I'm so happy that many of you became interested in Japanese patterns after watching my video! I just updated the description with some links to Japanese knitting books, kits and my tutorial. Please check them out! Thank you for watching!
This is the first time I've seen your podcast, it's amazing. I squealed with joy at the projects in the intro and the full episode absolutely lived up to expectations! Everything was so pretty and nicely explained. Thank you so much!!!
Please, continue podcasting, you provide an interesting window into a knitting kaleidoscope world. Also, probably it is a wise decision not to thrust yourself into a designing business, but keep it up occasionally for the fun of it and to keep you present and gather experience. The most interesting designers (imho) are those who design things that they want to knit and wear and don't find exactly that already on the market - and not those that need to feed the market because they need to make living in this business. Knitting business is a tough one, and it has many dark and dirty sides if you want to profit from it, not much differently as many many many completely different business fields. Knitting community, on the other hand, is lovely, a sisterhood that connects people even if otherwise do not have much in common.
I really enjoyed your video - I also have dumbbells so I now know how to block my work!❤ Your explanations are so clear and I love your patterns and yarns. Japanese designs are so beautiful in embroidery as well as knitting as you are showing us. Thank you thank you for such an interesting afternoons viewing. 👏🇬🇧
Thank you for a great podcast, I find you very interesting and so talented. Your slipover is gorgeous and I really like the low contrast colours you have used. I also like how you show that you don’t always have to spend a lot of money to enjoy your hobby. Using your dumbbells when blocking is a good idea especially when just starting out knitting. I love your honesty when you talk about your future and needing a reliable steady income. Good luck in everything and hope to see you soon. You inspire me a lot x
Haha, when you said you enjoy podcasters with similar backgrounds I realised that's why I watch so many knitters who are also engineers! Good luck with your job search :)
I'm a beginner knitter but I was also the person who bought a Japanese pattern book on etsy years ago before learning the language or how to knit! I'd been watching so many knitting podcasts since I started learning a few months ago but you're the first who I feel really shares my knitting aesthetic and is also Chinese! I must admit I also feel more culturally connected to Chinese content creators despite being abc and basically illiterate.. I'm so happy to have found your channel! It feels like it'll take me years to get to steeking but thank you for sharing your knits and your story. ❤
Glad for you having made choices and changes to enhance your enjoyment and joy of your hobby/passion. So good to see you back in this episode and can't wait for more about your future adventures. You are a talented , wise, and lovely fellow-knitter! Wishing you the best in your job pursuit (one that leaves lots of time for knitting and the making you love).

I was so happy that this podcast showed on my TH-cam feed. More and more I watch other than just North American Anglo podcasters. I am South Asian and love to watch a podcast for the different cultures and food and see what I can learn and also identify with. I think the time will come soon when your patterns will be wanted, It takes a while and there is a reason why some designers get all the hype (and not necessarily because they have great patterns). Hang in there, pull back a little from trying to design and sell but keep making your podcasts. There are many of us who are looking for more cultural diverse podcasts. Thank you!! Happy Birthday!
Hello I just found your podcast it’s absolutely wonderful I love the vest you are wearing You have beautiful taste I hope your design and engineering merge and explore Will have to go back and watch old episodes thanks
Hello Athena 👋 greetings from Ireland, I just discovered you on youtube today, your projects are so creative, the colourwork is amazing, the wall garden sweater is just fabulous, thank you for sharing your projects with us.
I am so happy that I found your podcast today. You make so beautiful knitwear, and what a bright idea with the ballon. I have never been in China or Japan, but my edlest daughter has stuided in Tokyo and speaks Japanese, and my best friend was married to Aki from Japan. I did not know about the yarn with colours from van Gogh’s art. I will knit a pair of socks in «night cafe…» for sure. Thank you for sharing parts of your personal and knitting life. Greetings from Norway.❤
I completely understand what you mean by looking for podcasters with a similar background to you -- that's partly why I enjoy your podcast so much! Good luck with the job search 🤞 I also live in Vancouver and work in the tech space, if you ever need some pointers, let me know!
Hi! First time watcher. I adore Japanese patterns. I have a couple of the Japanese cable pattern books and some crochet patterns too. I am glad I found your podcast.
Great work as usual! Also, good luck with the engineering job search, we all need stable income to support our passion, so it is a great decision to keep this as a fun hobby. Happy knitting!
I’ve ordered from Wet Coast Yarns. Wonderful store!! You’re amazing. Living should be as stressLESS as possible. Good for you for making those decisions! I’m sure you won’t have trouble finding a suitable posit somewhere! All the best!
Very happy to see a new video from you! Love your content. I'm learning Japanese at the moment, so it's really interesting to learn about Japanese patterns.
