@Benjamin Russell its different for every daw, but in Reaper you create a new track. then in the track view left click and hold the track you want to send to the bus. If you drag it directly under the new track, you should see a blue bar between the two. if you drag it a little more the bar gets smaller. let go of the track and it should be indented under the new track. the new track is now a bus.
Props, my friend. I don't know if you figured this out yourself, or got it somewhere else, but it's very simple, and a very elegant solution to adding some spice to a recording, minus a keyboard controller. Like you, I'm a guitar player, not a keyboardist, and this is just very appealing - albeit somewhat limited - because of it's simplicity, and clever use of just a plain old DAW. Thank you for posting this - you've got my brain sparking all over the place with new ideas, both with guitar-to-midi, and musically. Subbed, and you deserve it.
Only drawbacks is no polyphony and no velocity control. You have to go in and tweak the velocities after the fact and do three passes of recordings to get 3 notes on 3 separate tracks then do some kind of MIDI merge or copy/paste to get them into one MIDI clip. And fix any weird MIDI data it didn't do correctly. This might be useful in some limited way like some full-on bass guitar sample or synth solo.
+TruthSurge Or in combination with MiGiC or Jam Origin's software Guitar-to-midi. Not sure about MiGiC, but Jam Origin's new Version 2 (getting very quick!) can be used in stand-alone mode or as a vst in a DAW. Interesting possibilities... I'm glad people are getting serious about this - it opens up so many musical possibilities. I've been dreaming about this for a long time (can't afford a MIDI guitar. But really, in retrospect, this is very obvious - like most ideas, after someone does them. It's a very clever solution with a conventional software DAW. I've been messing with this stuff for years, and would have never thought of this.
The only software used in this is Reaper and the stock plugin reatune. The guitar is just hooked up using an audio interface and a 1/4" instrument cable
Nice video. Took me about 10 min to get my guitar triggering an electric piano VST. Two things I wish this function could do: one, trigger polyphonically (for chords); two, record the notes as MIDI notes in a piano roll for further editing.
www.jamorigin.com/ works with any DAW as well as stand alone app. much lower latency than what is in this video. however, this video contains a pretty cool trick
@Aspiired umm its one i downloaded from the stash and then tweaked it for editing. I use a different theme for mixing. i can probably email you the theme file if you want
How come I don't get the Edirol showing all the instruments. I only have this other box that shows up. Or could you do a tutorial of how to load Edirol?
I know the title of the video says use the guitar as a controller, and that seems to work okay. But, with no actual track being recorded will it become part of the mix just by hearing it through monitoring? And, if that is the case, you could also use audio tracks as source for the midi channel, it doesn't have to be live.
nice…I have been using logic on a fast mac for the past couple of years…would like to know how to integrate your methodology into that platform…just too cheap to fork out the funds for an off the shelf guitar controller I guess…anyway really appreciate your genius.
I think "jam origin" is doing same job as reatune, converting auido signal into midi for daws working on mac..I havent tried it, but I am looking for same solution... especially for Logic and Mainstage..
i couldn't get ReaTune to recognise guitar signal. need help. in this video reatune automatically gets the signal but when i added the reatune to channel fx didnt work. only dry signal. even that graphical tuning indicators didnt triggered. is that an input output problem ?
My poor gt10 has a midi converter and I have the cable, but never plugged to the computer yet. I wouldnt know what to install to play with VST, what program, where to get the VST
I want to be able to sing a note into a microphone and have an instrument sound come out of my PA. Can this program do it with voice? If not, do you know one that does?
