control leaves me feeling pretty sharp. You make a great point about distributing the work that each input is doing, like not leaving too much to one hand.
It all makes sense now! I've been watching your videos while I gear up to run SC and your method of rolling to follow the target and then using pitch and up strafe makes a lot of sense. But on so many dual-stick videos I saw people putting strafe up as left stick twist, which seems dumb if that's going to be a main control you're using. I was thinking of having throttle as left stick twist but having it on pedals is brilliant...just like driving a car, as you said. Not sure I'll be able to spring for all this $$$ hw for a minute but now it all clicks for me, at least in concept. Thank you for your informative vids!
After a whooooole lot of trying out different setups, I finallly came back to this option. Although after my first practice in learning to fly my sticks a different setup felt natural to me. But as far as combat goes, this one feels much more natural to combat. Not that I really needed to watch this video to confirm this, but it 's interesting we both have the same conclusion about which combat setup feels most natural. Instead of pedals I use my omnithrottle stick like I do on a motorbike, but with my left instead of right hand.
Bro, your controls are laid out exactly like mine. Dual sticks with pedals. Glad someone that knows what they're doing also feels this way is the most intuitive.
What option do you set to control the fwd/bk with the pedals? Did you have any issues getting both sticks and pedals working? SC only seems to recognize two sticks or one and pedals for me so far. This control seem seems so intuitive I can’t wait to try.
I just got my dual TM16k's. I've always pictured how I want to do things, but you've helped me visualise an alternative that is worth consideration. I really like it. I will say, though, without trying to sound negative, it would have been helpful to include an alternative for those without a foot pedal setup. It's now on my list of things to add, but damn... I'll just have to adjust the recipe and season to taste until then. Thanks man, much appreciated!
Buzzkiller has a setup for no pedals. Essentially throttle is controlled by the left stick forward and back and strafe up and down is controlled by twisting the left stick
This is how to properly play 1st person shooters as well. People can out-maneuver your aiming more easily when you don't add movement to compensate for overshooting or chasing with your crosshair.
Very interesting, I use the same peripherals but right stick is pitch and roll, left is strafe fwd back left and right, twist is up down. Pedals are yaw on the z axis and right pedal is also strafe up, left pedal is strafe down
I never thought to use my pedals for thrust. I currently use them for roll. and my left stick controls forward, back, and all strafing. I'm going to try this out... cant wait to crash over and over trying to break muscle memory.
Thanks a lot, now I have to go get Rudders LOL. I like your take on them and it makes sense. I just switched to a HOSAS setup with a Virpil on the right and VKB Omni throttle on the left, been considering rudder pedals and I think you have helped solidify my decision.
I am just moving over to a set of "premium" sticks and pedals, and trying to re-program my brain on how I fly. The explanation of the left stick, and how you push the pip with strafe, is probably the biggest thing that I find myself trying to practice with now.
yup, i use this config too. right stick is ONLY for "aiming" left stick for moving the ship itself (up, down, left, right, roll) i think i need some pedals too, for forwards / backwards. typicall gamepad mapping, i guess thats where it comes from
Since I only have one joystick with throttle (Thrustmaster X HOTAS), I use the hat on the joystick for the strafe movements. I guess it's not as precise as using two joysticks (it's just an on/off switch, not gradual), but it gets the job done. I've been watching your videos for hours. Your techniques and teaching skills are excellent. Thank you very much for sharing!
The thing with traditional airplane control schemes is, they originate from real life planes where flying and maneuvering was the main concern, not aiming your nose. Airplane or spaceship shooter games are very different in this regard.
Dual sticks are awesome. I have X52 for the right hand, TM16K for the left hand (vertical and lateral movement). G29 steering wheel pedals and the combined axis via Joystick Gremlin, vjoy & HidHide as I have two Cougar MFD panels for extra buttons, along with the keyboard of course. I roll by pushing the right stick left and right, yaw is on the twist. It works for me as it's habit. I could change it up with practice of course but it doesn't feel as immediately natural. Left stick is great for vertical and lateral movement & yeah the precision is off the charts. With any control set up you have to make it feel as natural as possible to you and practice it. Tweak the sensitivity & dead zone for extra comfort. You could add extra sensitivity at the more extreme ranges however those are extremely rare occurrences in dire situations. No one can understand the flexibility of the HOSAS set up without being able to experience it for themselves, it's truly a game changer.