I love your slipover, and I love knitting from charts. I am currently knitting 2 sweaters by Hirose Midori. I am so happy to run across your podcast. Thank you very much.
Hi! I totally enjoyed your whole clip! As I’m an engineer and statistician, from the start I found your presentation style very familiar! I studied in America. ;) I’m a self-taught knitter and youtube is my best teacher. I like this material as a flexible medium to realize my ideas freely. I’m now back in Korea but my daughter is studying in Toronto, so I’m also searching for a way to move to Canada. I love knitters - they are my kind of people (mostly introvert nerds hehe). Thanks for sharing your works and thoughts! Looking forward to another video! Cheers!
Thank you for the knitting podcast recommendations ! I love your garden wall pullover ! It's a shame that it's not easily available to the worldwide knitting community 🥲 But at least, I get to see your beautiful version ! See u in the next video 🥰
such a wonderful podcast episode!!! finished knitting a sock to this :) you have such an inspiring and joyful spirit and I'm so excited to see more of your podcasts, thank you for the recommendations for Japanese patterns (your vest is gorgeous! i might make one for myself, you've inspired me to get over my fear of steaking!) and of Chinese knitting podcasters, i only know Czech and English podcasters so far. have a great day/night!
This was a really fun watch! Steeking scares the hell out of me, I'm not trying that anytime soon ... :'D One thing I love about knitting and yarn art is that you can take it as slow or as fast as you want, and I completely understand your reasoning for not wanting to pursue a career in knitting which would make you feel obligated to try branch out into things that might not fuel your passion. I love your voice and perspective on knitting outside of the English speaking world. I'm quite a slow knitter myself and I buy yarn first and then choose a pattern, so I haven't yet purchased one of yours but I'm very likely to when I'm making my 2024 knitting plans! Your vine collection is beautiful and the pine and fir sweater is such an interesting pattern, I just haven't found the right yarn match yet.
@@jamiethrogmorton2540 I mean. You're probably right. But for now I'm of the firm opinion that knitting and sowing are two separate things and they should remain that way. 😂
I find so much inspiration in your show. You’re such a talented knitter! I love the designs that you knit, and your colors and I also don’t like super wash!!! 😝😝🤣🤣
I loved your episode and thank you for the recommendations! I’m a speaker of Chinese but I don’t know any Chinese language podcasts, would you mind recommending some? Thank you!
Yes! Chinese podcasts are on Bilibili (a Chinese video platform because TH-cam is blocked in China). You can find my pod on Bilibili from the link in the description, and also search for 编织播客. Some podcasters there are jenney_zee, 绪绪叨叨的毛线记录,小李的编织播客,辣媛,绒绒. And more Chinese knitters are joining the trend!
I too just found your podcast and am very impressed. I have a Facebook group for those who love Japanese stitch patterns and designers. If you are interested I’d love to have someone with your knowledge in the group.
As you might know, Japanese knitting patterns are quite popular here in Korea! I’ve bought the popular Keiotodama magazines but haven’t tried the patterns yet. Would love to learn and try out as well as steeking! You are so talented 😊 I love your podcasts dear. When you are back with pattern making, I’ll be waiting for the vine bralette! All the best ❤
Didn’t know that Afghan crochet = Tunisian crochet! It’s also same in Korean. Just purchased your Pine and Fir sweater pattern, hopefully to cast on soon and support you 💕 That knitting cord is also available at cheaper price now in Korea and it’s the same thing and much cheaper as a fishing item I heard? 😉 just a tip!
Your items are so beautiful, I'm glad your video came up on my feed! And the ShiKe yarn is gorgeous. I've heard on another podcast that the way to get the camera to focus on something you are showing is to cover your eyes.
Lovely video, your makes are stunning! I love Japanese patterns too . . You made me laugh saying engineering thingy, my husband is a mechanical engineer, if anyone asks what he does in future I will say “ an engineering thingy “ 😂 Bridget
Ahh so many lovely colorwork projects in one episode!! I adore the colors in the Ophelia slipover. It's so subtle but so cute! Your wall garden sweater is so beautiful -that's great that you took the time to fix something that bothers you! I actually just got the kit for that sweater recently while I was in Japan and I am so excited to knit it up! I've never knit a Japanese pattern though, so I'll have to see how that goes haha. And next time I go back to Harbin I will have to ask for your yarn store recommendations!! That's so interesting that you mention that sweater from your grandma - my mom recently gave me a sweater that had a same backstory! I think in that case they had purchased the yarn, and they brought it to the people who knitted it up. In this case though I think the sweater looked machine knit and hand finished! Or at least the yarn looked so thin, I couldn't fathom someone knitting it by hand haha
Ohh so happy to hear you got the Wall Garden Kit!! Let me know if you need help using the pattern. It’s sooo beautiful! There aren’t many local yarn shop left in China. I didn’t even go to one this time I went back to Harbin. Everything is online. I can point you to some online shops next time you go there tho!
