This video was a nightmare to make. RDR2 constantly crashing, my capture card randomly stopped working half way through then decided to work again, Premiere being its usual broken mess... hope it was worth it! If you missed part 1, it's here: th-cam.com/video/385eG1IEZMU/w-d-xo.html

  • @VickiVampiressYT

A small correction about the fur quality at 13:18: You mention "sample count" and "strands". All the hair and fur in the game is shell based, meaning it consists of many little individual planes or "shells" distributed across creature models. This includes fur hats, coats and birds (but with feathers). There are no spline based strands or clumps being simulated, unlike with middleware solutions like TressFX or Hairworks, so there is no sample count to speak of.
This is also why it does not affect performance. Geometry is cheap to render these days and all the fur setting does is reduce the number of shells distributed on creatures, meaning fewer individual polygons to be drawn. Performance gain of this is marginal but does make fur a lot less dense. Turning it down will also reduce overdraw (a performance issue caused by too many transparent surfaces drawn on top of each other), but this is all accounted for by 3D and shader artists who optimize their models and shaders for exactly this issue.
Not something most people will care about - but being a 3D artist, I do. There are enough misconceptions about game development as is, especially when it comes to scalable settings and "optimization".

    • @VickiVampiressYT
      @VickiVampiressYT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Also, in case you are asking yourself "But how does the fur blow in the wind?": Vertex color and vertex deformation. Super cheap to calculate and render. Rockstar also uses SpeedTree for all their foliage, which features its own wind solution that's also applied to fur and cloth shaders. It's also why wind looks so realistic. The Witcher 3 uses SpeedTree as well.
Funnily enough, Parallax Occlusion and Tessellation are techniques where vertex color and deformation are applied as well, after subdividing the geometry. Same concept, different application.
Don't be fooled though! These are all techniques that we (3D artists) have been using in games for like 10 or 15 years. We're not quite at the point where these things can be efficiently simulated in games. Almost, but not quite!
Chances are whenever you see nice fluffy fur, dense stacks of hay, detailed leaves, or any other such effect in a game, 99.9% of the time it's one of many tricks in the book of magic that is game art. Most of it is smoke and mirrors really. It still is 15 years later!

    1. raymarch res is a fps tanker if you keep your volumetric lower than ultra! keep OFF for huge fps improvements. Went from 85fps to 45 at 1440p
    2. far volumetric affects clouds massively, and on low the clouds are super pixelated and shimmery
    3. reflection MSAA is for Mirrors, not the cubemap style reflections
    4. Trees flicker and bug out on anything but Ultra for me

Far volumetric resolution have a big impact when at the right place on the map. For example, when you're high up in the snowy mountains in chapter 1, your fps can drop by 15 at ultra in some instances! In the second mission when you get off the horse with your shotgun is a good example of that. So turn that setting to high instead.

These videos you guys do going through each setting like this seeing the visual and performance difference is incredibly helpful for people like myself on aging hardware trying to figure out how to adjust the settings and experience the game as it was intended to. I am on an overclocked 980ti still playing on 1080p and managed to get a playable 60fps and the game looks absolutely amazing with the settings you suggested. I just want to thank you and your team for taking the time to do these kinds of tests, they really allow those of us on older hardware to experience demanding games with ease. You're helping people like myself breathe new life into older hardware. If it wasn't for these videos I would have just assumed my hardware was in need of an upgrade and would have spent thousands on an upgrade to just set and forget. Totally worth the time sitting through each setting to get the desired result.

Any time Rockstar releases a game, it technically destroys most games. I'm able to play this game at a locked 4K30 at medium settings with some high and ultra. That isn't bad for this kind of game.

I noticed that you had the DX12 tree glitch happening in a lot of your test footage. When the game released, Vulkan hardly worked for me and I had to use DX12 but I found that glitch to be so distracting and immersion-breaking that I decided to wait for a patch before attempting to play again. Thankfully patches and a different CPU made Vulkan perform much better than it had been.

I chose to take the performance hit with lighting set to Ultra. The game just looks so good with ultra lighting especially at night time. It only really takes a huge hit in Saint Denis in particular but everywhere else can still get around 55-60fps which is good enough for a slow paced game like this. I also went with ultra settings on particle lighting quality as there is some pretty nice effects when near campfires or lamps. He did mention almost no performance hit with it too so I just decided to keep it on ultra. I also turned off relection MSAA as there were certain scenarios where framerate would suffer and I didn't really care for MSAA on reflections. The rest I copied from the guide. I average around 60-70fps with a minimum of about 45fps in Saint Denis at night when facing a busy street with all the lights from lamps and buildings on. I play on ultrawide 3440x1440 which is actually a pretty significant performance difference from standard 2560x1440, it's pretty close to 4K in terms of pixel density. G-SYNC also helps a lot in keeping the game smooth even in the 50-60fps range. Thankfully I did not encounter any stuttering issues but I did turn Async on from the get go so that might be the reason. I am also playing in Vulcan but didn't try DX12.

I dont think the issue is that the game is unoptimized. I think it’s just that medium settings doesn’t mean what it usually means in other games. Medium settings here could easily be called high .
People just feel like it ha poor optimization because they can’t run it at the setting they are used to :)

I havent had it drop below 30 even at populated areas

Hi, I know this is quite an old video but I was wondering if you'd be keen on the idea of revisiting the HUB optimization. The port seems to be much more optimized, on a 5700xt using the ultra preset I was achieving decent FPS/no perceptible issues about 50% of the time, granted I was not monitoring in most instances. I did notice large drops at night and in certain areas with lighting and daytime instances such as entering towns but generally, the FPS seemed to regulate once in town. With AMD's driver optimization greatly improved from last year (Nvidia's as well I'd assume), the PC port optimizations, and the recent release of RDR2 Online for an extended sales period at 5$ I've noticed a large influx of players that will continue to grow. I think the community would greatly benefit from revisiting the max performance and minor cost to fidelity goal you so often achieve. I know this testing takes a lot of time but would love to see similar videos for games with bad PC ports on launch and cards with poorly optimized drivers on launch (5700xt) revisited more often. Watch Dogs: Legion is another that comes to mind. Maybe consider hiring someone specifically for this purpose who could also help with creating/formatting all those time consuming blue bar graphs (a reference to recent Q&A).
Thanks for all your hard work and keep up the top tier content that you create. Shout out from the States to one of my favorite and most trusted reviewers and content creators.
