Just in case your are curious. I took the hdmi mod and dock you have here and implemented a cheap GBA consolizer. I removed the internals from the dock and placed the components inside a 3d printed woozle GBA case from thingiverse. I soldered everything as normal and the only modifications I made were: 1. Used a mini usb c female breakout pcb with the 24 connections and used that along with a right angle adapter to connect to the dock internals. 2. Modified the 3d print to have a slightly higher height to make it easier to accommodate the internals. Open hole on right side for power to connect to the dock internals. 3. Desoldered the snes controller port and attached with wires 28 awg to give me better flexibility of placing in the case. I can share pictures and more details if you want but to me it was a cheaper way to get the gba consolizer.

Maybe they can design a newer version to have a switch (like how the GBA cart reader has a switch to read either GB / GBC or GBA games) when the GBA is inserted into the dock. This switch would shut off the power from the AA batteries / USB-C battery pack, only allowing power from the dock's USB-C connection. For the HDMI connection, maybe in the future we can find a way to pass through the HDMI signal through the USB-C dock connection, then put the HDMI-out on the dock (very similar to a switch). I'm just brainstorming; great to see all these different mods coming out! Can't wait to see what more come out / combine in the future!
Idea, I know I’m late, but here goes… Make a new USB-C battery board, with this docking feature built into the board, as well as video out enabled on the board. Even if it requires a new case, one with the battery compartment removed and this mounts to the back of the shell, I think everyone would be fine with that. And the dock, it needs one more than added in, built in wireless connection for the remotes. A nice 2.4ghz wireless connection built in would really help out, especially not needing to plug any adapters in. And the dock needs HDMI out and maybe even USB-C video out to help future proof for future devices. Maybe even a small FPGA chip in the dock that has proper integer scaling built in. I’d pay for that for sure.
I recently built the version of this that also does HDMI out over usb-c. Its a brilliant bit of kit. The dock itself could do with a better design, all that weight resting solely on the USB-c connector and not support for the console. That said it is still a great way to play, just plug the USB-c in and your away. The HDMI version also has a 5v out pad so you can mod a rechargeable battery pack so it charges when docked two. (no need for two usb-c ports on the bottom then)
It would make sense to have the USB charging as well, and in theory a more Switch-like dock with power and HDMI output would be a great idea. The tricky part would be fitting everything into the GBA in a tidy manner.
For the usecase of connecting a controller while on HDMI, it might have made a lot more sense to have a mod that installed a Bluetooth receiver chip. That eliminates a lot of cons. No more case modding. Slight easier install. No need for a USB power adapter or to remove the batteries. The downsides to such an approach is that it restricts you to Bluetooth controllers, it might be hard to sync a controller, and it requires batteries. Alternatively, a future version of this mod should go full out and incorporate video over USB and proper support for batteries (either automatic switching between internal/output power, or going full out with a rechargeable battery)
So the perfect Switch GBA is: 1-A dock that allows playing on HDMI on the right proportions, ultra low latency 2-Don't need to fit a cable on the top 3-The dock turn off the connection to the batteries and power up the unit by itself, no need to remove the batteries 4-Allows bluetooth audio and controllers at same time without affecting the latency 5-Allows those famous controllers ports known for confort like GC, Classic Mini Consoles and USB 6-Allows firmware updates to give support to max number of different controllers like the ones for people with special necessities such as Xbox Adaptive Controller. You can map the buttons on controllers using a software and uploading it to your dock(for example, some people want to disable accidental Left Analog inputs and focus only on Dpad) 7-Everything is done by a USBC interface at the bottom 8-The USBC can be angled to not break easily 9-A precut shell ready for all those modding And of course 10-IPS LCD/OLED panel, the most important one, the one that gave a boom to GBA modding scene Yeah manufacturers, take notes haha. A full 9 in 1 modkit.
