It is indeed good to see the voice of reason in Stephen Smith who realises that freedom is needed for everyone and is willing to defend that freedom for people he does not agree with him. If he ever needs support because he cannot exercise his belief for himself, we as Atheists should support Stephen Smith.

Last time I checked, being an atheist is a choice. Being black is not. You can wake up & decide to not be an atheist, you can’t wake up & not be black anymore.
There weren’t in any signs in America that said “No Atheist Allowed” or “Atheist Only”.
Unless you openly come out & say you are an atheist, no one knows what you believe in.
Whenever a black persons steps outside, we know they are black. Can’t compare what blacks went through to what Atheist go through.

Atheist are atheist because certain circumstances compells them to draw their conclusion that an existence of a god cannot be objectively veirfied amd even there is verification of a god which god are we referring to. In my case, i my atheistic postion came as a result of simply being intellectually honest with myself and the god that i believed in. I DON'T WANT THE ATHEISTS INFRINGING UPON MY RIGHTS! As long as we have teacher-led prayer during class time, 10 commandment monuments in courtrooms, 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance even though it wasn't there originally and added later, 'In God We Trust' on money even though it wasn't there originally just like the Pledge, and tax-exempt status for organizations that don't have to release their expenditures the way that non-profit organizations like hospitals have to, we're cool, right?
What's that atheists? You don't care if people pray in school as long as it isn't teacher/official led and thereby using public tax money to push a particular belief? You don't want the 10 commandments in courtrooms because they're clearly not the law and for some reason omit awful crimes like rape? You want 'under God' taken out of the Pledge and 'In God We Trust' taken off of money because it only serves to marginalize the atheist/agnostic/polytheist/etc population? You think a church needs to be held accountable for its income and expenses the same way that all other nonreligious 501c3 organizations are?

Quotes from Thomas Paine - Founding Father of the Constitution:
"Take away from Genesis the belief that Moses was the author, on which only the strange believe that it is the word of God has stood, and there remains nothing of Genesis but an anonymous book of stories, fables, and traditionary or invented absurdities, or of downright lies. [ The Age of Reason]"
"There are matters in the Bible, said to be done by the express commandment of God, that are shocking to humanity and to every idea we have of moral justice . . . [Complete Writings]"
"It is far better that we admitted a thousand devils to roam at large than that we permitted one such impostor and monster as Moses, Joshua, Samuel, and the Bible prophets, to come with the pretended word of God and have credit among us. [The Age of Reason]"
"What is it the Bible teaches us?--raping, cruelty, and murder. What is it the New Testament teaches us?--to believe that the Almighty committed debauchery with a woman engaged to be married, and the belief of this debauchery is called faith.
As to the book called the Bible, it is blasphemy to call it the Word of God. It is a book of lies and contradictions, and a history of bad times and bad men. There are but a few good characters in the whole book. [Thomas Paine, Letter to William Duane, April 23, 1806]"
All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit. [The Age of Reason]"
"Persecution is not an original feature in any religion, but it is always the strongly marked feature of all religions established by law. [The Age of Reason]"
"Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory to itself than this thing called Christianity. Too absurd for belief, too impossible to convince, and too inconsistent for practice, it renders the heart torpid or produces only atheists or fanatics. As an engine of power, it serves the purpose of despotism, and as a means of wealth, the avarice of priests, but so far as respects the good of man in general it leads to nothing here or hereafter. [The Age of Reason]"
"The most detestable wickedness, the most horrid cruelties, and the greatest miseries that have afflicted the human race have had their origin in this thing called revelation, or revealed religion. It has been the most destructive to the peace of man since man began to exist. Among the most detestable villains in history, you could not find one worse than Moses, who gave an order to butcher the boys, to massacre the mothers and then rape the daughters. One of the most horrible atrocities found in the literature of any nation. I would not dishonor my Creator's name by attaching it to this filthy book. [The Age of Reason]"
"My country is the world, and my religion is to do good.
Whence arose all the horrid assassinations of whole nations of men, women, and infants, with which the Bible is filled; and the bloody persecutions, and tortures unto death, and religious wars, that since that time have laid Europe in blood and ashes; whence arose they, but from this impious thing called religion, and this monstrous belief that God has spoken to man? [Thomas Paine quoted in 2000 Years of Disbelief, Famous People with the Courage to Doubt by James Haught]"
"The story of the redemption will not stand examination. That man should redeem himself from the sin of eating an apple by committing a murder on Jesus Christ, is the strangest system of religion ever set up."
"Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst; every other species of tyranny is limited to the world we live in, but this attempts to stride beyond the grave, and seeks to pursue us into eternity."
Quotes on religion by Thomas Jefferson:
"Of publishing a book on religion, my dear sir, I never had an idea. I should as soon think of writing for the reformation of Bedlam, as of the world of religious sects. Of these there must be, at least, ten thousand, every individual of every one of which believes all wrong but his own." Thomas Jefferson
"Compulsion in religion is distinguished peculiarly from compulsion in every other thing. I may grow rich by art I am compelled to follow, I may recover health by medicines I am compelled to take against my own judgment, but I cannot be saved by a worship I disbelieve & abhor." Thomas Jefferson
"Religion is a subject on which I have ever been most scrupulously reserved. I have considered it as a matter between every man and his Maker in which no other, and far less the public, had a right to intermeddle."
"But a short time elapsed after the death of the great reformer of the Jewish religion, before his principles were departed from by those who professed to be his special servants, and perverted into an engine for enslaving mankind, and aggrandizing their oppressors in Church and State."
"Your reason is now mature enough to examine this object [religion]. In the first place divest yourself of all bias in favour of novelty & singularity of opinion. Indulge them in any other subject rather than that of religion. It is too important, & the consequences of error may be too serious. On the other hand shake off all the fears & servile prejudices under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must more approve the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.
      "
      ...you were saying???
@John Love, You need to read more.
The Founding Fathers were intellectuals and several were atheists (and deists at most - not Christians). It's always hilarious to the atheist community that the religious community likes to claim the intellectual, non-Christian and blaspheming Founding Fathers as their own. ;)