Nice set-up - it takes a while to find what works. I use the CH joystick and throttle, with Saitek combat rudder pedals, (I use the pedals to roll, and then the right stick the same as yours). The CH throttle also has a nice analogue thumb joystick, that I set as the strafe thrusters, like your left stick but you also get use of the throttle which I find easier to have at a set power without having to hold it there. For me, the main issue with 2 sticks was the throttle - sweet you used pedals (could driving pedals work as well, they would probably transition from full power to full reverse quicker).
“Not going to be a super exciting video…” yet appreciated more than you know. Watched this when I got my sticks, back because I have rudders w/ pedal now. Just learned a discord channel I was invited to MONTHS ago because my main interest is ship combat is the community you’re in/ is yours, or what ever. Wanted to get some muscle memory first. Tested that on the vanduul swarm with a random the other day and came out on top. Own a glaive now :) Thanks for sharing and all the videos.
7:10 i've set up my strafe and roll on keyboard with the curves advanced settings ingame, this gives me a more analogue-feeling digital input, that ramps up to 100% rather than instantly. Not comparable to joysticks, but much better than leaving it purely 0-100%
I use my left stick for all strafing and absolute throttle, with twist for up/down strafe. I put pitch/yaw/roll all on the right stick, with yaw on the twist. The reason I do it that way is because regardless of the attitude change, my right stick is always physically moving the same way my actual ship is. The ship simply follows the stick no matter what I do. I mean a twist is literally a yaw deflection, and moving the stick left or right is also a physical roll of the stick. How I think about vertical strafing on the left stick is kind of like a screw, which already associates a rotation action with a vertical displacement. For people without foot pedals. Edit: my overall keybinds philosophy is to keep related systems as clustered together as possible, so there's a feel of having sections dedicated to specific ship systems. So with that in mind I definitely wouldn't separate yaw from pitch and roll, as they are all attitude changes. Likewise throttle and strafing are all types of translation motion, so they share a common controller.
I also put speed limiter on the left throttle slider, and the less-used engine throttle on the right slider. The right slider changes to control mining intensity or scanning mode width in those modes. This frees up my mouse wheel to basically always be zoom.
Interesting setup. Obviously it works for you. I use a Warthog HOTAS with TPR pedals with roll and pitch on the stick, forward and back on the throttle, yaw on the rudders, strafe left and right on the toe pedals and brute force strafe up and down on the top hat on the throttle, with FINE strafe up and down on the throttle mini-mouse axis on the throttle. I think we have similar mentalities on what is important, but different hardware to get there. You're just better at it lol
I'm using warthog too, i got roll and strafe on rudders, yaw on stick (the mindfuck lol) Upstrafe is on the left throttle handle, but i find it really difficult to get used to manipulating both throttles independent so most of the time i find myself just using throttle thumbstick for upstrafing which sukks :D i feel like our setup is not made for this XD I really like the right throttle ministick for strafe tho, i might steal that lol
How do you do FINE strafe? Just bind the UP/DOWN STRAFE to the Y axis on the throttle mouse? I'm curious to try this. Do you really do full BACK/FORWARD on the throttle? I hate having both so much. I always set it to forward only and use a back strafe binding on the thumb hat. Do you find using back that much? Part of the problem I have is I mainly fly big ships so this fine control is irrelevant for what I do mostly as those ships can't perform that way. But I want to get into fighters and PVP.
@@jwpipes47 Yes. I use back that much, and it seems intuitive to me to have a neutral band set (deadzone) with anything forward of that moving me forward and anything aft of that moving me backward. My strafe is bound to a mini-stick I replaced the minimouse with. It is a great addon by DeltaSim. It allows full analogue control (though I aggressively set the curves because it's a ministick).
I'm glad you told me that strafing can be bound to a analog axis what's currently using a thrustmaster warthog throttle using the POV hat which is a digital press I ordered the cm3 throttle which has an access for the index finger
If star citizen simulated the lateral G effects (like the game do it positive and negative G) players wouldn't use yall to turn the ship anymore, they would start to fly the ship like a airplane, because irl, positive G is always the safest one for the pilot. But for now, players will still take advantage of this problem to do those high Gs lateral turns
Well I'm glad it doesn't because then it would become the next generic flying game. Star Citizen is something new when it comes to the way you fly and we should appreciate it
@@Gortosan it's generic right now, high G lateral turns is the most generic thing in this game because it destroys the immersion. Let's be honest here, star citizen is that way just for mouse players to have advantage against flight stick players, to sell more copies becouse mouse players are majority, it would be more hard for mouse players to fight having to roll the spaceship.
