    I'm glad I did my research on the Bootcamp courses. You mentioned one that doesn't guarantee job placement. I spoke with the representative and they mentioned it being self-taught, in addition to meeting a mentor once a week. For that amount of money, I'll spend my time studying on my own and get my portfolio up and running.

    Excellent video Alex. I'm a self taught BI Analyst. I didn't spend big money on learning. Did loads of self study and followed courses on coursera, Edx and Udemy to get the guidance I needed. Some workshops are technology dependent which I didn't think the best for me.

      Did you have a related degree? I absolutely can self study but I dont want to put all this work in just to be denied by progressive credentialism.

    I'm a 25yo Brazilian and have a electrical engineering bachelor's degree. I'm 2.5 years down in my career, but it has never fascinated me much. When I found out about data analytics (thanks to you, Alex), 5 months ago, it was like a whole world opened up to me.
    Since then I've been learning all the required skills for a data analyst and I'm really enjoying it. I'm more applied now (even with a full time job) than I've ever been my hole life.
    My objective is to get a DA job here in Brazil, when the timing is right (I need to put the salary gap into account, short and long term).
    For the future, my goal is to get a job in another country, since I've always wanted to live abroad.
    Thanks for all. Best wishes.

I've 10 years of experience in construction and 5 years in machining/manufacturing as well a 5 years in customer service. I'm looking to get out of manual labour and into something that requires thinking and creativity.

    Hi Alex,
    First of all thank you for you're very clear high quality videos, finding your content amazing and very helpful.
    I'm 30 with no degree. Went from high school to completing a cadetship in photojournalism. After this I made a move into the tourism industry, in particular adventure tourism and paragliding. From 2013 right up until COVID I was instructing paragliding, flying tandems and working as an operations manager for a tandem company in New Zealand. The roles in this job were broad, and covered some basic web development and marketing, and allowed me to apply my photography experience in a marketing capacity. Long story short, COVID hit, wiped out the tourism industry in NZ and I made a move back into photography full time and have been shooting real estate up until preset.
    I've been considering changing careers, as my heart isn't in real estate, and have always had an interest in IT as a hobby (basic web dev/swift & iOs/some python). Recently discovered the field of data analytics and it was like a lightbulb moment. The mix of analytical and creative problem solving aligns so well with my way of thinking, and for most of my life I've been slightly obsessed with using and leveraging spreadsheets to collect data and find ways to improve various parts of my work and personal life. I was writing spreadsheets find ways to improve the operation of the tandem paragliding business pre-COVID and never knew this falls under the field of data analytics.
    I'm working my way through the Google Data Analytics course on coursera, as well as the datacamp modules (SQL is so much fun!), and know this is the right career for me, however I'm having trouble deciding whether to commit to a bootcamp later this year. I'm looking into Ironhack in Berlin, as I will be there through the summer, and more importantly they offer a job guarantee type funding (no payment until you earn over a certain amount in the field). Considering that there will be no upfront cost, and being realistic that it's a fantastic fast track for skills, but knowing it won't get me 100% job ready, what are your thoughts on going down this path? Will combine it with self learning up to the course date, and focus on personal projects afterwards until I manage to land my first job. Would a bootcamp be sensible in this scenario? I feel that I'm a little too far in my life to start a 4-5 year degree.