Definitely like to see HDMI through the dock like you are saying and power delivery to the console is a huge let down. I feel like that is something that should be definitely incorporated into a later revision
Can you please do the new updated version!? I have the hdmi integrated version that HISPEEPIDO sells. I haven’t installed it yet. I’m waiting on the new speaker and amp pcb. I was just hoping to have a reference video. 🤷♂️ no big
I'm a big fan of the channel and would love to see you do the updated version of this dock, hispeedido have one now which has their ips v5, hdmi and dock in one kit that has the battery protection and charging support for battery mods. I've just bought the kit for myself for my first GBA mod
I think this kit misses a huge piece of functionality...The other things I can overlook, but if you are going to have a USB-c port added to the device, There is very little that would stop you from being able to add a rechargeable battery to this. or to even have it powered by the USB-C while connected. This mod leaves you still dependent on batteries, from what I am hearing here. and that just sucks. I am assuming later iterations of this will add that functionality. At least, I hope it does.
The mini console port is also just the Wii remote expansion port, making it the exact port the classic controller uses. I wonder if it's compatible with classic controller?
It probably wouldn't be clean, but you could cludge the HDMI out to be beside the USB C and add an HDMI cable to the dock. Not the best solution as you'd need to align two ports to the dock, but it would get you most of the way to an all-in-one type of thing
The console needs a recharging circuit Li-on battery mod USBC charging whilst playing console for sudden on the go game play. HDMI out to tv Console screen shutdown whilst playing on TV Controller still working whilst docked and via tv so console is essentially a pre pre generation switch. A cartridge that has SD memory and an OS to allow more games onto be added and selected via a menu so that it becomes the pre switch switch. Other than that.. this modded game boy advance looks great.. never really had one of these as a kid but looks cool all the same.
Don't use those cutters on any hard plastic including the factory shell The cracking is natural because you're applying a twisting action to a non bendable surface
The casing needs to cradle the shape of the GBA, that floating form just gives me anxiety. Too easy to snap it off. Revise the 'dock' shell to have a breakaway port for incorporating hdmi out mods as upgrades. We might have to double dock port to get it done, since playing nice with other mods hasn't gotten to where it should be yet. Maybe someday we'll see a single USBC output, and multiple mods utilizing that same port in complete harmony. Power, charging, HDMI A/V output, wireless controller data/controller input...
That’s super cool, my gba’s ribbon connector (not the cable the part on the mobo) cooked so I can’t see anything on my gba. Once I replace that I’m gonna mod it like crazy.
I'd like to address something nobody seems to talk about: the part of the dock which is supposed to be in contact with the gba is FLAT, while the console is CURVED. This makes the dock seem it hasn't been designed for the console, and honesly makes me uneasy, since the USB port sticks out a lot of the dock's shell, and could probably break. I'd suggest a redesign of the dock having this in mind. Also, about the dock powering the GBA while docked), could'n this be done through a full power switch bypass (soldering the power source to a point before the power switch) and having a switch inside the dock itself? So, you would just keep the console switch off and turn it on through the dock switch, and the batteries would stay isolated from the power source. Lastly, it would be nice to have this accept usb joysticks too, but i suppose decoding the signal from them would be hard...
I would say that the insane battery draw is the biggest problem with the HDMI kits 🤔 I'm pretty used to have tethered controllers and having the gba tethered in that way is pretty similar. I'd rather have concerns about micro HDMI to break after some time
They keep getting SO close to a gba switch. But just barely missing the mark. I want to one day see a comprehensive full out mod for the gba that will allow it to act like a switch.
sounds good, but it needs a hdmi out via usb c, usb 2 or 3 (so you could use a wireless usb adapter with a modern controller) and power up the gba with the need for batteries- if your playing it docked.
I hope funnyplaying eventually releases a motherboard with a h618 and a wifi module already soldered on, with solder pads for original gba chips. USB-C io right from the motherboard for docking, charging, and display out would be nice. Definitely possible to do. I mean an orange pi zero2w is literally $20 shipped.
