I love all the "Teachable" moments that are shown where THERE IS ACTUAL TEACHING being done to the crew/staff!
For those who don't know: Concrete does not dry, which would be water evaporating from the mix. Concrete cures. This is a chemical reaction very much like the way epoxy cures. If there isn't enough cement in the mix or too much water or not enough water or the temperature is too high or too low, the concrete will not cure. Then you get the crumbling mess we see at the beginning of this video. People that work with concrete should know this and take measures to ensure the concrete cures properly. One way this mess could happen is that the concrete was in the mixer too long and they added water so that they could still pour it. What they are supposed to do is dump the old concrete out and get a new batch. This kind of cost cutting could cause the entire structure to fail. It's not worth it.
Thank you for educating us. I found your input to be valuable
Interesting. There's a lot of things I don't know about. Thank you for the information. I knew concrete delivery is a timed event, but didn't know the specifics. Who makes the decision to discard a load of concrete? I am so curious to know what caused the delay here. Was it traffic? Was it the site manager? Were other trades running behind?
@@daniel_wilkinson Kinda like " Plaster of Paris " it also cures through chemical reaction
@@daniel_wilkinson Too bad I wasn't on the site, so I don't know why they did what they did. Adding too much water is only one possible cause. If they were pouring in winter and didn't bother to keep the concrete warm enough to cure, the result would be the same.
As for who makes the decision? that would usually be the site supervisor, but it depends on the way that contractor operates. If nobody has the authority to reject a delivery, there's a serious problem.
Well I wish I would've read your comment yesterday before I filled a hole in the side of my foundation. Couldn't read the water to mix ratio so I just winged it. While putting it up it was too wet and hard to work with.. got it done, but I expect I'll have another chance a year or two from now to redo it.. :(
Mike you are my hero ! Your work ethic blows my mind ! If all contractors would have a conscious homeowners would not go through problems like this one . I wonder how they sleep at night knowing their work will hurt many hard working homeowners . Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing such workmanship that is suppose to go into a home. I am always amazed at the effort and concern and the true carpentry skills you so love going into you work.
That house must be in Burlington. I know in mid 80s I drove ready mix truck, and when in Burlington, they wanted that concrete wet enough to find its own level when pouring the walls of houses.
In fact, my father drove ready mix truck for few years and he told us this, he went into an area where going in that morning he had maneuver around a moving truck that was at a house. he went and poured the footing and returned to plant for another load, and driving down the same street he had been on before, he drives past the place where the moving truck had been and it had sank 8 feet, the foundation gave out afteer the people had put there stuff in, They had unloaded the moving truck, went to get something to eat and came back and found that this had happened
When a government official says you are full of it, build their house that way and see how they like it. It is easy to ignore a problem when it isn't your problem. Shame on them.
I wonder if the neighbors had their foundations checked after seeing this!
Often wonder that when he fixes a home similar to others in the neighborhood. Especially when they're townhomes. Near certain the adjacent ones will have the same problems.
@@ronbennett7885 That is what I was thinking too.
How is it even possible that this happened, and the tests clearly showed that it was not good
and they are still not proven right and it is resolved under warranty for the homeowners,
it gives me goosebumps how houses were built without even an ounce of decency or interest
and this shows once again that the warranty is worthless and they really do everything
to avoid having to pay, why give a warranty if you can never rely on it anyway and you might as well
not have a warranty at all, they never reimburse anyway.
In commercial construction, clients don't rely on guarantees and warranties alone. Rather they insist on surety bonds and ongoing 3rd party inspections throughout the project.
Beautiful walls! Elegant lines.
Scrap the Ontario New Home Warranty Program, instead the builder must warranty their work for a period of 5 years. If the builder is unwilling to fix it, the law should state that the purchaser can, hire a 3rd party to fix it, then sue the builder for the repair costs.
Sounds like the testing company is in cahoots with the local contractors building the houses…
In the Northeast US, tens of thousands of homes have a similar problem. It was caused by pyrrhotite.
This is why I prefer CMUs and 3500 psi concrete grout for foundation work. The back flow preventor is really common in the States
Should have pressure treated wood as the sill on the cinder block.
The builder obviously either didnt get the tests done when the foundation was poured or ignored it. If this was discovered and acted on right after the pour was done it would of been a lot less effort and cost to fix.
This has negatively affected the value of the home as there basement now has a much smaller square footage.
never get a brand new house. heck did the government inspect the rest of the houses. they are usual done in batches nowadays so how many more have bad concrete
Pinky is adorable
The builder must’ve hired the same company that built Alcatraz to do thefoundation work
Interesting comparison. Highlights that substandard concrete work isn't a new thing.
