    Philip Smith gave this clinic at the University of Southern California in the early 1990s. Zita Carno was the piano accompanist, who played the Hindemith Trumpet Sonata from memory in an impromptu performance.

    Phil is a world class player and an even better man! A devout Christian who lives his faith through kindness and humility.

    I have never seen a pianist give such an erudite comment in a master class. Phil's tone is incredible!

      You should look her up. Zita Carnow. She was the pianist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a very long time and accompanied Tommy Stevens on the one of the best recordings of the Hindemith Trumpet Sonata. Notice she played that from MEMORY. Phil Smith didn't know just who he was dealing with. She was awesome and the piano part for the Hindemith is WAY more of a challenge than the trumpet part.

      Thank you for posting this Jeff. I am surprised at how many solos and classes that I have done appear on TH-cam! To be clear, I absolutely knew who Zita was and had great respect for her! Anyone who listened, as I did, to the wonderful recordings of Tom Stevens would realize what a terrific team they were. I was amazed at how she could play the Hindemith. While I never performed this piece live, I am thrilled that this impromptu performance of the first movement exists!!

      Very cool to have you respond to this. I had the video in a camcorder for so long and paid to have someone transfer it because I didn’t even own a camcorder. I’m glad it was saved. I think I have some video of your performance at the Ambassador Auditorium that night. I wish I would have had a tripod. You played great as usual and it was a very fun thing to witness.

    Phil is an amazing musician and I hold him in the highest esteem both as a world class player and as a human being. He has been a friend for years and I can tell you that it is thrilling to see him play and give this Master Class.

    In my opinion, Phil has the most engaging trumpet sound, ever. I also think he is the greatest orchestral trumpeter, ever. I know listening to music is subjective, but no one sounds like him as a principal trumpeter.

    I know the “correct” answer is Bud Herseth but when I’m asked I always say that Phil Smith is my all-time favorite orchestral trumpeter. The sweetness of his sound along with the breadth of colors he’s able to achieve set him apart in my mind as the greatest to ever do it.

    It's interesting to hear him talk about that muscle tick he had as a kid around 1:53:00 and it being on that left side of his face. And now knowing how he went through focal distonia and that left corner starting to leak air before he was diagnosed. I wonder if that is connected in someway.

      That's Napoli by Herman Belstedt. You should hear the recording of Del Staigers do that. The Staigers recording is in a couple of the final lectures on my website with the Claude Gordon Camps. Listen to the recordings found on this page. You have to create a free account and login to hear them. www.purtle.com/claude-gordon-archives

    Phil Smith is wonderful but I do not Understand why trumpet players keep playing Tomassi - it is a very bad piece of music -

    • @Rskou

      I guess for the same reason people keep keeping up with the kardashians - It's just something we do.

      Perhaps they don't think it's 'bad' but in fact actually like the piece? Objectively, Tomasi was quite a fine composer and his music continues to be performed regularly.

      @MightyBrightyMoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if you heard it played musically with the original style whether you’d think of the piece differently. Unfortunately, most performances of it (like this one) are dry and technical based :/
