“Kid, when you play the trumpet, people are always going to be telling you you’re sharp, and you’re too loud. Fuck ‘em.” - Mel Broiles, in a lesson with my teacher Mack Guderian

One of the biggest piccolo trumpet sounds I’ve ever heard! He’s an incredible musician.

Fullest, most gorgeous Flugel sound I've ever heard. Great video. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for introducing me to Mel's stellar playing. As a non-brass player, I find Mel's ability to tell a story within every note absolutely inspiring.

A brilliant player in every sense. And sounding this good on a not very good piccolo trumpet? WOW. His vibrato on the last high note of every piece sounded like a great violinist.

I sure hope this video (or your full masterclass version . . . or both) will also become repositories of the dozens of "Mel stories" that his colleagues, friends and students have been sharing and trading over the years. He was legendary in many ways!

In the process of editing the full masterclass together. I also plan to do a Mel stories video at some point.

I studied trumpet in college and got my degree in it. Now, I am a programmer. Watching this makes me itchy to get back into it!

There’s so little of him on here that I knew I had to put this together. Planning to upload the full masterclass at some point. If you want to make a video about this, be my guest abs go right ahead if you wish.

@@TimothyMoke J Landress brass has one of Mel’s pieces. A custom Bach 1. The mouthpiece he used on that geyser picc was a jet tone severinsen model.

Awesome! I took a lesson with Mel around 1981 in Minneapolis when the Met was touring. He gave me a lot of "alternate" fingering suggestions to make the music flow better.

Old videos such as this always seem to be a bit out of tune-mainly sharp. Is that due to the recording quality of the video?