You should do a walk through on the Hardware you have liked enough to keep. I assume repair channels have most Hardware leave at some point. So I would expect only the unique would hang around. Like there Genesis pack you just did the sound on for the Laserdisc player.
I’m not sure about the dock. USB-C is pretty unreliable compared to earlier standards, just relying on the plug for stability sounds like asking for trouble, especially if not used with a wireless controller.
I think that having the GBA suspended on a USB port is going to cause unnecessary wear and tear on the port, and I also think that this really needs button remapping. The A and B buttons on the GBA map much better to the Y and B buttons on a SNES controller.
It should be only the matter of time until we get an all-in-one HDMI kit. We have the video out kit and a controller kit so the groundwork is there. Someone just needs to come along and Reese peanut butter cup it and boom, the all-in-one GBA HDMI kit
Great video!👍 What I would like to know: Difficulty level (1-10) for installing the kit for someone with average experience ? How long you needed to do it?
I LOVE the addition of the Wii Classic controller plug. I don't have a SNES but I have a Wii U and SNES mini and was worried I'd need to buy another wireless controller. I can't wait for them to get DP Alt mode working, it's 100% possible, but for now the video out workaround works. Sidenote: do you know why Nintendo used only 3 screws to secure the motherboard? There's several extra screw holes so I don't know why this is the case. Side sidenote: is this safe to use with non rechargeable AA's? I don't know if it's safe to wire the power right to the terminals like that.
Sounds like a v2 of this kit needs to at least include a battery component so that the battery disconnect can be managed by the USB-C port, rather than requiring users to completely remove batteries.
WARNING! Something that I was just made aware of is that in order to use the dock, you must first remove the batteries from the GBA! Since the dock also powers the console the batteries must be removed. I would also consider this a Con since it makes using the dock a little more inconvenient.

(no need for two usb-c ports on the bottom then)
can you link to the one you bought?
It would make sense to have the USB charging as well, and in theory a more Switch-like dock with power and HDMI output would be a great idea. The tricky part would be fitting everything into the GBA in a tidy manner.
Pretty cool mod and video bro!
Thank you 🙏
This is mind blowing 🤯..the power of the retro community is un-stopable
Or the "blindness of nostalgia making buck"
But the GBA simply rocks
I love the tacky ribbon cable. It looks factory. 100% agree on the things they could have added.
Another fantastic video, Tito!
Thank you Todd! 🙏
Like everyone else is saying it'd be really great to get your take on their latest version, with the integrated LCD screen and the USBC video-out.
U didn’t even show us using it with a tv…
He did at the beginning of the video a little bit but should have done more gameplay at the end of the video
The hdmi out is a separate mod right? Might be misleading to have it shown with a TV since the dock doesn't do that
So the perfect Switch GBA is:
1-A dock that allows playing on HDMI on the right proportions, ultra low latency
2-Don't need to fit a cable on the top
3-The dock turn off the connection to the batteries and power up the unit by itself, no need to remove the batteries
4-Allows bluetooth audio and controllers at same time without affecting the latency
5-Allows those famous controllers ports known for confort like GC, Classic Mini Consoles and USB
6-Allows firmware updates to give support to max number of different controllers like the ones for people with special necessities such as Xbox Adaptive Controller. You can map the buttons on controllers using a software and uploading it to your dock(for example, some people want to disable accidental Left Analog inputs and focus only on Dpad)
7-Everything is done by a USBC interface at the bottom
8-The USBC can be angled to not break easily
9-A precut shell ready for all those modding
And of course
10-IPS LCD/OLED panel, the most important one, the one that gave a boom to GBA modding scene
Yeah manufacturers, take notes haha.
A full 9 in 1 modkit.
*I wish something similar for DS
There is still no HD 720p solution for DS Lite.
🤷♂️ no big
Congrats on 100K!
An all in one kit with only one usb-c would be gret for sure 🙂
Congrats on 100k subs 🥳🎉
The mini console port is also just the Wii remote expansion port, making it the exact port the classic controller uses. I wonder if it's compatible with classic controller?