@@Joshua-by4dc Make it fairer for everybody by slightly/moderately increasing the black/redout effect for lateral Gs. Make it less effective but don't take it out of the equation completely would be my suggestion. I see where you're coming from but making it less attractive for mouse players would be the dumbest move from the devs. This game tries to be an mmorpg whilst clearly being part of a very niche genre. I don't want Star Citizen to come to a point where it doesn't know what it wants to be. We've seen what happens when we look at Tarkov
@@Gortosan but it's not fair for everyone, mouse players have advantage, becouse mouse is more precise, it would be more fair if mouse players had to roll the aircraft to make turns, it's more realistic, it's more visual interesting, it's more fair and it's make more sense, since the game already simulate positive and negative Gs.
I have a very similar setup as you, only difference is I use forward and back on the left stick to thrust and reverse, while using the mini stick on the left hand to ascend/descend. Makes somersaulting (something I abuse a lot, especially in atmo) very easy for me. Also I don't have pedals.
Whenever somebody start off their ttech talk with "this works for me, it might not work for you but I recommend giving it a try" you know they are A) self-confident about what they're presenting and B) not selling something (i.e. demanding you stroke their ego by doing exactly what they do); and it adds so much to weight of their delivery. AV1 is clearly a master of what he's presenting, you don't even have to watch his myriad of videos as evidence of his skills. also, when he likened his flight controls to a first-person shooter, I nearly sprained by neck nodding so hard. 🤣 Anyone use a stick + mouse setup? Never tried it myself, but it seems like a winning option as well.
Just getting back into SC after a couple years hiatus... Watching a lot of these kinds of videos to get me on the right track. Good STUFF! Didn't go straight for Virpil gear but settled on dual TH T16000m and throttle and rudder. I got rid of that rudder ASAP. Didn't like the feel of it at all. The sticks and throttle are acceptable. And will be marginally better after some mods and better grease. For thrust I chose the TH T3PM racing pedals. They feel sturdy and have magnetic sensors. All i need now is an extra set of springs to get the right feel for those pedals. So with thrust on pedals i also have strafe on left stick, although for me it feels more natural to pull back to strafe up and push forward to strafe down. For now I have roll on Z axis right stick but might switch that to left stick as well.
Well, I feel good that your video just gave me conformation that my idea was good. I had come up with the same idea of using my pedals and stick axies with the exception that I plan to reverse the strafe up down. Im an old helicopter guy. Left hand feels natural for the pull back on that stick to be up :) Thanks for the video!
I know you have a combat basics playlist, but I would be interested in a hardware/binding/curves playlist too in terms of what you use. It never once occurred to me to use pedals for throttle, and it actually makes a lot of sense. My right hand is handling roll on the twist axis with yaw and pitch as well, and then my twist axis on my left does up/down thrust which puts a lot of work into my right hand for targeting and my left twist is not exactly intuitive. It will take a long time to unlearn roll in my right hand, but I might try it. I do really like using left y axis for up and down thrust, at least notionally, but to try that would require buying pedals or find another home for throttle. I mean I already unlearned right hand x-axis roll, so what is one more thing lol. I do think my setup may be better for decoupled debatably, but I never fly decoupled anyway.
I know this is old but just watching as managed to get two sticks. You could always bind forward back throttle to right hand twist (that's what I'm going to test)
this was super helpful! I currently play on a controller but are planning to switch to sticks. this is the first layout that I come across that would fit my play style.
dual constellation delta sticks. but i run pitch yaw roll on the right stick. all strafe on the left. ive been using up and down thrust to help the turn fight for some time. but man. i enjoy watching the way you work your setup. not my thing but still very much respected.
I was totally surprised to hear you say your roll was left hand twist.. controller player here, so I can’t really talk, but what I have works for me.. at least I can feel good knowing that we both have pitch/yaw on the right stick, plenty of people tell me to have roll/pitch instead like an airplane
Great explanation! Gearing up myself here too, from old X55 to Virpil controls. I guess, it will need a lot of training and tweaking. Thx again for the vid o7 see you out there! For the Empire!