Would this work for drums? Meaning, is it possible to run this setup and use a Vst drum kit as the instrument? if so, how do you map the notes in midi?
I've tried this, and although ReaTune detects my guitar signal, I can't get any signal on Track 2. I did exactly as you demonstrated, but it won't work. I assume there is some problem with sending/recieving the midi data. Have you ever experienced this? Thanks, this is a really smart solution for those who dont have a midi controller.
hmm in not really sure. it had been a long time since I have done this, but I would assume it is something simple. Maybe try using one track first. if it works then send it to a separate track.
but I think there a problem. There is no way you can save the sound. if I record a complete lets say, piano solo, it is still a recorded guitar, i cannot save it =(
Jam Origin Midi Guitar VST plugin is a lot better. No latency, polyphone detection so you can easily play and record chords and much more... Just download from they site and try;)
is Jam Origin vst plugin exactly the same features like the Stand alone? I ask because they wont let you demo the vst plugin only the stand alone. Sounds like they dont want us to know something.
I suspect it could. Instead of using the tuner to control hardware i suspect youd have better though ultra limited control by using the gate he was using in the video and below the fader and clicking the "send midi to X". Then in that way, you could send a midi note only when you play over the gates threshold.
You should be able to copy the reatune vst into the vst folder flstudio reads from. Manipulate mixer tracks similar to how cutthrough sets up his tracks in reaper. Going to test this out later.
Hi! I've already learned the technique through this and other videos, but I'm having difficulty with one thing. I want to record a midi track while playing the guitar, but I still can not. What I can do is make the guitar track be recorded, only it and, when it is played, sends the signal to the other track and so the virtual instrument is heard. But what if I can directly record a midi track from this technique there? What is left to do? Thanks! Nice video!
Tony D Yeah, but that's really bad. You can't actually make music like that. CutThroughRecordings If it is in fact your PC and not your driver, you need to upgrade. You could get a new one or you could ask someone who knows about computers. You could maybe get a new and better sound card or upgrade the RAM. I don't really know what to do but there are solutions. Just ask someone. I'm lucky enough that the guy who sells me electronics happens to be a producer as well. Find someone like that. Good luck to you.
Paul TheSkeptic Oh it's definitely pretty bad haha! Just pointing out that he did mention the latency, maybe he was just using that computer for the demo?
Nice discovery and usage of a "hidden feature" within the standard tool-set! However, I don't think this setup will track anything but pitch; no dynamics or other expression-data like vibrato, and certainly no chords. For basic tracking when inspiration hits, its functional. I haven't found a better way to to this which is free. Personally I have good experience with the the Sonuus G2M, which is a litte box that splits your guitar signal into normal audio and MIDI. It's fast and it tracks volume and vibrato as well - but only monophonic. It certainly can be used with a microphone as well! Suitable for violin, flute etc. too. There are software solutions popping up that claims to do it all (with chords), like this app for iOS: www.cultofmac.com/258742/app-turns-your-real-guitar-into-garageband-midi-controller/ Not sure if it delivers, though. On a last note(!), note(!!) that several so called soft synths (VSTi) actually have an audio input. NI's Absynth is just one example. Here you can play fat swirly synth pads directly from your guitar quite easily.
+CutThroughRecordings Hi, where can i get a copy of reatune as i am not using Reaper. Would you be able to email me the dll file or link to download? Thanks.
Thank you! I didnt think this was possible without spending alot of money on a midi guitar or something ! I'm very excited to try this!

