He wasn't entirely joking. He suffered from a rather severe case of schizophrenia. He actually underwent electroshock therapy when he was young as a result of it. So that's the real reason so many of the Ramones songs dealt with mental health issues. He was just writing what he knew.

One time my teenaged neighbors were having a pool party , and their friends' Metal band was playing. When I got home from work , I put on "Rocket To Russia". My Mom asked me if that was my stereo or the band outside , because , she thought , if it WAS the Metal band , she was surprised how much better their second set sounded.

I'm 62 and still wear my Converse high-tops, skinny 501's and of course my Ramones t-shirt! I will cry the day it wears out. So funny how their look and sound is so timeless. It was unique and ahead of its time when it came out. I will never forget my time at CGBG's. Man was the East Village the place to be in the day...rot our brains and rebel properly, not the crap these days. The Ramones and Sex Pistols will forever harbor a special place in my brain! Or what's left of it. LOL! ✌🖕🤤🤯🤘🍻👟💊🚬☮

@@jamesdemetro2145 This I can say about the Ramones - they were REAL. That was not a gimmick, persona, or act. What you saw on the stage was what you saw in the street. My pal and I had just caught their show at Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, Alabama, and a little while afterward we wandered into a Shop-A-Snak near UAB and there they were, with the same sodas, donuts, and Yoo-Hoo we had come after. They didn't even change clothes after the show. They signed the posters we had just ripped down from nearby. I'll never forget it if I live to be 200.
