Hey Casey and Brent! First time I'm catching the podcast (was looking for Fanatic stuff). After the remarks about the nasty comments on Brent's speedpaint video, I wanted to leave a comment *thanking* Brent for getting me into this hobby.
I used to build model airplanes and paint them as a kid with my dad (Testor's enamel in the glass bottles!). Back in 2019/2020, I came across Brent's video on getting started painting where he painted those barbarians and just showed basecoating, adding a wash, and some highlights. I was already getting back into D&D, and your vid gave me the motivation to out and buy a set of paints and start painting, which brings me to...
The set I got was the Army Painter D&D "Adventurer's Set", which also came with a mini, brush, and a video tutorial on how to paint the mini. I was amazed with how well it came out, and I've been hooked ever since. I almost have exclusively ~100 Army Painter paints, mostly due to availability around here, and am looking forward to Fanatic so I don't have to fight some of the colors as much. I'm not into Wargaming, but I really appreciate any of your videos on paints and painting, and also how most of your videos feel like they keep the "beginner" in mind, even if that's not the primary audience (as someone who gets to paint maybe every other weekend, I still feel like a beginner). Maybe a video on getting into airbrushing (with a "quiet" compressor)? Anyway, thanks again!

I bought their old set when they put it at half price. At two dollar USD that is an amazing price.
The paint isn’t bad at all. Me and my kid have already gone through and used 90% of the colors. And emptied, at least five bottles. And we still have a couple months to wait for the Fanatic full set to come in.
Definitely not rich, especially after buying the full set. But as soon as I have this paid off, I’m going back and filling up some gaps in my pro acril and solvent paints.
Painting is all I do. There is absolutely no way any kid should be upset with getting the old war paints even at regular price. The only thing that will upset them is you telling them the bee ones are better.
My kid just makes it work. They find a paint that just doesn’t seem to work they’re like ‘oh I’m gonna set this to the side for another project.’ They’re not disappointed they just learned a fact, and found a solution immediately. Kids are just amazing. My first thought is where on my gigantic wall of paint am I gonna find a replacement lol.

I think if you use a higher quality resin for printing, you can avoid most of the shrinkage / gap issues. I've had very little problem printing and assembling some of the larger OPR Alien Hives creatures.

about 3d printing 25mm models as someone who only prints due to financial reasons, 25mm truescale is HORRID to print. I much prefer the chonkier prints that look a bit goofy at first but get better with paint and whatnot because they just won't break under duress like all of the stuff that I get from "historical" or "modern" prints. if you wanna try to look at this from a "pure" angle, look at turnbase miniatures' stuff which is cool and detailed but spindly, vs anvil industries' stuff which is chonkier while still being modern

Glad to hear AP new stuff is looking good. I’m a big fan of speed paints. I love my 1.0 set personally. I have tons of pro acryl at this point in my life and I like the look of a one brand line up on my paint rack so I’ll probably skip this one but the new color triad system sounds super cool. I want to know more about how they airbrush as that’s one huge thing about pro acryl I really like. Pro acryl is great for air and paint brush

Congrats on 100! I look forward to many more. I've been a mini painter/D&D player for decades and this year I'm finally taking my first steps into Warhammer. I feel you guys deserve part of the credit/blame 😆
Today's conversation was very refreshing to hear that other hobbyists are running into the same pain points with 3d printing files as I do. It feels like some sculptors do a good job of taking into account the final model's size and materials and trying to make them less fragile and more paintable. Other sculptors go for what looks great blown up on your computer screen, but the final model might not even survive support removal because it's too fragile, or else it's cluttered with way too many details and textures for the size of the model. A level of texture and detail that looks good at 75mm+ doesn't necessarily work well at 32mm or 28mm.
Keep hobbying on, and thanks for all the great videos!

FTR, I also use a RedGrass palette and I don't have smell problem. But each time I finish a sheet, I wash the sponge by hand with a couple drops of dish soap. I also keep a "rewetting" bottle by it, which is a dollar store condiment squeeze bottle, filled with water and a couple drops of dish soap.

My red grass wet pallet also smells! I initially thought it was the sponge that needed replacement, but that didn’t solve the problem.
So I assumed mold in the plastic. I cleaned the entire pallet (top and bottom) first with IPA, rinsed it, still smelled. I even used a tooth brush to make sure I cleaned every nook and cranny.
Next I cleaned it all with bleach, rinsed it, still smelled. Upon final examination I’ve discovered that the only actual smelly part is the plastic seal material on the lid of the pallet. Don’t know what’s causing the smell, but if you do, Brett, please let me know! Maybe something with the material of the seal?

