Hi, I’m Athena or 小禾/Xiaohe, which literally translates to “seedling” in Chinese. Here I chat about my knitting & crochet & sewing projects, often from Japanese patterns or my own designs/modifications. I work part time during the weekends at my local yarn store, Wet Coast Wools, located in Vancouver, Canada. Hope you enjoy my contents!
Knitting for End of Summer - Seedling Stitch Knitting Podcast 2024.10
**October 2024 - Seedling Stitch Knitting Podcast**
It's been two months! I'm back with more knitting projects and new designs: a loungewear set, a lace scarf, cute colourwork socks and a fair isle vest inspired by TV show. There're also crochet and sewing projects: I made a hip scarf for belly dancing (I totally mis-said it as "hip dancing" in the video so sorry for that!). Also I've sewn two pairs of pants that I'm very proud of. Hope you enjoy this episode!
Happy knitting,
💚 Athena

Keep making these videos please I’m watching. I even ordered the Keitodama magazine because of you. ❤❤❤
Thanks so much, I’m glad I could inspire you!
Yay! I have begun to collect patterns not on ravelry
Hello! Where can you buy the full set of fair isle vest? I imagine there must be someone selling the exact amount of yarn in a bundle since there are many many colors 😂
I bought a kit on the Chinese Taobao app, although it wasn’t the exact amount. Each color was given at least one ball so there was quite a lot of leftovers still!
Ich würde immer die Maschen sichern 😅
I’m gonna puke, this is so triggering 😅
This is gorgeous! I'm not seeing it in her ravlery 😓
No, the pattern was only available physically in a limited edition kit... It’s not sold anymore :(
Beautiful I love cats and dogs too.
Thank you so much for your videos! I really like vintage japanese designs and your videos inspired me to give it a try. Now I’m finally knitting my first blouse. Yay! 🎉❤
I’m so glad! Good luck!
Thank you so much!! Thanks for the file too!!
Thanks so much for your tips! Really helpful ❤
You did an amazing job and you looked beautiful for your wedding. Wishing you both a long and happy life together. Also, you're grandmother has a beautiful spirit. Wishing all the best for her too.🥰🙏
Thank you so much ❤
Congratulations on the book! Love the grandmother shawls.
Thank you!
Athena I bought your vine top I am novice when it comes to reading patterns. I learned how to need by looking the finished garment by a. Romanian lady that can not speak English and little French😵💫. I read your pattern .in the beginning it said cast on 17 st then I’m not sure whether is it slip 3 then knit. 11(chart) that will end up 17 sets. Please help.
On the row after cast on, slip 3, work 11 sts from chart, slip 3. If you’ve never used written patterns with charts before, I wouldn’t recommend starting with my vine top. It is a bit advanced. Maybe start with some simpler pattern and build your way up there.
Lo sto facendo ma sbaglio i ferri accorciati
um did you reinforce the steeks?
I didn’t have to. I left 7 stitches on each side. The unraveling wouldn’t go past two stitches.
@@SeedlingStitch the magic of steeking never ceases to amaze me
You are just Amazing. Such inspiration for all knitters Not to mention how generous you are . Not in my good conceint to down;oand your pattern for free. It took you so much time to design. Specially Canadien Dollars is so much less.I hope I 'll get around to knit your sweater. I'll use cotton instead of Donegal wool It will be too warm for I live. Thanks Athena. I enjoy so much with all your podcast. I'm still trying to reach for the cream color around Lacy yoke sweater I believe it is a scan avian designer.
Thanks for your support!
Where do you buy your Japanese knitting book . It is because you read and write Chinese makes it easier for you to read Japanese knitting.
Most books I own are Chinese translations of Japanese books. Some authentic Japanese ones I got from Etsy. I studied Japanese for two years and was able to read, and the resemblance in characters between the two languages do make it easier for me.
I just can’t believe the depth of your ability to knit so complicated color work. I’ve knitting all my life but never have the nerve to try my extend of my intarsia was the eye of an owl which end up the eye pop up would’ve stay flat that’s it. Never try again,
You owl reminded me of a Racoon😊
Hi Athena for the neck before you knit the pivot did you knit a few stocking knit before you did the picot? Please make some tutorial of cast. Since you have so much experience, thanks
I don’t remember what I did exactly. I think I wrote some note on my Ravelry page of this project. You can check it out!
Gu ess w hat I jus t bought th e pattern I preferred your s the picot edge thanks for sharing I also want to know the lace. Y yoke I believe it is. A Scandinavian D esigner😊
Athena one of your podcast you knit a lacey yoke sweater you mentioned the name of the designer and name of the sweater please tell . Thanksr
It might be the blue one, Provence Top by Ekaterina Vorobeva.
Thank you for the video, what numbers of threads of this brand Scheepjes Stonewach did you use? 816 or 834, 821 or 831
Hi, I used the exact same colours as the book suggested, don’t remember the number though.
Athena when will you write up the lace pattern?
I’ve already posted the lace stitch pattern on my Ravelry project page. As for the pattern for the whole top, it’ll take longer time.
