    Thank you so much for giving me the peace of mind and clarity that I needed that I’m doing the connection properly, the video was to the point, beautiful coverage of the area being viewed with good commentary of the job at hand… what brought me on a search was when I had to go from a 3 prong cord hook up to a 4 prong cord. Being that I’m no professional, I didn’t want to cause any fire or problems to my breaker box because of transitioning from a 3 prong to a 4 prong new cord on my old stove… I had to figure this out on my own… this VIDEO is what I needed for PEACE OF MIND AND A CORRECT INSTALLATION…. Hi, great video. Thanks for sharing.
    I got a Samsung wall double oven. The Electrical cord the store gave me has 3 wires only. Hot, neutral and hot. The oven has black, white and nothing on the red spot. This means the oven works on a 110 volts with a 40 amps braker and wire#8?

      What does the oven installation manual state for the required electrical circuit? Or - take a look at the nameplate on the oven, typically found inside the door, what does the electrical specifications state. The specifications provided by the appliance is how we determine the circuit requirement, because all ovens are not the same.

      Refer to the Installation Manual for the specific oven that you have. If a dedicated neutral wire is required then you may not do this, however check to see if the manual states that the neutral and ground may be bonded together, if so then follow the instructions found in the manual.

    Searched dozens of videos, this was the first that shows what I have in my 35 year old home. I have the 2 wires with the ground wire only for the oven. Red and black with a cooper ground. No white neutral wire at all. I presume it still wires the same as in the later part of your video. If I understand correctly, the ground becomes the neutral and the green ground to the oven attached separately? Btw, there is no plug in my application. It is directly wired into a 4 gang box. Does this change anything? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • @AskTheElectrician
      @AskTheElectrician  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The circuit wiring for the oven or range should be verified and then labeled, especially if the white wire is in fact a power wire of the 240volt circuit, then for example it should be marked as red. If your oven or range does not have a separate neutral wire then the circuit will be OK to wire. However if the oven or range does have a separate neutral wire then you will need to look in the owners manual for the specific electrical requirements and the wiring instructions for the wire connections.

      If the service panel is the main service panel then the neutrals and grounds are terminated together on the same bar.

    My new range has four connectors, two hot, a neutral, and a ground. I am installing a new four prong outlet and have on hand 6/3 Romex which contains three 6-gauge sheathed wires plus one smaller unsheathed copper wire. My question is, can I use this Romex or do I need to get something with four 6-gauge sheathed wires?

    • @AskTheElectrician
      @AskTheElectrician  ปีที่แล้ว

      The 6/3 Romex is correct and is used in a typical installation for the circuit, however the wiring between the range and the four prong outlet should be made with an approved Range Cord. The issue is that a free standing range needs to have a cord so that the range may be unplugged.

    • @AskTheElectrician
      @AskTheElectrician  ปีที่แล้ว

      An approved metallic grounded conduit that is installed according to code with the appropriate fittings, and properly bonded at each end will serves as the ground, again, if it is installed properly, otherwise install a ground wire as well.

    • @TheSilverlocks
      @TheSilverlocks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AskTheElectrician Well, as I said my cable has an included ground but it is not 6 gauge. I included a link in my question to the actual cable I own. Is that going to work or do I need to use a cable where all four wires are six gauge? This seems like an important question.

    • @AskTheElectrician

      @@AskTheElectrician I'm referring to the ground strap that is connected from the green ground screw in the oven terminals to the white middle wire which as far as I know is a neutral yes? i wired the old plug from the old oven (3 prong) to the new oven (4 prong). The ground strap was on the ground and neutral terminal when I removed the 4 prong plug. Isn't the ground strap supposed to be removed and not attached to the neutral when you have a 4 prong plug? It's wired as such from the factory. I just kept the ground strap like it was (ground strap attached to the neutral) and wired the 3 wires on the 3 prong. It works fine. Is there anything wrong with what I did? Wouldn't I be fine being the new oven was already wired with the ground strap attached to the neutral?

    • @summerforever6736
      @summerforever6736 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on if your neutral and ground is bonded at the electric panel if not bonded at the panel ground and neutral should not be bonded at the range either.
      Do you have any issue as it is?

    • @mccartneystuart
      @mccartneystuart ปีที่แล้ว

      @@summerforever6736 it worked fine for a couple of months then my wife cleaned the oven, smacked the heating element pretty good and it stopped working, it would get red hot at one spot right as it comes into the oven from the back oven wall. The stove top works fine and we have a second oven for baking. The range was used, my father in law wanted to help out and grabbed us one before I could get a new one. I haven't checked the panel for the neutral and ground to be bonded yet. I will now. What do you think? If it isn't bonded at the panel I'd think there would be some snap, crackle, pop instantly when I turned it on for the first time? My wife attempted to try the oven again and worked for a couple days, she said she heard it pop (didn't trip the breaker) and stopped working, instantly shut it off and haven't used it since but the stove top burners (not gas) still work fine. I assumed it was the "failed" heating element acting up. They're pretty cheap so I'll probably change that unless you think it's a wiring issue and not the element.

    • @AskTheElectrician

      Before installing a 3-wire circuit consider this, For the sake of having the capability to support a 4wire range in the future, it is always best to install a 4-wire.

    Hi
    I purchased a new Frigidaire free standing range that came with a 3 prong cord my old stove was wire straight from the panel on a 40 amp Breaker, I purchased a 50amp outlet for it, would it work with the existing 40amp breaker?? It has the 3 wire red black and just the silver wires, is the silver wires my neutral?? On my new plug??

    • @AskTheElectrician

      Your range requires a 50amp circuit, therefore a 40amp circuit is not sufficient.

      A 4wire range typically requires a 4wire power source (3 insulated wires and a ground wire), unless your range installation manual states otherwise and provides the method of alternative wiring. Some do, some do not - it depends on which range you have.

    • @AskTheElectrician
      @AskTheElectrician  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If a range is wired with a 30amp circuit the circuit breaker will trip when the range exceeds 30amps. A 120/240 circuit includes a separate ground and neutral wire. A 240volt circuit includes a ground wire and not a neutral wire.