    Hey Alex, interesting insight on the degree approach! Very useful content as usual!
    I have been self-teaching myself for over a year now using Python, SQL, and now Tableau, and I have enjoyed every minute of it! I am 45 yeas of age. My job history prior to joining the Navy at age 33 was working low-wage, low skill jobs except for having run a small income tax service business preparing basic and more simple business tax returns for clients for a few years prior to joining the military. I served four years in the Navy as Hospital 'Corpsman working in a General Surgery clinic. When I got out, I pursued both an undergraduate and master's in exercise science. I graduated back in 2017. Since, then I have only been able to find low-wage, low skill jobs (helper clerk at a grocery store, physical therapy aid, ticket-scanner at ski area, Target cashier, etc). Basically, other than my career in the Navy and owning a small income tax return business, I have no civilian career established. I have no money, and am $100k in student loan debt making $17.5k a year. I do not want to work in a clinical setting where I am working directly with patients. What would you suggest I do to increase my marketability in hopes of getting a data analyst job? I have no wife or kids, no house, so I am not tied down to any of those obligations. Should I consider going into more student loan debt to pursue a master's in computer science or statistics? What other options are there?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a very interesting situation. My general thoughts are that at your age it would be more difficult to get a job in analytics without having any background. Unfortunately, you've just had other jobs so your domain knowledge isn't in analytics. This may be one example of someone who may benefit from a Bootcamp. I would only recommend it if it came with a job placement guarantee. So you don't have to pay until you get a job in analytics. Since you're making low income anyways anything you get should be a pay-jump. Since you don't have family or kids then you theoretically should have time to invest yourself into the Bootcamp. Getting a degree is a good option, but it's a long-term option. It sounds like you're wanting something faster.
      I say all of that with the caveat that you should still be self learning and teaching yourself these skills. You could be creating portfolio projects as you learn and updating your resume with the new skills you learn.
      I hope that helps! And thank you for your service!

    • @whoome1638
      @whoome1638 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everything Alex has said is spot on. You’ve been studying for a year which is great. Going into a Bootcamp would be best. After a year, your more than likely intermediate level. You should struggle in Bootcamp too much if at all. I would use that time to focus on more advance concepts. With a job placement Bootcamp you’d be in a better position especially due to your knowledge. Once you land the job, I’d stay there for a year maybe two and try to start applying for more senior roles at another company. A friend of mine is close to your age and did the same, he was hired on as a senior data scientist project Manager.
      I only recommend this because in the tech industry, ageism is huge and older data individuals eventually move into senior roles as companies seem to be fine with the older individuals in those roles. with your knowledge, you will get hired.

    I am a 33 year old biologist making the "switch" to data science. For me, it was actually a pretty natural career change as I was doing a ton of data analyst type work in my job as a biologist. I kept getting more and more into it and better and better at it and realized I a) should be getting paid more, and b) absolutely love this kind of work, so I enrolled in a MS Statistics program and am learning a lot of coding etc on my own. All the coding stuff is actually pretty easy to learn on your own. Self-learning graduate level math and statistics is going to be nearly impossible for most people and is a big part of what separates data analysts from data scientists from what I understand. Some of it is very, very challenging. Learning Excel and SQL is a cinch by comparison and just requires time investment.

      Well I hope they're helping! Haha I wouldn't consider this a high stress job by any means. Maybe at the end of the fiscal year it can get a bit stressful, but not bad comparably. I do have a lot of thoughts on projects and plan on making a video all about it. In terms of showing actual work - I have thought a lot about it and I think I've decided against it. I may just create new projects to show. I'm mostly just paranoid about sharing stuff from work. Lots of HIPPA and company policy and all that.

    I can agree to all the points you have on all 3 paths. The boot camps that offer job placement I would say definitely worth some money but maybe not a ton of investments. I personally do not have a degree in anything and cannot go to school because I have 4 kids (1 is in college) but I'm the single household provider. Shout out to stay at home mom's like my wife, it's a job in itself. So I'm self learning. I encourage to get a certification here and there and pay for what you need at a low cost. I think the information you provided on boot camps and the format was very helpful!
    Although, it might just be because you mentioned health care and I just graduated with a double masters in public policy and public health ;-). I found you because of your tableau tutorials and they were so much better than the college course I took! I know you prefer Python, but I would love to see you do tutorials in R because that one was been horrendous for me to learn.

    For the most part I agree with you. In my opinion self-learning is the best way to get started. You can literally be job ready for data analyst position with three maybe four udemy courses. From there all you need to do is build a portfolio and maybe get one or two certifications, like the tableau certification.
    I think the degree option is good for two people. First, people with no degree. Because it's very difficult to get an analyst position if you have no college degree.
    Second, people who have a degree in something else and have worked in the analytical field for maybe a year or so, or at least long enough to know that they want to make it a career.