What I love about the tunic is the Lacey pattern and the over size look, thanks I’ll check out Rebecca😊🌺
where did you find this pattern? 😭😭
In Sandnes’s book MYKT bought at my local yarn shop.
@@SeedlingStitch oh okay, thank you!!
I guess you must have inherited your grandma gift of knitting👏
Hi , I love your top , do you have a pattern tutorial’s by Is there a way to make the neck all the way up to the neck,
I haven’t written this pattern out yet. There’s the Tolsta Tee pattern by Rebecca, which is a generic raglan T shirt in a similar shape.
Yes ay0!!! Congratulations on your degree!!! Great job😊
You speak English very quickly, so no need to speed up the video. Plus you make so few errors, I rarely notice. I’m so envious that you are bilingual ❤
Thank you! I’ve gradually become less self conscious about my English and focus more on what I want to share about!
@@SeedlingStitch I believe now you can completely let go of ANY concerns and just speak ❤️
I LOVE THAT HAT. Evergreens are dear to my heart too and I'm currently working on a pair of socks with a pine cone pattern, though they're grey because it's the only colour I had in that weight. I'm very impressed with your construction skills!
Thank you!
Those mittens are gorgeous! Where can I find the pattern for them?
Thanks! I’ve published them on Ravelry and my KoFi shop for free as “Vintage Shanghai Mittens”!
@@SeedlingStitch oh wow, amazing, thanks for sharing!
For knitting two socks at a time, you can find the inner end of the skein and use that for one sock while knitting the other sock with the outer end. The inner end is usually a little bit bunched up and you will need to unravel that a bit, but you won't need to wind the skein into 2 separate balls. On washing: air out your garment between uses instead of washing. Wool freshens up well. Brushing and hand washing are generally recommended for wool garments, although I machine wash mine to save time and dry them flat. Laundry bags can apparently cause felting because of the friction. I haven't had that happen, but it's something to keep in mind. I don't know how frequently I wash my wool socks, but I mostly wear thick ones (Aran weight) and they don't smell even when they look grimy from all the dog hair in my home. (Sorry if this is old information to you by now! I just didn't see anyone commenting on those topics here yet)
Thanks for the tips!
The fairisle is so beautiful. I love James Herriot stories. I used to read them to my kids.
The fairisle is so beautiful. I love James Herriot stories. I used to read them to my kids.
Just came actoss uour video. You are delightful, and your knitting choices are very nice.
Oh thank you!
Loving your delightful energy so much, and all of your projects look beautiful. Congrats on deciding to write a pattern book and I am wishing you sucess with that!
Thank you ❤
That's funny, I just recently made a pair of socks from a yarn very similar to the one in your Sunday Socks. I love the effect it creates. Good job repurposing yarn!
Hi Athena! I'm new to your channel and watching these older videos. You inspire and impress me so! I love that you're using up leftover yarn and thinking about projects creatively and with a sense of humour. I learned to knit in the Finnish variation of the Continental style. It's a lot like the Norwegian one, except the yarn stays in front of the needle while purling. (Honestly, I don't really know how to describe it in words, because as an advanced beginner myself, all I can say Norwegian purling looks different from the Finnish one). Enough rambling, I really just wanted to say I'm glad to have found your channel. And THANK YOU for the ergonomics pointers. All the best to you! ❤
Welcome! I’m glad you like my chitty chat!
so so so sweet podcast:) loved your dance:) You are very talented, socks looks unreal, like art peace.
Thank you ❤
If you buy yourself some pinking shears to finish the edges in your sewing, they do a good job on all fabric but especially lighter ones and as a bonus are good for grading curves too instead of clipping them, and are low cost.
I didn’t know that. Thanks for the tip!
Wow, qiviut! I’ve always wanted to try it. How does the blend you got compare to cashmere?
I think it feels fuzzier, softer to skin and more airy than cashmere.
Wow another great podcast really enjoyed watching ❤❤❤
So glad!
I'm a new subscriber and I love your knitting projects! They are so creative and I love how you use colors. Bampf also looks incredible, I really want to visit now.
Welcome!!
I use left over fabric for all sorts of things depending on the fiber; underwear, patches to repair other garments (think of Sashiko), patchwork clothing (quilted look), interior pockets on another garment, interfacing (makes areas stiffer to provide structure to the garment), I make bias tape to use to finish raw edges, scrunchies...
I saved them too! One day I’ll find an appropriate use for them!
I hope you add your hat pattern to your book.
I didn’t feel the hat is original enough to add to my book, but can add it on the list of self published patterns!
I always wondered why white people were in Asian magazines. I dont like it. I think they should use Asian models :(
congrats on the book deal - what an achievement!
Thank you!
You are such an inspiring person. I love hearing about all of your adventures and things you do (your trips, the knitting book you’re writing, the fact that you are taking belly dancing classes, etc.). Your podcasts are so nice to watch and always leave me feeling happy. ❤
Oh I’m so happy to hear that! Thank you!
You have really nice taste. That two piece looks great on you.❤
Oh thank you!
