People complaining about it not having a GTX 1080 aren't who this is made for in the first place. So are those complaining about the price tag.
Or maybe this might had been in development for a long time and adding the newer gfx cards would delayed the launch.
that's total horse nuggets. Creatives into graphics, photography, video editing and so on and so on are the target market and GPU use absolutely a big deal in every one of those kinds of apps.
What you really need to see is someone working on this and someone working on a really nice desktop PC with high end GPU. It'll be cheaper and smoke the Surface.
This whole computer is style over substance. It's trying to capture the market that buy Apple stuff because Apple stuff looks beautiful and they just suck it up when it comes to limitations.
Why doesn't it have a 1060 or 1070? Both outperform the 980m (and are probably cheaper) and many laptops have come out with them for the last month.

its because the focus is not on making the best computer they can. It's on making the thinnest, smallest footprint computer they can that can go toe to toe with Apple hardware. Any limitations are just tough. You can't have a full on GPU because the box is too small to get rid of that much heat or perhaps the price of the better GPU just didn't fit cost wise but the metal finish sure got its part of the budget.
TheDx917 errr bro the 1000 series used for laptops are almost as good as their desktop counterparts would cost less. As they said a 1060 would outperform a 980M.

this is an amazing pc, especially for artist/graphic designers.
With that demo is already dropping sometimes over $2,000 on a Cintiq tablet, this is a really smart move from Microsoft
Well to be even close to this AT ALL, you'd need the most expensive Cintiq (24qhd, and even then, the resolution is garbage compared to this), plus you'd need a high end desktop with a Quadro to even use it properly (10 bit colour).
Except a cintiq runs any operating system so you are not stuck with the idiotic Windows OS. This gadget is like a Ferrari with an interior made from old dish rags.
Bee Cee The highest end Cintiq has a 10 bit panel, which requires a Quadro or FirePro card to take advantage of. Make you should actually make sure you understand what I said before replying.
What about an RX 480 or two?

People are missing the point of this product, yes it is pricey but it's not made for a gamer or average users. It's made for content creators, artists, graphic designers, motion graphics designers, animators, etc. Now one could argue that the specs aren't justifiable for the price, that may be the case but it is still powerful. The main reason it's expensive is because of that display. It's not your average display, this things latency timing is fucking amazing, the screens is 4.5K and not only that, it's super clear and colour corrected.
I personally think this is a fantastic product, pricey, yes, but it definitely fulfills its objective & I definitely plan on buying this sometime in the future.

This isn't for your typical consumer. It's much more focused on designers than anything else. You can't draw on a 4k standalone monitor.

Yeah that works out well unless you actually have to draw on it. If you have to draw on your screen then you would need to either get this or a $2500 tablet + a pc. So it really isn't overpriced.

What amazes me the most is the 980m in such a small PC.
There's a desktop that fits 2 1080's in about 12" x 12" x 4", whereas this one is about 10" x 9" x 1 1/4".

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, you're basing that on the monitor itself (which is superbly thin) like any other Surface product, but all of the internals are in that base on the bottom.

Cintiq 27 Touch $2800 + Desktop PC $800 already makes $3600 and you lose one inch in screen, 4K resolution, hinge mechanism, the dial, small form factor. It's not overpriced at all and Apple doesn't have anything like this available.

I really like the design. A Very minimalist approach to the design and the specs on it is pretty damn good too with that display. Definitely something to look forward to for my illustrations and it reminds me of the 27" cintiq

The Surface Studio is much better considering it has a touch screen along with some really great accessories, it runs windows, it is able to game really well. Plus considering it has a 6th generation Intel i7 processor and a dedicated GPU, you can use some of the really hard-to-run photo or video editing programs with ease.
That and this runs windows and if I read correctly, is not limited to just thunderbolt connectors only

I dont know why Microsoft is aiming at artists and trying to pitch this beautiful AIO as a tool for artists. I mean other than the MS Dial, the rest is just a powerful touch screen computer that everyone can use. I am not an artist but as soon as I can afford, I will buy this computer because of its big screen, thin screen, gorgeous design and awesomeness.
It is a shame for all these OEM's for not being able to design and build beautiful hardware like this and their only job is to make hardware.

I think those devices aren't really comparable. It's like comparing a late-2016 car with the a early 2015 version. When Apple launches a touchscreen iMac, then we can compare. For now, if you want a desktop touchscreen you cannot even consider an iMac.

