    My go to hunting gear for British Columbia. You never what kind of weather you’ll get and this checks off all the boxes.

    This is a great jacket. The fit is amazing and very comfortable. The material stands up to weather of all kinds. At first use I was confused about how to use this jacket. I tried a few insulation layers under it, and that is not how it is designed to be used. This jacket can accommodate a few layers of merino or peleton, and does very well with a super down Ultra VEST under it. So that’s all that should go under it. When the hiking is done and its time to sit and glass, or wait for the thermals to shift, put on a super down Pro over it. What??? Down over a jacket listed as an outer layer? Yes. That’s what confused me at first. Check out Kuiu’s layering guide to learn more. I can attest that putting a Pro down jacket over the Axis when you’ve got a few merinos and a down vest under, and you’re gonna be warm like a furnace.
    Awesome gear! A fantastic part of a whole system that will get you into the backcountry or keep you in a tree stand no matter what the weather turns out to be.
    One suggestion for marketing. Make it clear that full puffy jackets do not go under this item, but a vest will very well, and that a pro jackets goes over it. I think that would better demonstrate what an excellent jacket the Axis is.

    I hunt Minnesota in November, usually I sit on stand a few hours in the morning then push through swamps and thick brush until afternoon which consists mostly of sitting in stand until dark. Average high was 34 degrees and average morning temp was 20 degrees. I say average but we hit as high as 40 this year and as low as 3. Would the Axis be best suited for this style of hunting where I'm stationary for 1/2 the day and either pushing or spot & stalk the other 1/2 of the day? Or would the Talus or Guide be better in this scenario if I included a base layer/s? Thanks!

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need an insulation layer under it, like our Super Down or Kenai, if you're planning on spending time sitting stationary in a tree stand. But otherwise, Axis is a great outer layer choice for those conditions.

    For the oregon coast where even when its not raining the under brush is normally wet in oct, November would you recommend the Talus or axis pants?

    I do really love my axis jacket but really wish it had the double zipper for the pitts like all the other kuiu jackets :S as its very difficult to open and close, and at times almost impossible.

    I have 6 of your jackets, including Yukon rain gear. Why don’t you make all the soft shells waterPROOF?. I have RiversWest gear and their stuff is totally waterproof. Is it a breath ability issue?

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they were waterproof, they wouldn't be classified soft shells--by definition, a soft shell doesn't have a membrane, while a hard shell does. No matter how good a membrane is, a soft shell is more breathable.

    Is this system quite enough for close encounters with whitetails. Will it hold out the rain and wind on an all day sit.

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HI Aaron--yes, it's very quiet, and will definitely hold up to the wind. However, it's not a full rain jacket--it has waterproof panels to keep light rain and snow off, but in the event of a full downpour, you'd probably want to have rain gear.

    Would the gloves keep have dry for a rainy day when keeping hands in pocket most of the time, but handling wet equip periodically? Example, a wet bow/gun, etc.

      (To echo the comment above) How well would these fit under a mitt? Any particular Mitt provide more warmth in that format (Axis glove + Down OR Axis glove + Synthetic)?

    • @danbyrne7491
      @danbyrne7491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just saw this watching the video lol. Yes they keep you dry even on rainy days when your hands are up on your Bino’s glassing. And I wear a medium in both merino glove and axis glove and the axis will fit over the merino it’s pretty tight but works.

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're a bit warmer, yes--since they're water and wind resistant, they breathe a bit less, but will retain warmth better.

  • @AaronMaz

    Axis is a great jacket and I love the fit, but the Guide is far superior. You guys missed the mark when decided to not include all the pockets the guide has also hood adjustments. Oh and not to mention the two direction pit zips. It seems like the jacket was dumbed down in order to add the new water repellent fabric and then you raised the price? Not sure it really makes a difference either. I’ve worn both in a down poor and they seemed to both produce the same result. Oh and why not add waterproof zippers? Extra money I was expecting a little more goodies not taking things away.

    • @kuiuultralight
      @kuiuultralight  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Aaron, thanks for the comments. One of the things that may help you to understand why we made the feature choices we did is the final cost--the more pockets, adjustments, and two-way zippers a jacket has, the higher the cost of cut-and-sew (and therefore, the higher the final cost) because of the additional time it takes to construct that piece. The pricing of the Axis is, yes, due to the waterproof fabric and seam taping, which is considerably more expensive than the softshell fabric found in the Guide jacket, both because of the fabric and the additional materials and time involved in taping the seams. So, we made decisions on features that we believed would keep this jacket useful, while keeping the final cost of the jacket to be something that wouldn't make it prohibitive.
      The question we'd need to answer before making a jacket with that kind of feature set and higher price is how much you (and the rest of our customers) would be willing to pay for a jacket that includes all those features? That's not meant to be flippant--these are very real considerations for us as we build our products. Thanks for the feedback!