@@SeedlingStitch Oh thank you so much, I really appreciate the offer and will definitely let you know! Ah ok, that totally makes sense. I'll have to ask you about online shops next time I'm getting ready for a trip back!! Thank you!
I really like the way you share and love all the patterns you have made, they are absolutely beautiful. I love Japanese designs too, and it's great to hear you share and connect with people about this, I'm in Vietnam very near to China, can you share and give me the link to buy yarn in China? I see you said they sell 10g or 20g of yarn which is very suitable for knitting in colorwork. But where I live, they always sell 50g or more. Sometimes, the pattern that only use a few grams, so buying too much is a waste and it is also difficult to combine with other patterns unless there are many yarn colors. Thanks so much! Love
Thank you! The store only sold the yarn in small amount for the Ophelia Slipover as a whole kit, but not individually, and they don’t even sell the kit anymore 🙁. I don’t have links for Chinese yarn shopping because those orders are place on a Chinese online sale App called Taobao and is impossible to use for those who don’t read Chinese. They only ship within China as well. If you do have connection in China, you can ask them to buy these yarn for you.
I am very glad you said "pause designing" instead of "I'm not going to design any more." If you have ideas for patterns in your head, they are going nag you like a spoilt child until they get out into the world. If you decide not to publish them right away, perhaps you could keep a journal of your ideas so you don't lose them - or worse, see a pattern release that is the same as the design you were planning. As far as testers, there a few testers groups on Ravelry with very experienced (and beginners) knitters & crocheters who give excellent feedback and help. The only jumper (sweater pullover) pattern that I have ever knit more than 1 time is the *Hepburn Pullover* by Jennifer Wood, but I am knitting second *Nouchali* by SusannaIC. They are both so concisely written and fit so perfectly that I want to fill my wardrobe with them. Finally, Aoibhe Ni has some really helpful Tunisian Crochet tutorials (Ava Ni on TH-cam) for people who might be unfamiliar with this amazing technique, or who are ready to dive into it but don't know where to start.
Thanks for your input! I feel I’m overwhelmed by the amount of work that comes with writing and publishing patterns at the moment, but I do enjoy just simply designing something to wear myself. I’ve been thinking about just writing a pattern for my own size without grading and sell at a low price, or even just publish my notes as a free recipe. Then without the “entrepreneur” part of an actual “knitting business”, I can still contribute my passion in design to the community…
I enjoyed the podcast! I like to watch visual podcasts, and when I put one on knitting, it gets me motivated to pick up my WIPs! :) The walled garden pullover is beautiful, I will put it in my ravelry Queue. Edit: Looks like the patterns are only available together with the kit. Too bad, I might have to make my own intarsia pattern. A similar pattern for a townscape is included in the keitodama 188 isssue, maybe I will have more luck finding this issue.
I just found your channel! I love all your knits and your thoughtful explanations. Would you be able to provide links for patterns and stores (even if they aren’t English). I love the idea of ordering kits with no waste! I think there are many good translation apps these days. I also love Japanese patterns but have never tried to knit one. Maybe now is the time. So glad I found you! ❤
i think your knitted items are beautifully knitted and the colours are amazing. I"m really interested in the sheep hat, could you tell me where i could get the pattern and the yarn you used. thanks and once again your knitting is beautiful
Hello there, I've just discovered your channel and I am impressed by your projects and also the video quality. What's your new camera, please? Thank you
I just discovered you and I’m very happy about it because I love Japanese knitwear designs more than most others. Unfortunately though, I find them very difficult to get hold of. Do you have any tips on how to get them? I live in the UK. Also, are they always gonna be too small seeings as I am an average European size?
Hi, thanks! The Etsy shop I put I the description ships worldwide. The Japanese patterns are mostly one size, but you can adjust by changing gauge. And the author Michiyo has a series of 4-size knitting books that offer larger sizes.
The ribbon yarn is best kept until you have a project that is better with ribbon yarn than it is with other yarn. Patterns with drawn out stitches for example.
Where can I find the pattern for the Dufy sweater? It’s so pretty, but navigating the Japanese sites is a bit confusing…😅 I only found a page that sold knitting kits, but they were sold out…
Hmm you are right that the official Dufy pattern is only available with the kit and is sold out. I got mine from a questionable source that I’d rather not promote…😅
You can find the official kit for it at the Daruma Store Japan website. I have to admit that I got the pattern from a questionable source that I’d rather not promote…
Thank you and good on you for your ethical stance on pattern distribution. Is it possible for you to give a possible yarn substitution for the Cinese yarns as we can’t get them?
