For those with higher end GPU's with extra VRAM, HalkHogan has an HD Reworked mod with improved textures. He's the same modder who did the HD Reworked project for Witcher 3 that was integrated officially into the Witcher 3 Next-Gen update. It makes a big improvement to many of the in game textures with little to no performance impact if you have the VRAM. He's also updating it and expanding it to the new 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty soon. Well worth checking out!

@@mathias4514 there are 2 versions of the 1.0 version of the mod currently. A quality version which uses about an extra 800MB VRAM and a balanced version that uses about an extra 400MB. I want to add some notes to a few features:
Colour Precision for banding: Would be better to compare the sky during dawn and dusk times where there's a bigger variety in gradients.
RT Sun Shadows: FAR better on the presentation of distant and long range shadows such as buildings where the cascade shadow maps would normally lose resolution and clarity. Accuracy of shadows on thin objects such as the tree leaves themselves vs the shadows on the ground or close-range and smaller objects like a fire escape, windowsills, the smaller debris like rebar rods in your second example, or those sandbags you used for Contact Shadows demonstration.
RT Local shadows: "Worse" shadows visually perhaps, but they are accurate to shadow diffusion for the long tube lights of the bar.
RT Lighting: Medium enables Sky lighting + RT Ambient Occlusion and some smaller objects like Neon signs. Ultra enables additional and larger sign types like advertisements. Psycho adds an indirect bounce to sunlight. Most things look different as we're used to the physically incorrect SSAO type of shading that only considers distance between objects and not the world as a whole, giving a more contrasted or shaped look to the shading. These settings aren't quality options, so much as features being turned on.

Have you seen any difference with Color Precision? From my testing, RT Local Shadows is alot lighter on the CPU compared to the other RT settings, so I've stuck with them on my rig. I'm currently using mods to stretch out the shadow cascades so they don't loose clarity as quickly, RT Sun Shadows are still better of course but I'm happy enough with them.

16:51 I think the blurred shadow is because the light source is effectively a long strip. Larger light sources create blurrier shadows as they only shade some of the light. You can see this IRL if you make shadows with a similarly shaped light source.

I thinks it is true. In my experience most graphics settings (like shadows, AO and reflections) simply do not work at all, while you are using either path tracing or ray tracing. So there is no way to improve performance aside from changing RT settings quality. While in PT mode the only way to improve GPU performance is to use an unofficial mode, that reduces light bounces down to 1 (the game still looks gorgeous though and performs quite a bit better).

A note about RT overdrive is that it can make the game darker in many areas. It also seems to overly smooth some elements (this could be a DLSS thing as well). Since it requires DLSS, the ghosting can be apparent and distracting. In many ways, the game looks better without DLSS (or any upscaling) at RT High or Ultra. I have a hard time justifying the smudging of upscaling technology relative to the added features. Lastly, the biggest hit to visual quality in my opinion was HDR mode vs not using HDR. So I would tell people that you may get a better gaming experience-regardless of the game-by getting an HDR monitor than having a non-HDR screen and turning the settings up.

Really appreciate the guide, but I must confess I was very dissapointed by the path tracing section - as a 4070 Ti owner playing at 1440p, I really DO want to optimize a little while still using path tracing and the new DLSS 3.5 RR feature... It would have been nice to have a path tracing section to clarify which settings become irrelevant, which still have significant performance impacts, etc. Even for those with a 4090, some optimization is still required (at least upscaling), so I think it would be useful to have covered some basic optimizations for 4070 Ti, 4080, and 4090 owners who are using path tracing. Maybe in a future video? Cheers.

      @Scorpius165 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello, I am on a RTX 4080 so my experience will be slightly different but not by much. I can offer some insights, that will, hopefully, be useful.
Baseline: I am getting around 150 fps with no RT at all, and around 60, or slightly less than 60 fps, with path tracing on. Resolution is 1440p + DLSS Quality + RR. No frame gen.
What I've learned so far: Ray Reconstruction gives you non-trivial performance back, even though it does introduce some ghosting artifacts that can be quite noticeable from time to time. However, the AI denoiser also gives you like 10% perf at least, so, it's a no-brainer even on 4080. Frame generation almost doubles the visual fps with no degradation to quality that I could see, so, all of these features should be on if you are on a 4070Ti and want to do path tracing.
You should aim to have at least 50-55 fps without FG in the benchmark to get you to enjoyable experience, because framegen will take that and almost double it but it will keep the original input lag (also, Dogtown is more demanding than the benchmark). To get there, if necessary, I would personally not sting away from using DLSS Balanced. Yes, it will look slightly worse than Quality at 1440p target resolution, but the most amount of shimmering and instability comes from the ray tracing itself at that low of an input res - and RR takes care of that (mostly). At least to me, Balanced with RR on still looks pretty good in 1440p, and it will give you that extra performance you might need.
I would honestly not touch any of the raster setting because if we are talking PT here, it will probably not matter anyway (pending research, of course).

Thanks, that’s quite helpful. I’ve been running with all the things on (frame gen, path tracing, and DLSS quality). So far it’s pretty smooth visually. 1% lows stay above 60fps. The RR artifacts don’t bother me too much. Game does feel a little “laggy”, but I’m not sure if that’s just from my sensitivity settings or input lag. Haven’t played the game in a long while. I’ll try out DLSS performance and see if it’s a good trade-off.

Agreed, ignoring path tracing mode, RT reflections are the feature that adds most to the game given the sheer amount of reflective surfaces in the game, and nature of SSR fakery (disappearing reflections when objects move out of camera view, etc.).
Imho it is worth even sacrificing some raster settings to get RT reflections.

With Performance Optimized settings at 1440p DLSS Quality I averaged ~100 FPS on my 9700K + RTX 3060 build, but with dips down to the ~75 on occasion I opted to just cap my FPS at 70 and have had an almost completely "locked" 70 FPS experience. It looks and feels great!
I tried doing some light RT and could manage FPS in the low 60's on average, but there were occasional drops to 50 or even below in really busy areas and, while I can certainly handle that (it's basically the experience I've been having with Starfield), I'd much rather have a no-less-than 60 FPS experience consistent.
Thanks for making this process much easier for me, HUB! 😁

Awesome video as an XTX owner I salute you. Volumetric fog is a fps killer in a lot of games one I'm really familiar with is Monster Hunter World on PC, it has it and it might be the most demanding setting in that game outside of HD texture pack that many people are oblivious to and I honestly couldn't see an appreciable difference between "highest" and "low" fog in that game even when squinting and straining, though turning it completely off does look different and to be fair I was standing completely still when comparing which I learned through this video may make more difference while moving. Then again are you worrying about how fog looks in the middle of fighting a giant dragon in that game? Nah. Just going down to Medium or Low makes that game so much more accessible on the performance side while sacrificing little in terms of image quality and even high end systems appreciate this boost as it could take them from just above playable to truly fast and smooth.

I think the most interesting discovery is that low RT reflections perform and look better than even the highest rasterized setting, really showing ray tracing is not just an fps swallowing black hole, but can really lift games' visuals up without needing ridiculous amounts of performance.
And also like always, don't play on ultra. The simplest way to optimize your game if you need a bit more performance is to first turn down the quality preset to high, then also enable DLSS on it's quality mode if you still need a bump. If that's still not enough, then comparisons like this come in.
