    the interviewer probably went home and burned all his Hawaiian shirts and now wears a black leather jacket

      Donnie Sutherland actually always gets the most out of a band interview. Bands liked his questions

    I saw them on this same tour in New Zealand, I was 17 , I moved to Australia a few years later , and I remember this music show , it was on every sat morning between 9am - 12

    Is a Hawaiian shirt like a plain t-shirt to Australians?
    Also, anyone notice the elevator music in the background!

      Australia is a weird f’n place. They’ve got giant hopping mice with pouches on their tummies, that like to beat people up. They’ve got super-aggressive, hyper-poisonous spiders that will stand up on their back legs and charge at you. The water is infested with man-eating sharks, killer jellyfish, and venomous sea snakes. There’s a giant dog fence stretching across the entire country. The toilets flush backwards, Christmas is in the middle of summer, and everything’s upside down.
      Why not wear Hawaiian shirts and listen to Muzak?

    Joey: "We met in the elevator".
    Yeah, no tension there. By the end of the Ramones, no one spoke to each other. They'd do a show, get in the van and drove in silence. It's sad they didn't get the respect and admiration they deserved as a truly remarkable, talented band until most of the original four Ramones had passed away. Thankfully, we have their music forever.

      It's absolutely unbelievable they didn't get along at all, I was watching another interview, and when Johnny looked at Dee dee he looked away instantly they were psychopaths.

    • @herecomesaregular8418
      @herecomesaregular8418 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Ravens____8LJ Not sure the term "psychopath" quite fits here. They just didn't get along. They wouldn't be the first band to make good music while hating each other.

      @herecomesaregular8418 Rght now I'm cleaning up with "Rock n roll high school ". They might not have gotten along, but I f love their songs.

      @@Ravens____8LJ That’s what happens when one member of a band becomes the ringleader aka “drill sergeant”, and establishes a pecking order within the band. Especially a band made up of childhood friends whose relationships predate the band itself. I’ve been in several working bands through the years, and one thing I can say for sure is that being in a *WORKING* band is basically like being in a marriage, only you’re married to 3 or 4 other people, and there’s no tax breaks. Just like in any marriage, once the magic is gone and you have to force yourself to stay committed, you end up resenting your partner/partners. Obviously that’s what happened to the Ramones. I’d say the magic was gone after Road To Ruin, or to put it into a year - 1979. That’s also right around the time the “Linda situation” began. Maybe a year later, I dunno.

    • @Mraquanetchris

      Some info I came across stated that the concept and running of the band was Tommy until he left, reportedly after Johnny hit his wife ( she made a joke about kicking Johnny out ). Anyhow, after Tommy left it was Johnny's band. Dee Dee was supposedly scared to death of Johnny, who would hit Dee Dee during rehearsals. Joey went into the bottle. And then the thing with Linda. Great music, but totally dysfunctional. @@Shikta-poobah67

    This was the very beginning of the "Linda Situation".........you can tell the tension from Joey.

    • @michaelr.4878
      @michaelr.4878 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I wonder who 'took Linda' out for supper that night. hehe. Maybe this was the night that Marky went down to the pool in the hotel and found Johnny and Linda holding hands in the hot tub. haha. I'm not joking. That is probably my favorite 'Ramones story'. He has told it several times in different interviews. Johnny didn't strike me as the type of guy who would be into holding hands with a girl. hehe. But I guess he loved her and did what it took. They were together until he died..so that is like 25 years...and that is a rarity in today's society. So maybe more people should hold hands in the hot tub. hehe.

    • @MrGarage
      @MrGarage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Marky Ramone has stated several times that the Linda situation was nowhere near as bad as people have made it out to be throughout the years. He even says Joey had a new girlfriend within weeks lol

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MrGarage From what I’ve heard, that’s kind of true, but Joey never really let it go. He would always invariably bring it up at some point, and this went on for many years. It wasn’t constant, but it never quite went away. Joey could really hold a grudge.

    • @MrGarage
      @MrGarage ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Shikta-poobah67 That's right. At the end it was Joey who tried to make amends but alas Johnny was too proud and he ended regretting it in his later years. It's such a bummer given the happiness they brought to so many people.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MrGarage Yeah, it was a shame the way it all went down, but in the end I think it was pretty clear that Johnny and Linda were meant to be together. They really truly loved each other, and nothing’s ever going to get in the way of that. I absolutely loved Joey, but I think with him it was more a case of him being in love with the concept of being in love (ie. a hopeless romantic), rather than actually being in love with Linda. It totally shows in his songwriting style.

      Yeah this was right about the time things really started to go south between Joey and Johnny. Not just the Linda thing, but there was a lot of tension between those two during the End Of The Century sessions. Spector pitted them against each other and played a lot of head games.

      @@sexobscuraI found this on wikipedia... "Dissociative identity disorder (DID), previously known as multiple personality disorder (MPD), is a mental disorder characterized by the maintenance of at least two distinct and relatively enduring personality states. This is accompanied by memory gaps beyond what would be explained by ordinary forgetfulness"... doesn't really seem to fit what Johnny is doing

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Ramones were fueled by mental health issues and personality disorders. It’s what made them great. Joey was extremely OCD and had spent time in a mental institution, Dee Dee had multiple personalities and would sometimes hallucinate and have violent episodes, Johnny was a massive control freak and could be a real sadist at times, and Tommy, though considered normal by many, reportedly was an introverted closet freak (not sure of details). Marky was probably the most ‘normal’ band member, but he was a terrible drunk for many years.