Recently got a pair of vkb gladiators, my right stick is the same as you besides I have roll on twist axis. Left one forward back side to side and up and down. It's been working but I feel like twist on my right stick is gimping me in fights. I think a set of pedals is my next buy. Good vids man learning alot!
Ohhhh so that's why my bro sent me his controls exactly duplicate like yours! We both have Thrustmaster so they're both the same. Now makes allot easier.
This is amazing. I just discovered you through the SC subreddit and I have the exact same control scheme, because it always made the most sense to me. Heck yeah, pedals for thrust!
I feel like a thumb stick on top of the right stick to control side to side and up down strafing with forward back and roll on the left stick would be ideal
Try it out and write some feedback here! One of the key factors I'd like to hear in your feedback would be how you manage the load of simultaneous actions a hand has to make vs splitting to the other hand.
I'm not sure if you already have this, but if you could do a video with a camera on your sticks to see how you use them while you fly would be awesome. I'm trying to imitate your setup and play style as it's clear you're the best pilot from all the SC videos I've watched.
Very interesting stuff. However I wonder how exactly you have it all mounted? Just to a desk? An aluprofile rig? A special chair? How. And what monitor..
Awesome video! That’s not the first time I’ve heard the concept of using strafe to guide your aim. I get the concept, but when I try it in combat my ship never seems to want to strafe enough for me. I also fly the arrow.
Personally, my forward/backward is on the twist of my left joystick, while my roll is on the twist of my right joystick. I don't have rudder pedals at the moment, else I would probably put then both on it.
I play SC with an XBOX elite controller. Rarely have to take my hands off as I use several modifiers to basically access everything with a certain profile. I am curious to create a new remap in reWASD using the up/down straffe on left stick and pitch/yaw on right stick, then roll on two upper paddles and thrust forward/back on lower paddles. Dedicate that whole profile just to flight as if the sticks were hosas. It's alien to me because I'm school and so used to hotas and twist being yaw and x axis being roll on stick. Gonna take me time to learn your method but want to try it.
Just started my SC life, currently researching the dual TM16000m setup as my first day flying today was a joke w/KB&M (bought the Syulen) …came across your page, plan on digging in hard and learning proper. Thx for posting this vids bro, def looking forward to all of them, and finding a HOSAS deal w/pedals 🤙🏻 lol
@@jamesgraham2961 so I’m liking HOSAM (hand on stick and mouse) a lot, and wanted enough buttons on my mouse and thruster stick to not take my hands off them at all while dying. Currently using my tried and true Asus Spatha mouse and loving this magnetic based (vs resistance spring based) Thrustmaster SimStick with all of the different buttons and analog mini stick. After a lot of research I feel like this is the best option for HOSAM, although I could find a mouse with more buttons this setup seems perfect so far so I never have to lift my hands while in flight 🛩 still want pedals tho, just cuz lol
Interesting setup! I’ll see if I can train myself to fly it like you do, I need pedals though. I have same joysticks you have, but configured them similar to an RC setup for drones. My strafe is the left Z axis and yaw the right Z axis.
I'm a basic layout guy, so don't mind me, but the left stick strafe makes sense, unless you are tracking in an asteroid field. It sounds easier to get tunnel vision try to strafe to meet the target and accidentally hit a meteoroid. But absolutely, that is a fine tuning to meet the pip. Rotate and raise. Easy. But could also be done if you adjust the sensitivity curve of the sticks, no? As in low stick input, low speed movement, full stick, full movement. Or was it that the buttons adding too much of a control problem for just one hand, while your other was idle?
I heard where A1 talked about his foot pedals, did I miss out on his stick suggestions? lol Fundamentals are never boring. Like Bruce Lee said, I don't fear the man who knows 1000 punches but the man who knows 1 punch and practiced it 1000 times.
I have been wanting pedals for a while now. I have thought about using them for thrust for years. Grrr. I currently use dual stocks but i have Pitch, Yaw, and Roll on the twist of right stick and then strafe on X, Thrust forward and reverse on Y, and Up down on the Twist of the left stick. Using the twist for the Up down is a bit more difficult than using up down on the stick i think may be. Because the sticks X axis is so much more different feeling than my up down Twist axis i think my brain just cant get that perfect balance for making those fine strafe adjustments to keeping the reticle on target. It just feels slightly unbalanced. Its going to take some getting used to though if i get the pedals because i have been doing it this way for so many years now. Should be an interesting experience.
