That was an awesome video, I for one like to watch your videos, some stuff I know about some stuff I don’t. This was a very informative video. I will add that the middle terminal where the neutral white wire is attached had a copper colored ground clip that was connected to the terminal block as well as to the frame with that green screw under the neutral terminal block. This is an important part of that just as a reminder for those who use the three prong cord to make sure that that ground clip is there before installation of that cord. It is a safety thing. Most times it’s in the form of a clip as shown in your video, others have a green grounding wire attached to the frame somewhere and it’s attached to the neutral terminal block. That’s really the only difference between the four prong cord and the three prong is that grounding clip or wire. I’ll tell you the main reason being for that is that if for some reason one of those hot wires ( black and red) were to somehow come loose or gets knocked somehow and touches the frame it will trip the breaker after drawing an insane amount of current in a short amount of time due to grounding out. On a four prong that clip is removed or that grounding wire that came attached to the frame is removed from the neutral terminal block and the fourth grounding wire which will be green an color coded will be attached straight to the frame separated from the neutral terminal block. The reason why most new houses or construction have the four prong receptacles and cords for appliances is also for safety reasons. While the three prong plug can be swapped with another three prong plug and be ok in old work however in new work since the neutral is separated from the ground it becomes another safety barrier. Most don’t know that the neutral carries the return current from the two hot wires when the appliances are using the 120 volts things within the appliances like the lights and clock. Essentially what it’s doing when using a three prong plug is mixing the ground and neutral and hence all the return current is not only going through the white neutral but also the entire metal frame of the appliance and the concern comes in for instance if the white wire from the plug somehow gets loose from the terminal block now there’s no path for the current to flow and if you touch it you become the path back to the source. This is why they separated the neutral and ground in new wiring where just the ground wire is attached to the frame to carry the current in a fault instead of your body. And also since they are separated in a four prong cord the current goes through the 120 volt accessories and travels back through the neutral without being in contact with the metal frame. Now that might be a bit much information for a simple video that you posted which was great by the way. This was moreso for one of the comments where someone asked about a video on the 4 prong cord. That’s just the worded version. I’m sure you’ll add another video on that later. I can’t wait for the next video you do. I get lots of ideas from most of your videos and like I said a lot of stuff you talk about or do videos on I wouldn’t really have thought about like different types of tools and all the key features of the different tools. I would have never thought about a chalk line also doubling up as a plum bob. It never crossed my mind until that video so thanks for that.

Speaking as a long time lighting designer and stage electrician, I wholeheartedly agree with *everything* you've said!! One more thing; I was happy to see that Leah *specifically* connected the neutral *first.* Every young stage electrician is taught to connect in this order: (no matter what!!) Green(ground), White (neutral), Black, Red, Blue(hot). The disconnect is always done in the exact opposite order: hot, neutral, ground. You never know what someone may be innocently doing behind your back, and this specific order of connection/disconnection has saved people's lives!!

You are the only person that clarified which hot wires go to red and black. No one else explains they are interchangeable. Thank you.
It’s AC current not DC
Yep, it's because they're the two opposing phases of your home's 240V service (120 volts each, on the two opposite sides of neutral). Because those phases are alternating current, they swap their polarity sixty times a second. So really, you couldn't get 'em wrong if you tried! And that's very different from a 120 volt circuit, which uses only ONE hot, and a neutral line, to complete a circuit. Not two hots. And that means that THOSE can be accidentally reversed, which results in a possibly OK-functioning appliance, but also potentially safe (depending on its construction). In that way, a 240V range is actually a little bit EASIER to wire safely, than some 120V appliances!

Leah you could not have made more simple and certainly less intimidating. I have had a GE flattop stove for two years that was given to me and I never understood why it did not have a cord. I did not get rid of it . I have been cooking with alternate cooking sources and am tired of it. I started searching for the cord found it a home depot and then found your video. Whew!! Thank You. I don't play with ELECTRICTIY !! I will be subsrcibing to your channel. So patient.... so just like a caring mother.

I fiddle with electronics I thought the White was ground because of that little green screw, the Black neutral -, and the Red was hot +.
In North America for some reason we use Red, Black for both live for 2 phase. Which is pretty confusing

Excellent. I was going about this backwards and was about to try to convert ny recepticle from a 3 prong to a 4 prong without running a ground wire. I think Im just gonna use my old stoves power cord instead and get my $20 back from the hardware store. Youre great.
Another great video. I work on appliances for a living. I have seen people buy a 3 prong cord for a range and it not work in their 3 prong outlet. The problem was that they bought a 3 prong dryer cord instead of a range cord. Now they think that they need to replace the outlet. Could you do a short video and explain the difference? Thanks.

OMG, thank you sooooo much for clarifying that the left and right wires are interchangeable! No where in the Samsung Oven Range directions does it state this.
My useless Samsung manual does however state that the black must go on the left and the red must go on the right and you guessed it, there are NO colors on the 3 prong power cord itself. You're an angel. Thank you!!!

Thanks Leah, I never knew that these appliances did not come with the cable already attached. But now that I think of it, I remember replacing the garbage disposal under the kitchen sink, and that did not come with a cable attached either. I suppose this gives the manufacturers an opportunity to sell us something extra. Anyway, thanks for another informative video.

Which I almost did until I saw your oven how the neutral spot had that piece of metal bent down and and attached to the ground screw. Since I was chancing from 4 to 3 prong my oven had never had that piece bent down before and I had to do that.

I don't why this video doesn't have 4 million views because it should. Jane Drill answered the major question I had about the three wire plug which is the center to center and the others don't matter since they are hot. I replaced my range and was concerned since there was no color coding on the plug wires which I removed from the old range. As she says at the end "you can do this" and that is the truth

I'm glad I didn't need it, but if you don't have a video for people who have older houses with a 3 prong plug, but buy a new stove that has a 4 prong terminal. when I was reading I realized I may have done this since the house was built in the 50's but I lucked out!

Thanks for the help! Instructions for the chord said to tighten the relief bracket until the metal brackets touch, but I was concerned this would pinch the wire! But your video helped.

Holy moly this video was so helpful. First time homebuyer, got the stove & fridge delivered only to realize it didn’t come with a plug, who knew ): then when I bought the cord which came with a strain relief, the little “wings” were too big to fit in the cut out circle in my stove! I almost cried. So if anyone else is in this predicament you can buy smaller sized ones in the electrical section of the hardware store. They were called something different, not a strain relief, but I took that piece in with me to compare & found something that looked the same but with smaller “wings” on either side & that one actually did fit in the hole in my stove.

I was walking around Lowe's today not looking for a stove. But, saw this Black coil stove sitting all alone. I walked over looked inside. It said " As is'! So, I asked what was wrong with it. The manager said it had a little dent in the back. It was so small I wouldn't have noticed. So, I said how much? He said, "$250.00"!OMG! Ring me up! A brand new stove! I had a Friend pick it up! Now I'm putting the cord on! What a great Day!😊😊

How about a few diagnose and fixits on refridgerator videos?? Like when it freezes up or when it isnt getting cold enough on the refrigerator side? I used a repair site and got the parts and did mine...saved another $150++. Both very EZ repairs.