I am not sure if I am a fan of the 6 triad system or any triad system. Generally, you want to go from warm shadows to cool highlights or cool shadows to warm highlights about 1/12 to all the way up to 1/2 rotation of the color wheel away. The AP Finatic only changes the value from what I can see. Also it wouldn't be too much to ask for someone to mix the in-between colors rather than grab something already premixed. You only need 5 colors generally to make almost any color, having more colors than that is just convince. Granted I dabbled in oil painting miniatures for a while so maybe I am used to mixing colors.

Hey, those large prints. Instead of doing all that with miliput, get yourself some Aves epoxy sculpt. It's a two part, air dry putty. It smooths with water (thought they do have a solvent that works a bit better). Gives you an hour or two of working time. You can tool it, and sculpt in details.
I do full sized models, so I am used to dealing with issues like this on things like 2' tall resin casts. I use Aves all the time. It work great for situations like you have.

My only concern with 3D printed resin is the layer lines. They are SO CLOSE to being amazing but I feel like the layer lines always show, even on the super high resolution models. Mostly on the flatter surface or gentle slopes like a space marine pauldron. As painters, how close are we to getting 3D prints that have the same surface finish as cast resin or injection molded models?

    • @pbkobold
      @pbkobold 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Check your settings to make sure you're printing with thin layers. I see layers when printing on a Mars 3 (4k screen) with 50um layers, but I cannot see any layers even on pauldrons when printing at 20um.

Also, things like surface area, printing angle, and temperature will cause more prominent lines. I found out my space heater was causing lines, and the models came out prestine when I changed to use a brewing heating belt instead.

Printer gaps is definitely a problem. Sometimes it can be the presupported files dont have enough supports to prevent wapring. Resin choice is a major factor for warpage. The knowledge base behind what resin has low warping, what is consistent, and what is good for miniatures is lacking. I use Prozen 4K because it has some flex and doesn't warp that much, but resin is expensive to just try every single kind that is out there and I prefer to stick to what works for me.

The medium used in the paint is the worst smelling. Citadel Contrast paints are notoriously smelly - and they have more medium than the regular paints. And yes, I have the same thing where my wet palette smells like that burnt-rubber-like smell.
I have one particularly old pot of Devlan Mud and it is SO horrid it makes whatever box or container it’s stored in reek. If it wasn’t an out of production classic, I’d have thrown it away long ago because it just smells dangerous to be around on my desk!

Why did you have to make that joke about the "last person to buy the old war paints"... Don't get me wrong it was a funny bit, and as per usual Brent's sarcasm sold the gag well... but then just this weekend my best friend calls me up all excited "I'm following in your mini painting ways for my DnD game! I even went and bought this starter set of paints from a company called Army Painter". The whole bit replays in my head, but now in a tragic echoing flashback... thankfully I got to him before he shook most of them (sadly he out of excitement seeing the mixer balls for the first time shook up the first one he picked up) so hopefully he can drain the ketchup water successfully.

Late to the party here but I just wanted to point out that Brent's work with his microscope and learning about aluminum vs mica flakes, and the average hobbyist opinion (not correctly) of one material being high quality and the other lower quality, points out an issue with mini painters: not understanding their tools. Maybe because they don't necessarily view themselves as artists, or are playing catch up in understanding materials compared to other art forms, but it reflects in what the collective seems to need/want out of products. We get upset when a gold metallic doesn't one coat over black when really it should be going over another colour such as brown or tan. Collectively we have a hard time valuing some properties and therefor have a hard-time applying these properties "appropriately". It really is a big part of what separates high level painters from everyone else. So companies, when creating products, are forced to thread the line between people that don't really care about painting and just want to play and the people that really care about painting as an artistic expression. In other art forms knowing the pigment composition matters to many people, in mini painting we could give a flip less... which can be very liberating.

I was shaking them and I was putting steel balls in them to mix them up but they were just awful. I didn't know it was the paint that was bad because people like you guys kept saying that brand doesn't matter and that all paints do the same thing just differently. It almost made me quit the hobby. Luckily I got some Vallejo and it opened my eyes for just how awful the AP paints where. It's literally night and day. AP Warpaints up until now are just AWFUL paints no one should buy them really. i wonder how many people got AP paints for their first paint, thought they were just bad at painting because they couldnt figure them out and then quit the hobby. Not zero I imagine.

Thumbnails making me a little uncomfortable lately guys, I think you are sending signals to the wrong group of people. I get that you're just goofing around but I just didn't find it very funny.