Of course you can pray in school all you want, but public schools are not allowed to have a public display of religion because it is contrary to other religions. If it had been a Muslim prayer that people wanted in schools, these people would be like, Oh, that's not fair to impose that religion on children, but if it's their own religion their okay with it.
Also, the phrase "under God" SHOULD be removed from the pledge of allegiance because even though this country has been heavily influenced by Christianity, it was built on religious freedom and the pledge of allegiance stands for our country and it's beliefs, which include nondiscrimination against religions.

We don't do that because this is a free country and every one is to be created equal.

I dismiss the existence of god(s). It's not a belief.
"What can be asserted without evidence, can also be dismissed without evidence!"
    - Chris Hitchens
I do not believe in the Big Bang Theory. I accept it as true based on the evidence.
    "what started it?"
I don't know and neither do you.
    "doesn't that contradict atheism itself?"
No! Only proof of god could do that.

  • @rogermetzger7335

It’s time to move beyond “tolerance” to equal standing for every adult citizen--equal standing in society, equal standing in the political arena and equal standing under the law--equal standing for Christians, equal standing for Muslims, equal standing for Hindus, equal standing for people whose religion is personal (not creedal) and, yes, equal standing for people who have rejected any or all of the many caricatures of “God” that masquerade as “THE truth”.
A good first step in that direction would be to specify that any discussion of this topic should be in the context of agreement that we will use the words, “morals” and “morality” to refer to principles provided by a deity and use the word, “ethics”, to refer to principles developed by a culture or subculture (“medical ethics” for example).
Many if not most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and other educated Americans of European heritage in the eighteenth century were influenced by books by David Hume, Voltaire and Thomas Paine. Such men were not opposed to the idea that a supreme being had created the universe under laws of cause and effect (“nature and nature’s God”). They believed such principles included kindness, honesty and diligence in business and maybe even cleanliness but life after death was regarded as superstitious. Several such men wrote that such things as miracles, forgiveness and resurrection would require that the creator act contrary to his own “natural” laws and they didn’t believe that was possible.
I don’t agree with those men’s philosophy but it did produce a system of government that they intended would provide EVERYONE with the best opportunity for liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If there are such people in our society today, let’s work for equal standing for THEM too.

What these people miss is that most Atheists come from religious homes. I was raised in a religious family and we went to church every sunday. I attended a religious based school. I know the bible better than most christians. Between the ages of 12-13, I realized that the whole christian god myth did not make any sense. When I was 14, I learnt what the word "resuscitate" meant (i.e. revive someone from apparent death) and realized that Jesus was like resuscitated (i.e. like my uncle was) and not resurrected. By the time I was 15, I had learnt enough roman history to know two things... 1. that the Romans killed Jesus (crucifixion is a roman form of execution) and 2. that when the church became the Roman State religion is when the Jews were blamed for the death of Jesus and is when the church became anti-Semitic. By the time I was 16, I had learnt enough European History to know that the church and all churches were political players, supporters of wars, supporters of the wealthy over the poor, supporters of slavery, and essentially amoral money making businesses which paid no taxes... that I understood that all christian churches were corrupt and greedy and used fear to keep milking their duped flocks. By the time I was 17, I discovered cosmology, physics, psychology, the enlightenment thinkers, humanism and understood that the US was based on the enlightenment and humanism and was created to keep the insanity which religion can cause out of our government. When I was 18, I understood that we all have larger questions of why we are, what is our purpose, what does all of creation mean. When I was 19, I understood that part of being human means being in awe the universe nakedly... and not pretending that answers can be found in a book written by many men and complied for a king. By the time I was 20, I learnt to be tolerant of the inane behavior of believers and began to understand that while growing old was mandatory, growing up was optional. I chose to be a grown up.... but many people, like the people in this video, are just getting old.

So, let me get this right:
A discussion programme discussing whether Christians discriminate against atheists : without getting an actual atheist on to put forward their views on this?
Would a programme be able to discuss whether women are ever discriminated against with 4 men who all believe they don't confirming their own bias, or 4 white racists discussing racism without any other ethnically diverse people being involved?
    This is in America, right?

I have my own opinions and thoughts as well as you do. If you've ever heard of something called a debate then you'd understand why I lash out at others who don't feel the same way as I do. I feel the need to let others know how I feel about a certain issue and if they counter that then I do the same. It's also called sharing opinions, or in some cases facts. I have the freedom of speech at my disposal and I'm not going to back down on something I feel strongly about.

Here's a way to settle prayer in school:
Let's take two classes and a book. One class will read the book and the other will pray for knowledge of what's in the book. Both classes will then take a test on what's in the book. The class that scores better settles the prayer debate.