Anyone who's complaining about this not having a GTX 1080 or a 'high-end' graphics card isn't an idiot. This machine isn't for gaming - let me make that clear. Not every piece of technology existent in the 21st century needs to revolve around gamers. If you're not educated enough to understand that than this product isn't for you, and in my opinion, the price is worth it for a high-quality computer. Although it's considerably more than the iMac which has a 5K display, the resolution isn't what interests me, but it just makes this computer look that much more beautiful. The iMac doesn't have the processing power that this machine has, and I would gladly buy it knowing the product would get plenty of use for animation, design, and editing purposes. I even dare to say that this computer is good for personal use, even if you don't plan on using the touch-screen. The only thing that turns me off is that you can't upgrade it effectively. As time goes on, new hardware will become the new standard and old hardware will become dated. By then Microsoft will have surely released a 'Surface Studio 2' and you'll need to spend another four-grand to stay with the times. That's why I prefer to stick with my old-fashioned tower computer - knowing that I won't have to buy a completely new computer in three years.

Abhishek Chaudhary It's densely compacted so that each slot perfectly fits the dimensions of the pre-built component going into it. You can't replace a 960M with a 1080 because the ladder is a much bigger graphics card.
This machine is absollutely perfect for any kind of work.
But Microsoft users are gaming-HW implementation oriented.
If there is no such of thing it goes around crApple hw/sw politics, like you can't touch nothing.

I personally do find it ridiculous that there's isn't an option for a high end dedicated video processor. 3D design would greatly benefit from one more powerful than the 9 series. I don't understand why it isn't an option, because it's not because they wouldn't be able to fit it in. a 10 series card would produce less heat, use less power, and give a considerable performance increase. It's just silly.

Why didnt Microsoft put a mobile full GTX 1060 in it, instead of a 980M? The cost would've probably been the same, but the difference of performance would be big.

The 980m is physically smaller than the 10 series MXM cards, so Microsoft was most likely physically limited because they got close to finishing this product before the mobile 10 series cards were announced.

Well that makes sense. But since the base model inludes only a 965m, couldn't MS have put it in the much higher priced model, especially since medium sized laptops like the MSI GS63VR have a 1060 with a small motherboard.
Making this thing just a liiiittle bit bigger is out of the question. Let's just nerf it.
The plans for this device were likely finalized before the 10 series mobile cards were even announced, and because they are just slightly larger Microsoft couldn't just drop them in as a replacement. I honestly have no clue why everyone is complaining about this, the 980m is by no means slow, and the price for this product is actually really good because of the display you get. It's not like it's meant for gaming, so there's no reason to HAVE to have the highest end GPU available in it.

This pc is amazing and getting all the accessories and that hardware optimization to get those components into that small form factor is great. I can't wait to see what other products Microsoft can turn out.

With that GPU? Not quite, even at 1080p. My laptop is running a 980m and I can do high-ultra settings, with some settings turned down to medium to maintain 60+ fps.

So ok, Apple comes up with a "new" Macbook Pro with MagSafe removed, USB, HDMI removed (offering I guess 4 USB-Cs instead, not sure about the number), STILL low-mid range specs and in the name of innovation they add in a touch bar, something kinda similar to what HP did way back. Now MSFT drops in with this, something actually innovative, ALMOST maxed out specs, and no unnecessary removal of useful features (MagSafe Apple, you fu*ked up there), AND PEOPLE STILL COMPLAIN ABOUT THE STUDIO BEING OVERPRICED. The Studio isn't that great, I get it, but is the MacPro better? Nope. And considering the market situation, $3000 is expensive sure, but not stupid. Seriously guys?
everyone who actually need and gonna buy something like studio think it is relatively cheap... only those who don't need studio think it is expensive because in their eye it is just an all in one pc with touch screen.
they ignore that most professionals grudgingly paid over 2k for cintiq and another 2k for eizo CG line monitor for their work for past few years.
and this thing do both for 3k.. and this one include a quite a powerful PC with it
Low-mid range? Are you talking about the 13 inch models, aren't you? The 15'' comes with true quad-core CPUs, including the highest-end Intel's mobile CPU option, and with decent discrete current generation video cards. One of those, the Radeon Pro 460, is as powerful as the Surface Studio's GTX 965M (which is really meaningful here, as we are comparing an ultraportable laptop to an all-in-one desktop), and comes with double the VRAM.
The major problems of the Surface Studio, however, are that 1. It uses, LITERALLY, outdated GPUs. NVidia has launched successors to both the 965M and the 980M within the same TDP range, but Microsoft instead decided to use 2-years old, 28nm class technology, instead of going for the 10-series. Also, NVidia non-Quadro GPUs have terrible performance in many professional applications, thanks to their inferior OpenGL support, so it would not surprise me if, in a bunch of tasks, the highest-end Macbook Pro actually performed better than the 980M SKU of the Surface Studio. And 2. C'mon, an US$ 4,199.00 PC without complete PCI-E SSD storage? Seriously?
The Macbook Pro wasn't perfect, and the Surface Studio has its own merits, but your analysis is completely biased. Seriously, "low-mid range", WTF. You simply can't put a much hardware than the 28W Intel Core SKUs with Iris Pro graphics on a 13 inch notebook. This is the highest-end you could get, and these components are really expensive.

