Believe it or not, Thane actually died on my first trilogy playthrough during the Suicide Mission. So Thane being absent from ME3 was my initial experience. I had NO IDEA how much I was missing out on until my second playthrough.
@@vortex7733 He can also die if you didn't upgrade the ship with the 3 essential upgrades. I missed one in My first playtrough and he and Jack died (loyalty with her)

Jack died on my first suicide mission. I had brought Garrus and Grunt with me to the final section not knowing you need to leave more combat-oriented members behind to hold the line. So Jack literally died off-screen holding the line. There was one camera shot of her body on the ground with Collectors running by. I didn't know that weaker combat squad members were at risk of RNG death if you leave them behind without enough tougher members there. So I didn't miss a TON of content in ME3, except some awesome Jack moments. Bottom line, I learned to just bring like, Tali/Mordin/Jack/Thane with me on the final part of the suicide mission because they seem to be the most at risk of RNG death.

There are almost no ramifications for mass effect 3 if Thane survives. The only thing that changes in ME3 is some dialogue with Thane and Kolyat However is Thane dies, the consequences are much worse.

I was keeping my eye on the krogan body guard, because Thane mentoned Talid would be easy to notice because of him, and I wasn't even looking at what colour Talid was wearing or anything like that. Then at one point I believe they separated for a while, and I completely lost where the damn turian got to. It was such a relief when I was actually able to not fail this quest on my third or fourth playthrough.

When I was a kid I had Thane do the role during the suicide mission where they were responsible for closing the door. I payed attention to his dialouge on the Citadel where he said that when he was younger he would always play in and sneak around through the vents and airducts where he lived, so I figured having him do the sneaky bit to get to the door controls undetected would be a smart move. He died because he wasn't a tech specialist. I thought I had a moment of being intuitive but the game just went "nah fam wrong answer".
I failed this mission 6 times in one night because I kept getting distracted by Techno Turian. Luckily I saved my game as soon as this part of the mission began; this is an escort mission, and I hate escort missions - they're so easy to fail.
I have a suggestion for a “what happens” video: as we all know ME2 has the largest squad roster in the trilogy with 12 that consists of 1 vanguard, 2 soldiers, sentinels, infiltrators and adepts and 3 engineers but what we don’t want to admit is that more than half of these squad mates are optional as you can continue the story without the DLC recruits, the post horizon dossier recruits, Grunt or Legion so what happens if you play the suicide mission with only Jacob, Miranda, Garrus, Mordin and Jack?
i've only failed this quest once, and it was because my game glitched. the door you go through immediately after your 'talk' with the stock boy couldn't be interacted with and i failed the mission by being unable to report in... or it was something like that i'm pretty sure. it was years ago so the memory's a little blurry.
Thane's loyalty mission is the first mission that I failed. I was too slow into tailing the target and I'm at loss since at the last stages he would change direction and I don't know which way to go from the location I was in.
I always found that mission impossible and give up. The guy I'm tracking just goes in a direction that there is no top door to. Time limits panic me into stupidity anyway. I can't think under time pressure. I've never been able to make Thane loyal.

Actually there is a consequence for not having Thane's loyalty in Mass Effect 3; if you don't have Thane's loyalty and he does survive the suicide mission and you don't talk to him every chance you get before Kilang (I don't remember how to spell his name) attacks the citadel to go after the Salarian council member then she always dies without Thane's intervention.

There are a few items on the catwalks that you can grab, and I got turned around after grabbing a few. Ended up losing sight of the turian and walking back in the wrong direction. I also hadn't manually saved beforehand. I figured it would be okay. I would just keep Thane in my combat party for the final fight. I didn't realize that there was an opportunity for disloyal party members to get killed when the final boss dies. Poor Thane. For perspective, this was my third play-through of ME2 when this happened. Previously, I had always succeeded the mission, so I got cocky and thought I could casually grab the items.

You can't import your character to Mass Effect 3 if Shepard doesn't survive the suicide mission.