Some folk want it all lol

I hadn't thought about using ReaGate as an input filter, thanks for sharing!
Wish somebody made a driver that turns your guitar signal into midi signal by default. The intensity of the signal also matters.
www.jamorigin.com/ works with any DAW as well as stand alone app. much lower latency than what is in this video. however, this video contains a pretty cool trick
You can't play more then one note or chords for that matter. Any way for that?
Thanks I’ve been trying to figure out how to use my electric cello as a midi controller thank you for showing me how
@Aspiired umm its one i downloaded from the stash and then tweaked it for editing. I use a different theme for mixing. i can probably email you the theme file if you want
Interesting approach and w/o the addition of an midi controller on the guitar.
How come I don't get the Edirol showing all the instruments. I only have this other box that shows up. Or could you do a tutorial of how to load Edirol?
Best explanatory video on youtube! Thanks a lot
As long as you can sing on pitch really well it should work fine
Awesome tutorial! short and sweet.
Give that man a medal!

Thank you so much! Exactly what I was looking for! Excellent tutorial! Thanks!
nice! I just realize that Reatune can do a better job than a free vst like Fretkeys i used before, thanks! :)
No sound demo??
Can i do it for a violin too?

@nick sadler Hey thanks! just checked and as far as i can tell they dont have a mac compatible version. There are plenty of options out there though!
nice but the instrument track is not recording the midi notes so i can alter and edit them later. Anyone have the fix?
Hello. i would like to have Guitar riffs in midi files to use in my styles that a create in cubase to put in my korg pa3x. Can you help me? Thanks
It means there is no need to buy a Roland GK-3 and a GR-55? Great!
Exactly Man!
this appears to be monophonic however, but with the midi pickups that issue is solved.
to bad it doesn't hear each string at the same time like the GK-3 does.
Awesome video, trying to get my guitar working as MIDI cont in Ableton Live 9. Any thoughts?
i couldn't get ReaTune to recognise guitar signal. need help. in this video reatune automatically gets the signal but when i added the reatune to channel fx didnt work. only dry signal. even that graphical tuning indicators didnt triggered. is that an input output problem ?
Does this only work in reaper or will it work with any daw (cubase)? Thanks!
Thank you very much - this looks fantastic
Is it possible to use it with strumming parts?
Can we use this in Ableton Live 9 or Guitar Pro 7?
Show us a Song you're doug with this, love to hear it. THANKS For The Video my Friend, God Bless & Cheers
I have this triggering a vst, but when I record no midi goes to track, any thoughts?

Probably a bit off topic, but do you know if there is something like this for logic pro? Thanks.
Thanks. What do You mean PRINT?
Wat about bending notes in the guitar, will dat bend data be converted to midi data so dat we mite put up a sax or a flute to get dat expression.
Ephraim Hills *that *that *that
God that's so annoying to read

This is so cool! Thank you!
Awesome! thanks for the video!
Awesome. Thank you for this.
Would this work for drums? Meaning, is it possible to run this setup and use a Vst drum kit as the instrument? if so, how do you map the notes in midi?
can someone send me some emails on where to find the programs and plugins to do this? or comment
Can I use a bass???
does orchestral also supported in sonar platinum? thnx :D
The problem with the gate is late notes, out of synch and out of time. If you want general idea of song its okay .
thank

You should be able to record the MIDI input on the channel that is receiving the MIDI signal
Jam Origin Midi Guitar VST plugin is a lot better. No latency, polyphone detection so you can easily play and record chords and much more... Just download from they site and try;)

Hey there dude, what software are you using and how have you connected your guitar to the computer? have you just used a Di?
Yup
Great video, thanks a bunch! Now to figure it out in FL studios and Ill be set. How is reaper? If i'm not mistaken, its free right?
It gas a free trial, and then it's $60 after that. Still cant beat that price!
You should be able to copy the reatune vst into the vst folder flstudio reads from. Manipulate mixer tracks similar to how cutthrough sets up his tracks in reaper.
Going to test this out later.
MogollonPlateau If that works you should let me know.

You can see Kenny Gioia's video on how to record just the generated MIDI: th-cam.com/video/7mPekhcLXaU/w-d-xo.html
so good can i use that plugin in ableton live 10
Thanks!
great tutorial dude! can i get EDIROL for mac? ive been trying to get a good orchestra vst for mac
how on earth do u bus? like for guitars or the drums n such:(
amazing idea
Can i use this in massive?
Yes it should work with any plugin that taked midi as an input
I use JamOrigin
Very cool but the latency isn't good. You should do something about that.
+Paul TheSkeptic He explained that he was on a low-spec PC causing the latency.

Wow, I thought this was IMPOSSIBLE xD thanks so much man
thanks, dude
Its not Polyphonic meaning it does single notes only ....does not do strumming or chords or individual notes sustained over notes

just hook a usb mike into computer?
this is great
Nice!
nice video
Good, tanks...
what program
This is using reatune in Reaper, but you should be able to use reatune in other DAWs
+CutThroughRecordings Hi, where can i get a copy of reatune as i am not using Reaper. Would you be able to email me the dll file or link to download? Thanks.