Thats a real wet underground. Wou
The underlying issue is lack of criminal penalties for bad home builders and contractors. On the flipside, copying a movie is considered criminal. Shows how corrupt the system is. No one is really watching out for consumers in many jurisdictions.
One problem house out of the entire neighborhood?
What about the neighbours ? If the foundation fails on them wouldn't they drag the repaired house down with them?
Do like the no bullshit work and yes do it correct from the start
thankfully "Make it right" is not a copyright-
Everyone doing work, Take your Effin time annnnnnnnd " Make it right" not a puzzle- not a riddle- Do It Right The First Time ! If you have a manager on your back saying " get it done now and move on" RECORD THAT IN YOUR REMARKS and also DOCUMENT WHAT YOU DID !!!!! Get It Right ! :)
When you know, your toilet paper is higher quality.
How come youre electrical panels look like industial instalations from the 60s and bare wires visible
Bare wires are ground wires
thin wall pipe????
Watching these episodes it's obvious to me that the Bride and I seriously overbuilt our house.
No complaints.
I really wish Mike would out these bad contractors and inspectors by name.
Defamation laws
@@jabressdolath7657 If its not defamation, then you could also be morally if not legally responsible for the harrasment/death threats/etc that would certainly ensue.
What happens a lot with these kinds of contractors is they finish bunch of houses, "close" down the company, but re start it up immediately with a name change and with the owner now there wife or friend officially. Makes it impossible to actually keep track of whos actually running what company.
Too much risk and not the focus of the show. But even if he did, wouldn't change much, since builders operate under shell companies. They just close down and reopen under a new name. This practice isn't just limited to builders, but other types of businesses too, such as movers. There's far less consumer protections than many realize.
The inspector and the builder are definitely in the wrong line of work. Hope they get sued for all they are worth. Sounds like they should be criminally charged as well. That foundation could, collapse which will destroy the house and somebody could be hurt or worse killed.
Criminal penalties are rare. That's much of the problem right there. Builders seek to delay until the warranty expires. Many builders have little to no assets to go after. Often shell companies set up for each development. It's buyer beware and don't rely on guarantees nor the government to protect them.
Does pinning into an existing sub-standard footing make sense?
So obviously this houses concrete wasnt inspectioned before framing
Crooked bribed, inspectors,
or just afraid of losing their jobs and getting sued by the insurance companies and contractors.
Did Mike really say he wanted a Cheeseburger, Fries w/Gravy? C'mon U.S. we NEED Fries w/Gravy. (Fat kid in me NEEDING)
If wood is not supposed to contact cement, earth, gravel, whatever. Why is the piped in non-shrinkable grout allowed to make contact with the wood?
The evidence is right in front of you one plus 1 = 2 2 + 2 equals crap on this house!
I seen you eating pine nuts and gum did you ever see the man I think his name was Eual Gibbins he used to be on some commercial and used to say have you ever ate a pine tree then he would chew some thing he cut off under the bark well like your show whish I knew about it when I was driving a truck disabled now 66 years old I would come see you but don't have a ride keep doing what your doing can't wait to see the spud truck finished Jamie from the great state of Alabama
What about Meford Ontario Mike.
You left them high and dry!!
What happened there?
@@terencemerritt google meford ontario and mike holmes law suit.
@terencemerritt basically some holmes in Meford had to be demolished and some had extential repais. These were brand new holmes.
Mike didn't build the houses but promoted the builder. And was paid to promote the builder.
People bought these houses because Mike Holmes name was attached to the builder.
Mike claims that no one bought his home inspection on these houses.
He always bashes other builders and tells people to do due diligence and look up the contractors' references or anything you can find on them.
Yet here is a contractor that has closed because of the lawsuit on the houses.
People have lost their holmes or have had to pay out of pocket to rebuild them from the foundation up again, and Mike isn't doing a thing to help out. He is just letting the courts decide.
He is two-faced. Watch his shows he never does anywork he just bashes contractors.
He's an actor!
This is why you should NEVER use concrete as a foundation brick and wood is the best foundation out there PERIOD
And six mil poly is all you need on your roof. Also, there is not as much weight on the second level so save some money and frame it with cardboard.
Surely the homeowner won't pay for this? The way you americans sue each other, I would think that the homeowner will sue the builder or whoever said it was correct...The u.k have building inspectors also a national house building council who guarantee new homes builds for 10 years you can pay for extended warranty...
This programme is Canadian, not American.
@tonygroves5526 Yeah, so what canada is no different than america they still sue just like america
Pinky is sooooooooo damn cute❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤wud love to meet her one day
