    I just followed this tutorial step by step with a new shell, buttons, IPS 3.0 screen, and the battery pack. For anyone that is contemplating it, do it and just follow Tito’s guide exactly. Shipping will cost you nearly as much as his coupon code but overall it’s slightly cheaper. Now, I will say that shipping can take forever but overall but for $120, you can turn your old gameboy into a console of now. There is absolutely no need to solder, as mentioned in the video and the whole thing took me about 25 minutes start to finish even though I’ve never modded anything before. This video is the perfect guide.

    I installed this mod about 2 months ago and I really like it. As it was my first mod ever, I actually skipped soldering those wires because it was too scary. That's why I was shocked to see you could open the OSD menu without those, because mine can't do that. My touch sensor only controls the brightness. Guess that's a feature exclusive to newer revisions.

    • @mboswi

    As a content creator you have an opportunity to teach people best practices along with your tutorial. In this video you tin and solder the flex cable while it's against the back plate of the LCD. This is an easy way to cause permanent damage to your screen. Depending on the iron temp, you'll see 3 nice little heat spots on the LCD for the rest of its life.

    something that im amazed in how subtly but steadily has improved is the look of Scanline filters, which is funny because Portable consoles never had Scanlines due to using LCDs (the one exceptions being Sega's Nomad & Game Gear)
    also I'm glad more Retro enthusiasts are realizing is that the true CRT Retro look comes from actually using Anti-aliasing & Frame Blending

    • @mr.number9279
      @mr.number9279 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Portable handhelds had pixel griding which isn't much different from scanlines in terms of visual appearance. You can see each pixel easy in the grid for a GB/C/A generally.
      GBA games do look good with CRT filters though. They also help amazingly well on emulators since, well, let's be honest, almost no device has a 3:2 screen.

    • @mega77
      @mega77 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually the frame blending is very niche. Activating it cuts the smoothness of movements and adds micro jitters. Turning it off results in a way smoother image in motion. So I actually like it being removed because it looks better without it 99% of the time

    I thought I was absolutely terrible at soldering for like 8 years, turns out my soldering iron was just absolutely terrible and was trash. I got a new one and some flux (flux makes a WORLD of difference when aiming for small little conductivity/solder points) and I did this in 2 tries! (My L Button was looping so I had to open it back up and redo it)
    Even beyond the above mentioned stuff, YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO SOLDER. Just make sure you tape down that bottom touch control flap on the back of the screen.

      @@Autunite AGS screens are "laminated" from the factory. the screen is adhered to the back of the lens, and the lens is mounted to the inside of the shell. this means the screen doesn't have to fit through the hole the lens sits in on an AGS, so it can be any size as long as it all fits in the shell.
      on an AGB, the screen would normally mount to the inside of the shell, but the lens is stuck to the "outside" of the shell (it's recessed down into a little lip to make it sit flush with the front of the console though) this means if you want a laminated screen, the screen itself has to be smaller than the hole under the lens. even the stock screen is slightly bigger than that hole, because the edges of the stock screen stick to the edges of that hole. so to have a laminated screen that requires no shell modification, the screen has to be smaller than the stock screen.
      the GBC has the same issue.
      it's easier to visualize if you're looking at a shell with no screen in it. just imagine putting on the lens with a screen glued to it, and you'll realize the screen HAS to fit inside the opening directly under the lens.

    I've been thinking about getting a gba for the missus only the other day, and this would be the perfect set up for her, rechargeable battery, purple case, and a beautiful ips display.
    The price I don't think is that bad given what you're getting, so I'm going to get them for her
    Edit:
    I went ahead and got the parts, and the screen is just phenomenal, but the USB-c battery mod from funnyplaying leaves a lot to be desired imo, the fit of the charging circuit is very poor within the shell, and I had to put a piece of foam between the battery and the circuit in order to prevent the contacts from losing connection if pressure was put on the battery cover, which also didn't fit very well with the battery mod installed, and the battery wires were also too short to route properly, my only issue with the ips mod is that the flex didn't line up with the connector on the gba board properly, it's about 1.5mm off from lining up correctly which made it awkward to connect.
    now I've got it done it works well, but it needs some changes to fix the gripes I have.
    The completed system though looks amazing and our lass absolutely loves it, so the effort was definitely worth it

    I'm glad I did the soldering because the touch buttons are not working very well. They're hard to find and very finnicky. Bah! I'm content calling the OSD menu by holding Select+L+R, it's more consistent.

      @@nicholsliwilson Well the good news is that I apparently already bought 30awg wire that I have with my supplies. But the wire that they send with these kits seems to be even thinner than what I have. The spools I have are silicone wire so I'm wondering if there's a different type of coating that would come even thinner.

    "it's tough to think how they can be improved further"
    Honestly, I think we are really reaching the limit of how many / how neat the customizations can be with the available hardware and "real estate" inside a GBA shell. Laminated IPS, clock accelerator, audio amplifier with a better speakerr, rechargeable battery with USB-C.. maybe an audio jack and somehow a consolizer kit that uses the USB-C both for charging and "docking" ? And I think we are almost getting into a Ship of Theseus situation where we are barely talking about a GBA anymore hahah

      UPDATE: RGRS sent a bracket after reaching out.., it was the non production bracket and was shattered when arrived because it was thrown in a bubble mailer 😑

    This is mankind's greatest achievement
    The GBA was a perfect console and nothing since has even threatened to touch the same level; the only thing it needed was a backlit screen and this is the perfect implementation of it.

    I bought this and installed it today and I'm really impressed though getting the bracket in place and keeping it there while putting the motherboard back in was a real pain. One tip: I screwed down the motherboard too tight and got light bleed as I guess there was too much pressure on the screen so I undid the three screws a little and it's better now. It's not perfect but it's very close. Light bleed is probably a common issue.

    Been on the fence with this website and their GBA screens. Watched this video and just ordered the screen and housing. I got an Ali express screen last year and it wasn’t what I expected. Seeing that this can be done without any soldering is fascinating. Went with the clear red housing paired with clear dark blue buttons and the glow in the dark contact pads. I was debating the usb c rechargeable battery mod but using rechargeable AAs is fine with me.

    These kits really are getting better. The scanline filter looks good though a pixel grid one would be more authentic to the GB/GBA. Next feature should be color correction (not desaturation) to see the originally intended colors from the non-sRGB color space used in the original screens. Lastly, it would be nice for new mods to get rid of the buzz in the audio, especially when using headphones. That would make these consoles perfect.

    As for one of the small cons, that artificial scan line option should really have included the grid at least, though. But the frame blending and laminated lens is huge.
    I may seek out a junker GBA and do one of these or maybe a GBA Consolizer kit.