    • @AlexTheAnalyst

      I got my current first Data Analyst position in just 6 months after the end of my obligatory military service. I work on my own without teammates within the company probably doing a lot more things than a Data Analyst (data modelling for example). It was quite painful to reach the position though. After military service, I had to work just somewhere for living for 8-10 hours/daily, then return home, studying SQL, Python and Power BI on my own, applying to jobs, improving my CV and linkedin account, learning more about interview techniques, building a github portfolio(which I havent made it already perfect). To sum up, you must be sure that this is the path you want to take for the rest of your career. Because it is gonna be hard. Even if you reach a Data Analyst position, you must not give up improve yourself everyday.

      What udemy courses do you recommend?

    • @mcjon77
      @mcjon77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@quecianawalton8333 My personal favorite for SQL is "Master SQL for Data Analysis" by Imtiaz Ahmad. He focuses on writing queries, which is the most important part of database work for an analyst. He also has a ton of exercises. Additionally, he has a very clear voice and I never have problems understanding him. This was the course that I used to get my skills up for a data analyst position 3 years ago.
      Another good one that I like is "SQL Masterclass for Data Analysis" by Paul Scotchford. He uses MS SQL Server, which is super common in companies and he focuses heavily on performing complex calculations with his queries.
      As a former Senior Data Analyst (now Data Scientist) I am very confident in saying that if you mastered the material in either of those courses you would have all of the SQL skills that you need for a data analyst job.

      @@mcjon77 thank you! I now have a starting point. There is so much information out there and I originally got discouraged that I didn't have this computer language knowledge. I was going to school for 11 years and have completed 84% of a degree in computer science. I changed majors several times before I stuck with computer science and took several semesters off in the process. I was interested in being a mobile app developer, but I wouldn’t say that I loved the idea. I took a course in SQL and had already been using Python for a while and I fell in love with it. I got a job as a merchandise coordinator for a small company, but this company also has me handle data projects. Going to stores, talking with people, looking at sales and transactional data, trying to figure out ways to increase sales or make some processes more efficient.
    I decided to stop going to school, though, because it was going to cost me an additional $20,000 to finish since it’s a private school (the only school I could go to fully online, or at least the only one I knew of). I also have a family and don’t have much free time. I felt, since none of the classes I had left had much to do with data analysis, that my time would be better spent working my current job’s projects (all done in Excel) and my own projects using that data and other data, but using SQL, Python, and visualization software as well. I felt like I could learn so much more without wasting two years learning things that weren’t valuable to the career I actually wanted.
    I’m sorry this was really long, but I guess my question is if you think this is a wise decision to make? I already feel I’m learning so much more, but I’m afraid some employers might question the fact that I didn’t finish the degree. I just absolutely love data analytics and know this is what I want to do with my life.

    I agree data analyst bootcamps is very expensive. I check the prices and it cost from hundreds to thousands. Vast majority can't afford to get it. I wisely choose self-learning especially as a alumni because it is thousand times more affordable. For the past several weeks, I'm watching so many youtube videos related to my desired positions as a Data/Business Analyst. I also purchase some coursera courses through promotion. I am about to do codecademy data analyst for sql, python and possibly R. Self-learning is probably my best bet. I think SQL, Excel, Tableau and Python is probably the best skills for me and I still continue to learning these skills. it takes time and knowledge.

    I think it is a good summary for all possible routes. Choosing a master degree is very tricky for guys with a few years of experience. Some say that having a MS Data Science or Analytics is not sufficient to break into the industry as those students have limited exposure to either computer science or statistics. This is particularly the pain point for career changers without a quantitative degree. Perhaps you may consider covering this topic a little bit in the future? Btw, Avocado 🥑

    I did all three and it cost a lot of avocados...😅. Took grad-level courses in math and played around with computer models in college. Did a solid two years of self-teaching (which doesn't count 13 years of just coding for fun) before starting the bootcamp. The bootcamp was definitely the most fun of the three but then I was basically paid to do it (Covid-enhanced UI) and it had a solid job guarantee. It worked out great for me but I raise an eyebrow even more at claims of rags-to-riches in under a year. My program did streamline the networking and job search process and ultimately placed me with my current employer.
