I studied with Bill for around 14 years. what he has done for me was remarkable. i had changed my embouchure at the age of 21. it took me yeas to do. I also sostudied with Roy Stevens briefly to round out the edges. One ting I can say after all these years, these old timers know their stuff. Everyone is a critic. Even though Bill was a classical teacher ,he knew how to find these little things that Even after studying jazz in white Plains"he astounded many jazz teachers also. I loved him dearly. those teachers could not shine Bills shoes. I was his friend and assistant teacher. The teachers at the Conservatroy invited him as my Guest .William Vacchiano was Royalty .

What a national treasure. So much practical wisdom from the great man. My old teacher spent some time with Mr Vacchiano. Im not sure how long he was there at Julliard but he was given a custom designed mute as a gift when he left NY. Thank you Jeff

Thanks for sharing this video and the handout! Love his many method books. I was looking to find more of his worksm when I got directed to your website and this video, Jeff! He used to frequently drop by Giardinelli's Band Instrument Co., when I worked there in the mid 1980's. I should have asked him if I could take lessons with him, as both of my teachers studied with and they both were amazing classical trumpeters. Studio trumpet ace, Alan Rubin (RIP) was also one of his best students! Oh, the stupidity of youth!

I remember I met Ron Romm from Canadian Brass years ago and I think Vacchiano was his teacher too.
Yes. I actually have an old video about Wynton that I need to convert that interviews some of his teachers. Vacchiano might be on that.
@@JeffPurtle cool. His Piccolo teacher was a guy called Bill Fielder I think.. he featured in the Baroque Duet project Wynton did with singer Kathleen Battle. It’s on TH-cam I am sure.

There are so many editions of Arban it makes his page references meaningless, unfortunately.
The Carl Fischer version and those page numbers have been the same since the 1800s and that version and the Claude Gordon annotated version happened in the early 1980s but then Carl Fischer did a new version with Tom Hooten and his wife, Jennifer Marotta. The page layout was all changed and all the Claude Gordon footnotes and annotations eliminated and replaced with sparse comments. I have the entire book sort of memorized so I instantly what page everything is on. Saint-Jacome is just as essential as Arban.