Lol, came to almost identical scheme. :D The only difference is I use left twist for yaw and left-right on right stick for roll. This was because I used it in Elite Dangerous where the roll + pitch was the fastest way to turn. Other than that, the same controls. :) Even the car-based front - back scheme on pedals. :DDDDD This made me genuinely laugh.
I've always felt the right joystick should basically be aiming your reticle on a 2d plane, with up/down, left/right as starfighters are able to maneuver via yaw plan exponentially better than an aircraft. Definitely looking forward to receiving my second virpil to give this configuration a shot. Have you made any changes since this video?
Interesting setup! I run the Logitech/Saitek X-56 HOTAS, so I have all my strafe movements bound to the mini joystick by the thumb on the joystick and it works pretty well for me so far.
I appreciate the effort here in making this video. Control and the theories about the human interface devices' application are a strong starting point for anyone trying to "git gud" many creators gloss over or completely ignore.
Thanks for another great video. I've got a couple of NXTs and love them. I use a similar setup to others that have posted in here wrt mappings. Damn you though! Now I'm looking at rudders! :) Cheers
Finally taking the time watching your videos, certainly thinking about what do change with my controls (I have no pvp only setup or anything, my combination rn is off the charts for anyone but me) :D definately upped my first Impression I had of you, during the Squadrons days - but that whole community was awkward anyway ^^ keep it up!
Watching this video for the first time now and realised, that I am using exaclty the same bindings on the same axis (sticks and pedals) for years now. The 1% is near baby, oh yeah! :D
You said that when you push down on your left stick, you strafe UP and when you pull back you strafe DOWN right? To me that seems counter intuative what the ship needs to do. Push DOWN for strafe down ie. down= go down and pull up=strafe up?? guess we all have our preferences.
Nice vid A1. I like to play standing up so I don't see ever moving to Pedals. I use dual Constellation Alphas as well. Working on time on target and precision. Not quite at your level and seeing your setup I can see some reasons for that. Keep up the good work on these tutorials
Got the same setup but got, my roll on my left stick x axis i just cant give it up, but probably be better for aiming but it's so fun to fly like this🤪
@Avenger__One: Do you think it's a big deal to reverse the left hand? To me it seems more natural that way and kinda like the right hand. Pulling the right hand raises the aiming reticule, but pulling the left hand lowers it?
Awesome bro, I also been preaching control as well! It would have been good to go over the reasons why you may have your curves or esp settings setup. Most of all joystick saturation 😉
Interested in that too, especially for strafe stick/left stick where i think that, aside from landing situations, you would just want 100% thrust all the time, right?
I have just gotten dual sticks yet do not have the pedals I am keen to try the left stick control as you mentioned yet forward and back are currently thrust and back strafe. Any suggestion for throttle appreciated 👍
Super informative video, thx! Based on your suggestion I just got the VKB pedals and start training now :) Over that I would really love to see how you mapped your Constellation Alpha Joysticks.
Man, such great content! I’m pulling out my rudders this weekend to try out your setup. Seriously great work. Any updates post IAE re’ best fighters (I’m not interested in the vanguard series). Many thanks
I'd be interested in more about your bindings. What targeting commands do you bind? Which axis do you put curves on. I run dual alphas as well, with a Virpil throttle and pedals and have recently redone all my controls, I'd love to look at yours and see if there's anything more to steal in order to better optimize my setup. I've watched a few other YTers binding videos for hints, Noobifier, Blackmaze, and Buzzkiller. After watching this, I moved my thrust to the pedals, like you said, more intuitive. I moved space brakes to left pedal, and am working out changing right pedal to a button so I can put boost there. Keeping it intuitive so it comes to mind easily. Did you curve your thrust? Trying it initially it's hard to find the feel at SCM level speeds, so I feel like it needs a curve,
Any recommendation on pedals? Been considering buying the most basic Virpil WarBRD Rudders for throttle but i see you can get more advanced ones with toe pedals as well but not sure if its that necessary?
Button bindings on the sticks would be awesome too, interested to hear what you have bound
Did he ever post his bindings or upload them so we can use them? Been looking....

Say whaaaa. Lol. Any jet / fighter would be right flight sticks:
Forward pitch down
Back pitch up
Left roll left
Right roll right.
