happy new year! I started 2022 off browsing reddit when a clip of Tyra Banks barking like a dog popped up on my feed. I was reminded of some unsettling yet entertaining tv shows that she’s done in the past - so I spent the last few days watching clips of the TYRA show, America’s next top model, and other various appearances that she’s had. turns out she’s kind of a menace to society and aspiring models that just wanted to take some nice pictures for a magazine or something. today I’ll react and comment on some of the questionable things that I remember seeing back in the day. Dear Tyra, you scare me.
There is an episode when the models have to do pictures in a really cold water and Tyra said "if you don't feel good, just tell us". And one model started to say she can't do the pictures because the cold water and Tyra said that modeling is a really difficult work and she had to bear it. The model started to suffer from hypothermia and the paramedics arrived. When she was being treated, Tyra said "WHY SHE DIDN'T TELL US ANYTHING".
OMG I think I remember this one
Wasn’t there also an episode where they made the models stand in the freezing cold wind on top of a building in nothing but their undies? and this one really thin model got eliminated for not being able to look comfortable enough or something??

Like I never understood what was the reasoning behind making everything on set x100 times more dangerous and uncomfortable for the models (besides drama). Like? Yes I'm sure modelling is not an easy job and it will be uncomfortable in many cases but I don't think they will make you freeze on purpose or purposefully get you on a very tall building while u have fear of heights. I'm sure if a model is uncomfortable with something they can easily apply for a less demanding photoshoot

There was an episode where one of the model’s close friends died during her time on set. The next photo shoot, Tyra decided they’d be posing in coffins at a burial site. It was literally the most insulting and disrespectful thing she could ever do, I was absolutely horrified.

The show absolutely conceived things purely to create dramatic storylines. I remember the redhead in this video, Kayla, was a lesbian and she was forced to kiss a male model during a photoshoot, despite her extreme discomfort. I’m absolutely certain no one would have had to kiss the male model if they didn’t know she was gay. Unbelievable.
Not to defend it since this is horrible, but they probably had to decide this photoshoot and get the approval way before Kahlen's friend died. So it's just a coincidence there.

But in general I agree that they shouldn't force models to do things they're really uncomfortable with!
As a black women I cringed when they gave that girl a weave her hair texture isn't made for a weave they could of left her bald.

I remember when I first watched that scene about her gapped teeth. I literally started tearing up ,she sounded so optimistic when she said “why not” ad looked so happy. But Tyra said that it was “Unmarketable” this scene aged horribly
and then when she got another girl to have her teeth drilled so that she would have a gapped tooth only to drop her not long after...like bitch what?

While the idea of Tyra having all the ANTM girls “change races” was absolutely awful, the girl who was made to look like a “traditional African woman” (as they said) is actually half black. The whole ordeal was a mess, but I just wanted to throw that out there.
Goddamn that's awful 😭 I can't imagine what she was thinking back then or even now, remembering this part of the show.

But in the episode, the biracial woman who was made to look African actually said, “I’m half black, so to be made up to look like a traditionally African woman is really exciting to me.” Idk how she feels about it now, but at the time she seemed okay with it. And just in case there’s any misinterpretation, I’m not saying that anything about the “race swapping” episode was okay or excusable. I’m just pointing out that there was a little bit of context left out regarding that specific model.

The gap tooth fix makes me unreasonably mad because that girl looked so beautiful with her gap and it was such a cute character defining trait and they took that from her against her will. The hair changes are whatever to me, it’ll grow back and you shouldn’t put all your self worth in one body part. But the teeth really get to me, Idk why. That and ya know the unending chimera of other problems this show had lol
As somebody whos into fashion and has had a gap tooth all their life, i’ve always been told to fix my teeth. It took ONE person telling me never to fix my gap for me to realise that that is absolute bullshit, Tyra’s right. Your gap tooth is all they’re gonna see. So keep it, it’s the thing that will make your smile stand out, its iconic. A gap tooth isn’t even a strong medical issue or something you need to get fixed, getting it fixed is purely for aesthetics. I don’t know if you actually have a gap tooth or if you’re just really passionate but getting your gap fixed is one of those things that will never not hurt. A gap in your teeth is somthing you only get made fun of bc its different despite it having no effect on your daily life. It should never be an insecuity nor should anybody be telling you that you.re not beautiful because of it. I get wanting to fit into the beauty standard, but being a part of the ebauty standard and being beautiful are two very different things and the gap tooth thing proves just how blurry the line is getting between these two

Tyra and her co-stars are like the movie mean girls. Spiteful, mean, and they love making people suffer, or trick into making a mistake so they can slam them. Totally narcissistic, sociopathic behaviour.
I recently saw a video about this show and specifically Tyra where contestants came forward and said that being on the show was horrible. Apparently there was purposely very little food in the house so that the models would argue with each bc everyone was hangry. Not to mention eating disorders were encouraged. If they wanted more food they had to buy it with their own money. Also lots of colorism going on which was really harmful for the black models. It made me question why on earth did I watch this show as a teenager.

My sister at one point was a model and she had wanted to go on the show and watched it religiously when we were younger. I would watch it with her sometimes and even as a kid I told her she shouldn’t go on the show because the models would go through a lot of dangerous task and sets. After rewatching the show when it was put on Netflix, my sister was glad that she was never old enough to participate in it and how toxic the environment really was
I was a model in my teen years
As a pre-teen I loved this show and thought Tyra was sooo progressive for the industry… and at the time, honestly she was.
now all I do is look back and cringe and hope these ladies managed to fix their hair at some point

These girls are so beautiful naturally, they should be expressing their natural beauty, not forced to change it. I'm honestly disappointed in Tyra, to say the least, she should be empowering women to be comfortable with their bodies and their natural beauty, not tearing them down and making them feel bad about a trait that's not even a flaw.

This show is so sad and heartbreaking to watch years later. That Alison chick encourages her fans to hate in Lisa. I used to adore Alison and then I heard she doesn’t stop her fans from being hateful towards other contestants. This show was and is toxic.