Thanks for understanding! As for Chinese yarns, they are really comparable to western yarns in similar components. For example, Sandnes Garn Tynn Line is similar to some summer yarns I showed in the video. And the Chinese silk mohair is very similar to silk mohair from KFO and Sandnes. I’d suggest ask your local yarn store to recommend yarns with a weight and component that you are looking for. They must have better knowledge in substitution!

Thank you!
❤😊🎉 спасибо!! Это круто, очень красиво, всех благ🎉
I clicked so fast! Wow, you were a busy shopper indeed. I can’t believe the price of those barber cords 😂
Right?!
Thanks! Look for pomadour24 on Etsy. She sells Japanese knitting books!
@@SeedlingStitch thank you!!
I always use balloons to block my hats. I like to draw a face on it!😂
Lol yes! I was about to put googly eyes on the balloon!👀
@@SeedlingStitch that is a great ideA!
I love your vest and wish I could make it. Maybe one day the pattern will be translated in English!
I hope so too! Or you may try to learn reading Japanese charts from my channel 😉
@@SeedlingStitch oh, wow! I will have to check them out.I just learned about your channel and have a Japanese Bible stitch book!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

i think your knitted items are beautifully knitted and the colours are amazing. I"m really interested in the sheep hat, could you tell me where i could get the pattern and the yarn you used. thanks and once again your knitting is beautiful
It’s Baa Ble Hat on Ravelry. The yarn is British Eroika and Soft Donegal Tweed, but I suppose you can substitute with other Aran weight woollen yarns.
That’s to bad the vest sweater is only available in Japanese. It’s very pretty and I would love to knit one.
Добрый день,какая вы молодец Я бы тоже хотела связать такой свитер.
Hello there, I've just discovered your channel and I am impressed by your projects and also the video quality. What's your new camera, please? Thank you
It’s FujiFilm XT200. Thanks!
@@SeedlingStitch Thank you!
I love your style!!!! Just subscribed :) Also where is the wall garden pullover by Tokai from? I can’t find the pattern online.
Hey I just added the link to the description!
That’s such a good idea! I haven’t tried draw out stitch yet. I’ll be looking out for patterns with those!
If your beanie hat isn’t quite big enough, crochet a border. Next time knit more rounds to make the hat deeper.
I ended up picking up stitches and knit some 10 more rounds. It’s perfect now!
That dufy jumper has beautiful cables, do you know if the pattern is still available anywhere? I couldn't find it on the daruma website
Thank you. The pattern is not available separately from the kit unfortunately.
@@SeedlingStitch I figured, I'll just have to watch the next episode to appreciate how yours turned out :)
Hi Athena,
Could you write the brand name of the Chinese needles you bought, please. I would really like to try them out 😙
It’s 三燕 / San Yan or literally translated to Three Swallows. Maybe search for 三燕环形针 (=San Yan circular needles). Good luck!
It doesn’t look like the puppyarn website has the Wall Garden Pullover anymore. Is there a book I can order that has the pattern in it?
It’s a limited edition kit from 2023. It’s discontinued now :(
Where can I find the pattern for the Dufy sweater? It’s so pretty, but navigating the Japanese sites is a bit confusing…😅 I only found a page that sold knitting kits, but they were sold out…
Hmm you are right that the official Dufy pattern is only available with the kit and is sold out. I got mine from a questionable source that I’d rather not promote…😅
What a pity! I‘ll have to figure the pattern out on my own 🙈
@Stephanie-oy6od I’ll share about the construction in my next episode. Hopefully it will help you figure out the pattern!
@@SeedlingStitch Great! I‘ll keep my eyes peeled for the next episode! :-)
Do you have info to get the pattern for the balaclava?
I love Japanese designs but cannot find any patterns in the US.
Some books can be found on Etsy, but yeah unfortunately not many of them were translated to English.
@@SeedlingStitch I havent even found ones in Japanese. If they use the universal chart, I would be able to knit from a Japanese book
@@SeedlingStitch LOL, I found several on Etsy that look wonderful. I laugh because now all of the commercials on TH-cam are in Japanese!
How do we find the pattern? Even a Japanese chart is good.
Please look at my “5 tips for reading Japanese patterns” video. I’ve provided many useful links and tips in that one!
Why don’t you keep for a dolly. It is pretty. Then no forging or wasted time. 45:29
Oh that would be a good idea! But I’ve already given the project & yarn away. She’s continuing on it so still not waste I guess!☺️