For me...
Right:
Forward pitch down
Back pitch up
Left roll left
Right roll right
Left stick on z extension
Forward is forward
Back is back
Right is right
Left is left
Z axis is up and down, double bound with hats should I prefer to use them
Yaw left is rudder left
Yaw right is rudder right
Toe break right doubles as strafe right
Toe break left doubles as strafe left
Another hat gives me up/down/left/right just in case I want to use my thumb to make small quick movements landing or jitter movements in combat.
All seems pretty logical, but hey...wtfdik 🤐

Even with M+K you do that in a shooter, the top players anyway.
@@j.d.4697 i dont think so xd they use strafing for quick peeking
Not a dry topic at all! Really glad you did this video and explained your thought process. I have just set up my dual stick so loving to see how successful pilots think through their controls
That's a cool video, thanks for that. May i suggest you to add or do a video about your in game settings, especially talking about ESP and joystick curves for players who want to understand what ESP is and how it's improve AIM. It would be awesome.
noted thank you for the input brother!
I this was a specific "duel stick" video, I will do a controls video as well
@@Avenger__One looking forward to that! I’m gonna be getting some sticks n pedals soon.
I intuitively came to the same control arrangement. I appreciate the in-depth rationale and justification shared here.
Man, I save and rewatch all your vids. Thank you for these super technical tips.
At first I thought the twist roll was weird but as I put my self in scenarios u are right. It is way more intuitive. For space anyways
The explanation of the left stick, and how you push the pip with strafe, is probably the biggest thing that I find myself trying to practice with now.
yup, i use this config too.
right stick is ONLY for "aiming"
left stick for moving the ship itself (up, down, left, right, roll)
i think i need some pedals too, for forwards / backwards.
typicall gamepad mapping, i guess thats where it comes from
Since I only have one joystick with throttle (Thrustmaster X HOTAS), I use the hat on the joystick for the strafe movements.
Own a glaive now :)
Thanks for sharing and all the videos.
7:10 i've set up my strafe and roll on keyboard with the curves advanced settings ingame, this gives me a more analogue-feeling digital input, that ramps up to 100% rather than instantly. Not comparable to joysticks, but much better than leaving it purely 0-100%
Where about are these settings? I can’t seem to find them?
@@fatsguitar333 were u able to find the settings
I'm using warthog too, i got roll and strafe on rudders, yaw on stick (the mindfuck lol) Upstrafe is on the left throttle handle, but i find it really difficult to get used to manipulating both throttles independent so most of the time i find myself just using throttle thumbstick for upstrafing which sukks :D i feel like our setup is not made for this XD
I really like the right throttle ministick for strafe tho, i might steal that lol
Anyone use a stick + mouse setup?
For now I have roll on Z axis right stick but might switch that to left stick as well.
my gosh perfect timing. I was just thinking of buying new sticks
Hey man it's what works for me but like I always say, you gotta find out what works best for you!!! And always have analog control over all 6DOF
I was totally surprised to hear you say your roll was left hand twist.. controller player here, so I can’t really talk, but what I have works for me.. at least I can feel good knowing that we both have pitch/yaw on the right stick, plenty of people tell me to have roll/pitch instead like an airplane
I wish you would have shown some video of you flying while demonstrating these things. Great explanations.
I will do better next time
Great explanation!
No room for pedals, sadly, so I need to use twin sticks for all six degrees of freedom. Right stick is pitch, yaw, roll, left is all the strafes.
Ohhhh so that's why my bro sent me his controls exactly duplicate like yours! We both have Thrustmaster so they're both the same. Now makes allot easier.
Thx for the video. A Video about settings/curves and key binding would be awesome too.
Find it interesting how you set up the pedals. Never would have thought to do that!
Awesome video! That’s not the first time I’ve heard the concept of using strafe to guide your aim. I get the concept, but when I try it in combat my ship never seems to want to strafe enough for me. I also fly the arrow.
That's all time in the seat too get the feel
Personally, my forward/backward is on the twist of my left joystick, while my roll is on the twist of my right joystick.
I don't have rudder pedals at the moment, else I would probably put then both on it.
Awesome vid Mate and appreciate the in depth explanation.
Man I'm glad I watched some of these hosas videos. Now I have a left stick setup coming from Virpil.
Well actually had to pause CitizenCon to watch that. Priorities in check
LOVE YOU brother!
