The reason Austin loves the 2013 Mac Pro is because when his apartment burnt down, a bunch of tech youtubers came together and gifted him one. It was a super heartwarming video and I recommend you watch it.
12:57, that's a spot on advice for buying an ipad. I bought a 2017 ipad pro 12.9 gen2 in 2019, I'm still using it today and it works great. Use it for notes, videos and browsing when a laptop isn't needed and if it weren't for the touch screen issues that came up recently, could easily get a few more years out of it.
@@CritScout152 yeah it's gone from 3-4 minute boot to 40ish seconds. Apps launch really quick now. Given that we've had it since 2013, it's nice to get a few more years out of it 👍
Almost every Apple product I've had has basically been a hand-me-down or purchased used -- 5 years old is kinda the sweet spot for price and longevity. You can usually squeeze a little more life out of them past that (Ex. OpenCore Legacy Patcher, older app support on iOS, etc) but before long you start needing/wanting more features and better performance.
I still use a 13" mid-2012 MBP, great lil machine. You can add up 16GB of RAM, as well as replace the disc drive with a 2nd SSD. Supports a 2nd display with a TB2 -> HDMI adapter.
I'm still pissed that not only has Apple discontinued the iPod touch but the most recent one won't even get iOS 16. That seems like adding insult to injury considering I think that versions only been out for about 2 to 3 years. I mean ouch.
it would be interesting to see if its possible to update these devices with another OS other than Apple OS so that they can actually be useful beyond what Apple thinks it should be.
I have a first gen Macbook Air that I put Pop O/S on after watching a recent LTT video, I can't remember why exactly, but its zippy AF now. I've also got a 2003(or 5) Macbook 2,1 too that I'm gonna probably put a different Linux flavour on just to learn more.
You can patch these with Ventura once its out just find the forums people are able to get these to install the latest os even when not supported. I have a 2013 imac that i patched Monterey on and it not officially supported by apple. Its runs it great!
I mean with macs you could always try linux and that would probably be more supported and faster than whatever the latest version of macos an outdated mac can use is BUT since apple silicon came out, linux still isn't an option for those. Asahi linux is being developed for them, but it's still not complete enough to be considered usable imo
Nope, that's where apple does the engraving. It most likely had a schools or company's info on it. The refurbisher then used an industrial laser cnc to etch the area removing it.
Also fair. I just know on my iPad it has the imei and “genuine apple product” which is technically illegal to sell due to some court crap awhile back if it goes through customs and says genuine apple product or has the logo it has to be royaltied or confiscated. But also referbs generally aren’t allowed within the apple care program despite how new the device may be.
The imac is upgradeable if you are brave enough to take the screen off. I've just changed out a hdd to ssd on a late 2012 iMac (same chassis) and it's night and day difference, and actually usable now!
I have a late 2015 iMac and to make it faster I'm booting macOS from an external solid-state drive. It's much faster now and easier than trying to open the iMac.
12:25. That was engraved with a fiber laser. We have the same laser Apple uses and engrave AirPods, AirTags, etc. We can also remove engraving on devices, and we just engrave away the aluminum and make a rectangle like that.
I love my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, which I upgraded with a 500 GB 870 EVO SSD and 16 GB of RAM. I kept it at Mojave so I can run 32-bit applications and games. I also love your enthusiasm for the 2013 Mac Pro, which I still desperately want to get.
Back when Austin's apartment burnt down back in 2014 with most of his tech and other belongings, a bunch of tech TH-camrs came together and bought him a 2013 Mac Pro. Super wholesome video if you get the chance, but I reckon that's one of the reasons why he likes the 2013 Mac Pro so much.
I love all the new features with the 14! I have an unboxing of my white iPhone 13 pro max over on my channel... I'll most likely upgrade next year and go with the black iPhone 😏
With an SSD, OpenCore Legacy Patcher is 100% worth it to get Monterey on the 2012 unibody. It has metal capable graphics so it will run perfectly fine!
I still have my original iPad Air, albeit it is no longer my main tablet. Pretty much the only thing that still works well is TH-cam. Something I would have been interested to see is all of the cheapest products purchased directly from Apple rather than Amazon, as with that you are getting products that will still be supported for hopefully a few years.
The iPad would have originally had an engraving on the back like you can get when you buy new from Apple. They etched out that rectangle as a way of “erasing” the engraving
that iPad Air is VERY likely a fleet iPad, aka, a school iPad. That white spot location lines up almost perfectly with the engraving that school districts put on those things. Those engravings were laser etched into the back for some reason so unless they swapped the shell, they weren’t getting it off.
It is incredibly frustrating to use an iOS or iPadOs device that is no longer supported because a lot of apps cannot be installed so I would steer clear of older iPads. For $209, you can get an Apple refurbished 7th Gen iPad. There are 2017 iPads for less than $130 on eBay.
It’s a bit better if you used a device around that time as you can reinstall older versions of apps if you previously had that version installed. I wish they start doing it like macOS doe it where if you download the latest version on a newer Mac you can download the latest compatible version on and older Mac. I’ve done it by downloading the latest apple productivity apps on my Mac Mini running Monterey and then I downloaded the older version on a Mac running Snow Leopard.
If you just slap an SSD in the iMac and use a patcher for the next MacOS versions, that thing still has years of use to offer. We don't seem to get such good deals in Europe
You can go cheaper for MacBook. I still use a 2010 white MacBook for some basic tasks to this very day and it was less than $100. (and shockingly, Google Chrome still fully supports High Sierra)
You can even update it to Mojave or Catalina(you CAN go Monterey, but it gets a little glitchy on non-metal supported cards) I have a 2010 13” MacBook Pro running Mojave. I use it as my go to machine why working on older computers as it’s light and decently quick. It has the max 2.66ghz Core 2 Duo and 8gb of ram. I got it for $135.
@@EvilTurkeySlices I had it on Catalina for a while, but it had issues. Then I tried Linux for a while, but ended up back on High Sierra. Just for the fun of it, I maxed the RAM to 16GB (which is weird as it now has more than my MacBook Air and my M1 Mac Mini)
used iphones. got a first gen SE for free (8gb) to replace my bent 128gb model housing, bought a 5s for 50 bucks, used to get regular 5's a few years ago for next to no money. so yes. Apple and Cheap does go in one sentence. Hell, back when the SE first came out, people literally were throwing 4's after you. Oh and yeah, they all still do work in fact, none of those were icloud locked either.
In defense of the iPad, it makes sense for someone getting in for a kid. They’ll use it for basically just TH-cam and it won’t matter when they drop it and it breaks compared to a $300 current gen
The skin was so funny, I used to sell 2010 unibody MacBooks and spent good time re-finishing the lids, then while searching for donors or candidates I'd see those big seller listings with just a ton of pre-applied skin options XD
I personally don’t mind if the lid is scratched or dented a bit, as long as it works and as long as the seller makes sure to note the damage in the listing.
I, actually still running a late 2012 Macbook Pro 15 inch. Upgraded to an ssd and increased the RAM to 8gb. Yes it no longer gets OS updates, but it still runs really well. Can't actually afford to build a new PC.
It’s probably a mid-2012. There is no late 2012 non retina. Regardless of semantics though the mid-2012 15” is the best MacBook Pro ever made. I have a 2.3ghz model for my main laptop. It does pretty much all I need on the go, even light gaming under Windows.