Damn, I'm pretty sure you can build a pc with an i7 6700k/gtx 1080/16gb ram/256gb ssd and 2tb hdd along with a nice 4k monitor for lesss than what this thing costs, but it's still a pretty awesome piece of tech and it is definitely more innovative than any iMac Apple has released in recent years
This is marketed more towards designers, and for them the high resolution touch screen alone makes it worth the $3k price tag.

iMacs are made for work, not artist, apple created a way more convenient device for artists named iPad pro, which they can move however they want!

Video game designers might take advantage of this. if it makes their job easier and slightly speeds up their process than that's a good thing.

This is not a gaming pc. It's not supposed to be. It's not competing with personal builds. It's a really powerful and useful hardware mostly for professional use. This is a direct competitor to the imac. You can buy/build a "better" pc, but you won't get this pc. Save your "I can build a better pc with less money and...". We all know that. Shut up.
Microsoft really loves their fancy hinges. First they had the clicky hinge on the Surface Pro, then the bendy hinge on the Surface Book, and now they have a shiny hinge.
This thing is absolutely gorgeous. Not sure if this would be an actual alternative to getting a Wacom Cintiq, but it sure looks like it'd feel awesome to use.

simple. this product isn't for you... yet. in a couple of years once a few generations have been released the price will gradually get lower and lower. and since it's in the all in one form then I'd expect it to get cheaper pretty quick (if 3-5 years is quick)

my dad owns an all in one with nearly the same hinge design, the computer is like 5 years old. just to let everybody know that its been around for a while. on that note; it is very neat and i think its really cool they didnt throw the design away because it is ver functional
Oh my god, this looks absolutely amazing! Of course, I would probably not end up buying one of these ($3000 US- that is a lot) but it is still absolutely amazing, especially that dial. I hope they will also sell those dials individually, they look absolutely fantastic!

It doesn't need a Titan unless it's used for an animation studio like Pixar. All in all, the price is high because of the rest of its hardware and branding. You could build such a PC without this screen for 1,500 bucks.

EdgedGaming Apple doesn't have anything even similar to this so there's really no competition there. The only real competition they have is with the Wacom CIntiq 27QHD. Imo Wacom wins but I can easily see why someone would go with this over the Cintiq since they're pretty similar in price and this thing is a lot more elegant.

What I'd like to see is an attachment dock of some kind that allows you to hook up a desktop grade GPU for the Surface Studio, especially for those who'd want to use this for heavy video editing and 3D rendering.
All in all, the Studio looks very sleek right now. Dunno if it'll sway dedicated iMac users from switching over but it looks poised to do just that and more.

Do you not see the size of it? That little box on the bottom is the computer. And more than likely they couldn't put a 10 series MXM card in because they are physically larger than the 980m.

The 10 series MXM cards are physically larger than the 980m, meaning that it is impossible to fit one in. Microsoft most likely finalized the design of this machine before the 10 series mobile GPUs (or rather lack thereof) were announced.

I know Microsoft is marketing it as a new device because it can get more money and also diversify the product line up but imagine dial and mouse are actually similar in ergonomics and if they combine it altogether wouldnt it be a better experience overall? maybe also let the mouse's dial feature to be turned on at will or when placed on screen (since the screen is already touch-based so the mouse' tracking should be automatically turned off when detecting a digitizer screen)

i think the big problem is that even tho the Studio costs 3000 Dollars it has a 4k touchscreen a normal 4k screen has a retail price for 1k+.
KenGenHD It's a 4k PEN DISPLAY. Not a touch screen. Go look at wacom's site (www.wacom.com) and look at there 27` pen display that has a lower resolution and smaller sized screen. And come back to me and say that the price of the screen is too expensive.