I think the mouse bonus comes from muscle movement and fine motor control.
I have pedals but I haven’t used them yet. Should I lock the rotation on them? They are the ace virpil’s I believe.
Are you still playing? How are you finding dual sticks if you are?
Wow... At first I was thinking there was going to be no way I could put roll on the left stick but after your explanation I'm not so sure.
Great video as usual. This is why I subscribe
Did you get these pedals yet?
@@Schimml0rd I did and it took many days to get used to them. :D
Hey, I've got the X56 would you be able to show me / help with my keybind setup as I'm so lost with it
I just bought 2 Virpil Constellations and the Mongoose base. Should be coming by the end of May. It wasn't cheap
Thank you very much for this video, I really appreciate it.
I appreciate the effort here in making this video. Control and the theories about the human interface devices' application are a strong starting point for anyone trying to "git gud" many creators gloss over or completely ignore.
I don't know why but I could watch videos on flight mechanics and controls all day lol.
This is a video I've been hoping for!!! Thank you!
THANK YOU!
Thanks for another great video. I've got a couple of NXTs and love them. I use a similar setup to others that have posted in here wrt mappings.
Damn you though! Now I'm looking at rudders! :)
Cheers
My internal argument is "Be like Avenger!" vs "Be like plane". 😅 I'm sure he'd advise that time in seat is more important than any control scheme.
I will try it when i get my pedals. Tanks for vid.
I really want this but $437.36 US dollars is so much for one game. Thanks for the video explaining this so clearly.
its all good brother, this is what works for me, that doesn't mean its the only way to play
This are fantastic explanations. How does this change for atmospheric fights?
Roll into turns as much as you can
Watching this video for the first time now and realised, that I am using exaclty the same bindings on the same axis (sticks and pedals) for years now. The 1% is near baby, oh yeah! :D
This video is SO good. Literally changing to this and not changing until I get it right. Where exactly do you bind the match target speed to?
You said that when you push down on your left stick, you strafe UP and when you pull back you strafe DOWN right?
To me that seems counter intuative what the ship needs to do. Push DOWN for strafe down ie. down= go down and
pull up=strafe up?? guess we all have our preferences.
Nice vid A1. I like to play standing up so I don't see ever moving to Pedals. I use dual Constellation Alphas as well. Working on time on target and precision. Not quite at your level and seeing your setup I can see some reasons for that. Keep up the good work on these tutorials
thanks for this it's hard to get really get sticks at least for me that is
Only finding this video now... Have you tried HOSAM? Trying to figure out what I want, but find it hard to find videos comparing HOSAS to HOSAM
Very helpful thanks 👍
Got the same setup but got, my roll on my left stick x axis i just cant give it up, but probably be better for aiming but it's so fun to fly like this🤪
gotta do you brother!
Thank you
@Avenger__One: Do you think it's a big deal to reverse the left hand? To me it seems more natural that way and kinda like the right hand. Pulling the right hand raises the aiming reticule, but pulling the left hand lowers it?
Awesome bro, I also been preaching control as well! It would have been good to go over the reasons why you may have your curves or esp settings setup. Most of all joystick saturation 😉
Solid 9/10 video, will talk about sens I'm a new one
Interested in that too, especially for strafe stick/left stick where i think that, aside from landing situations, you would just want 100% thrust all the time, right?
Great video. I'm motivated to learn, thanks!😊
I have just gotten dual sticks yet do not have the pedals I am keen to try the left stick control as you mentioned yet forward and back are currently thrust and back strafe. Any suggestion for throttle appreciated 👍
Dual t16000ms
Super informative video, thx! Based on your suggestion I just got the VKB pedals and start training now :)
Over that I would really love to see how you mapped your Constellation Alpha Joysticks.
Trying it initially it's hard to find the feel at SCM level speeds, so I feel like it needs a curve,
If I do leave, before I do I’ll definitely promote your series. It deserves it by more than a country mile.
I keep using the mouse wheel for throttle control and it is definitely limiting me.
OK makes sense but what if you dont have pedals but just 2 sticks? what do i do then for going throttle forward and back?
Any recommendation on pedals? Been considering buying the most basic Virpil WarBRD Rudders for throttle but i see you can get more advanced ones with toe pedals as well but not sure if its that necessary?
I use VKB T-Rudder and I LOVE them!
