  • I've worked at both a Startup and a Fortune 500 company within the first 3 years of being a Data Analyst. I can say that they are completely different and suit different people in both. Today we discuss these differences and which may be right for you.

    Hi Alex, I think It's one of your best video.
    It's very important to know yourself and if you want to work with Startup or big company. In my opinion, you learn more stuffs working with Startup but you have the stability with big companies. You could add to work in consulting, to go to work in a company but it's your client

    Hi Alex! Thanks for the great perspective of what it's like working at a start up versus a Fortune 500 company. I think the knowledge you shared on what a role at each of these types of companies is fantastic information to know. Awesome video! Keep them coming!

    So funny you keep hitting perfect topics for me! Currently on contract as a data analyst (tho there isnt much analysis in my work - i'm doing routine procedures and also building and debugging data pipelines) - anyways, on contract at a fortune 100 company and looking at Data Engineering roles there. Last job was a single-person-with-some -help shop where the stability of the company seemed to fluctuate by the hour. I dont really like either - but I have an HR screening at a mid-sized company? its been around 10 years and has approximately 100 employees. it sounds perfect to me! (My husband does the health insurance for our family)

    I'm 39 and I too am a family man-data analyst with four kids and agree that the benefits are a huge deal when your a bit older and have a spouse and kids.
    Sounds like you have a lot of different work experiences in the data field. What do you think your next title will be, DBA, data engineer, data scientist, report programmer, some sort of data analytics manager or something else?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely relate then! If I had to guess I will probably try to get Lead/Senior Analyst from where I currently am. After that I most likely see myself going the manager route - although I have thought a lot about data engineering. No other job I've looked into sounds interesting to me.

    First of all, broccoli. It sounds nice and it is very similar in Portuguese, my native language: brócolis.
    Amazing video, Alex.
    I am just starting my life here in the USA and I was already a Data Analyst in Brazil.
    Now that I have authorization to work here, I am applying for jobs as a data analyst too. And man, market here is crazy. Especially during pandemic. Every position that I think I am a good fit, I have more 200 people competing with me.
    Anyway. I am 28, no kids, live with my husband. I never worked for a startup, but it feels like I am going to learn a lot and that will help me with my path to a big company in the future.
    I really appreciate your channel and all of your tips.
    Now I know what to expect if I get hire by a startup.

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad to hear that! Sounds like you're well on your way! The market is definitely wild at the moment, but with your experience hopefully you'll find something soon.

      @@AlexTheAnalyst for instance, I have a dataset I want to work on and give proper insights to my team. So, what step should I follow first. Should I load the dataset into SQL first and work on it in that software or should I perform any other operation first?

    I've worked as an IT Support at a Start-Up company. It wasn't the best, to say the least. What would you say to the employees who are starting fresh at a start-up with how to handle the workload, the fast pace environment, the many hats you might wear, and the stress level? By the way, I love broccoli 🥦I consistently eat it most days along with my chicken and rice

    Hey Alex! Great content. Thank you. I had a conversation with a friend on the Dev side of the business. He mentioned that (SAFe) Scaled Agile Framework expertise is becoming a highly prized skillset. Since you work at an enterprise-level organization, can you speak to your experience working in that environment, any Agile frameworks utilized, and any expectations from your management related to your professional development? Thanks in advance!

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agile is a must. We use it at every level of our company. We were a Scrum methodology, but changed to Kanban recently to accommodate a lot of support requests. I think it's definitely worth putting on your resume as a lot of people look for that.

    I feel super stuck in my current job, but i’m constantly working towards improving my statistics knowledge and also learning sql on udemy,
    It’s so difficult right now here in India to get a new job because of the pandemic situation, but I truly hope that in the next few months to come, I’d be able to bag my first job as a data analyst:D
    Wish me luck!

  • @cruisertechgt
    @cruisertechgt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is it hard to switch between different jobs with different data domains? Or once your in healthcare then that’s your field ?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a really good question! It is much easier to stay in your same domain and get a job since you have that domain knowledge, but if you work with financial data in healthcare you can use that to switch to use financial data in finance or marketing for example. It is just a little bit more difficult. Of course, staying in your domain is going to be the easiest way to switch jobs, but it’s still very possible to switch domains!

    Tell your son your fans like Broccoli, too!
    I’m new to Data Analytics. I was lucky enough to find a position in the field. It’s an interesting blend of Fortune 500 job security and training with a the same kind of variety you’d find at a small business. Unfortunately, the pay is like a small business as well.
    What skills (beyond the basics - SQL, Python, Tableau, Excel) could I focus on to make myself valuable? What soft skills would be useful?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I will :D
      I would focus on a Cloud Platform. That's going to be a big one that will help make you more valuable faster. Companies that need a cloud platform typically can afford to pay more. Biggest soft skills you can have is problem solving and communication. If you can figure out a companies problems and effectively communicate that to them you make yourself very valuable.

    As someone who interned at a Fortune 500 Company and got her first job at a small media company, the differences in benefits were a total shock. I agree though that this experience is only going to make me a stronger candidate in the future for large company, when I’ll be needing more money for my family. Also, how cute is Max?! 🐕 🥦

    Working with startup is really an advantage to grow your skills! I have a question please.. Since, I am a self paced learner, and if I wanted to complete some projects on Data analytics (real time will be a plus), which website or way you would suggest me to achieve some projects which are recognized by the industries for an Entry level or Associate Data Analyst?
    It would be really helpful for lot of us. Since, most of the freshers like me are stuck onto this (who are self paced learners), we don't know where to exactly apply our knowledge and most important, very few companies offers a data analyst jobs to freshers with no projects. They need experience, So may be doing industry recognized or real time projects might help us?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great question. I recommend using Github to host your projects - using GitHub.io to actually be your portfolio. It shows knowledge of Github and is relevant in the industry. For projects themselves there aren't really a lot of great examples out there. I'm working on creating an example portfolio for everyone to be able to see, but it is not ready yet. I recommend working through projects that are in courses and taking those and making it your own. Tableau Specialization on Coursera has a fantastic project that they do in their course.