Engineers all over the world screamed over that USB C implementation
what a great time to be alive!
It probably wouldn't be clean, but you could cludge the HDMI out to be beside the USB C and add an HDMI cable to the dock. Not the best solution as you'd need to align two ports to the dock, but it would get you most of the way to an all-in-one type of thing
It would be cool if they made a next version of this dock that was all in one, adding HDMI and blutooth along with the same controller ports!
I've been waiting for this one.
The console needs a recharging circuit
Li-on battery mod
USBC charging whilst playing console for sudden on the go game play.
HDMI out to tv
Console screen shutdown whilst playing on TV
Controller still working whilst docked and via tv so console is essentially a pre pre generation switch.
A cartridge that has SD memory and an OS to allow more games onto be added and selected via a menu so that it becomes the pre switch switch.
Other than that.. this modded game boy advance looks great.. never really had one of these as a kid but looks cool all the same.
I can't wait to actually turn a GBA into a Switch, a Battery, HDMI, and controller mod in one clean package
You can try using Wii Control Pro, it’s the same port that Nes/Snes mini. Thanks for this video Tito!
it would be great a fusion of the batery mod plus the hdmi mod all in one
That would be a dream!
Don't use those cutters on any hard plastic including the factory shell
The cracking is natural because you're applying a twisting action to a non bendable surface
Would love to see some psp content. Such an underrated system. Wish there was more mods for it.
I would love it if the docked GBA could output to your TV while still allowing you to use your controller. Maybe a future revision could provide that?
I hope so!
Personally, I prefer using the gameboy advance as it’s own controller. GBA to GameCube with GBA2GC cable to control GBA and GB games just feels great.
now we need this kind of mods for the New3DSxl
You are soo close to 100k
I hope funnyplaying eventually releases a motherboard with a h618 and a wifi module already soldered on, with solder pads for original gba chips. USB-C io right from the motherboard for docking, charging, and display out would be nice. Definitely possible to do. I mean an orange pi zero2w is literally $20 shipped.
I’m case your wondering they’re are official ways to play GBA on the tv, the gba player attached to the GameCube does just that.
You should do a walk through on the Hardware you have liked enough to keep. I assume repair channels have most Hardware leave at some point. So I would expect only the unique would hang around. Like there Genesis pack you just did the sound on for the Laserdisc player.
always prided myself as a decent solderer. then i watch this and i'm like "i know nothing"
Even if this didn’t have the video signal, having power/battery charge should’ve been a no-brainer.
I’m not sure about the dock. USB-C is pretty unreliable compared to earlier standards, just relying on the plug for stability sounds like asking for trouble, especially if not used with a wireless controller.
Now I wonder what you could possibly do to make it the ultimate Gameboy. Maybe a 3D screen or something. I'm sure I'll be amazed at what comes next
Eres increíble tito tito
I think that having the GBA suspended on a USB port is going to cause unnecessary wear and tear on the port, and I also think that this really needs button remapping. The A and B buttons on the GBA map much better to the Y and B buttons on a SNES controller.
It should be only the matter of time until we get an all-in-one HDMI kit. We have the video out kit and a controller kit so the groundwork is there. Someone just needs to come along and Reese peanut butter cup it and boom, the all-in-one GBA HDMI kit
Great video!👍
What I would like to know:
Difficulty level (1-10) for installing the kit for someone with average experience ?
How long you needed to do it?
What is it with these things and getting so close to perfection? Hope to see the future dock that actually just does it all.
You need to remove the batteries before using the kit. The mod is designed to provide more power for the new 720p kit and it will damage batteries.
I'm dumb, does this mod allow the system to be used with an elgato capture card for streaming?
Sounds like a v2 of this kit needs to at least include a battery component so that the battery disconnect can be managed by the USB-C port, rather than requiring users to completely remove batteries.
