Tracheal Collapse In Dogs | How To Know If Your Dog Has A Collapsed Trachea? | Dogtor Pete

  • Tracheal collapse is a common cause of coughing and airway obstruction in dogs. The trachea, which is also known as the “windpipe”, provides the air supply from the outside to the lungs.
The trachea can be thought of as resembling a vacuum cleaner pipe. It is a flexible but firm tube that is reinforced by strong cartilage rings. These rings are not complete but rather “c-shaped”, with the open end of the “c” facing to the inside of the neck with a ligament attaching from the one end of the C to the other. Sometimes these cartilage rings weaken and cannot hold their shape causing the trachea to narrow or even close, making it more difficult for air to pass through.
If the rings of cartilage lose some turgidity (strength and rigidity), or the membrane becomes slack and sags, the tracheal rings will flatten when air is drawn into the airway during inspiration. This is called tracheal collapse. Tracheal collapse makes it difficult for air to get to the lungs.
There are a number of different treatment options for tracheal collapse, but your dog will need to be seen by a vet to rule out other causes of coughing.
Even with good medical and surgical control, most dogs will continue to experience at least some coughing throughout their life, but they can continue to live a long and happy, high quality of life despite this.
Thanks for watching. Let me know down in the comments if you ever had a dog that suffered from a collapsed trachea and what you and your vet did to help him?

My chihuahua was just diagnosed with this. I fucking hate it, because she is absolutely wonderful in every way possible. She doesn't deserve this at fucking al. Literally I have had everyone tell me about how amazing she and her brother are. "We've never witnessed chihuahuas like this". Even my vet and all the people there say the same thing.
It's not "training" I haven't trained them to do anything and they barely listen to me.

My little Chi/Cav has developed Tracheal Collapse as an 11 year old dog. Her male sibling has had it for 10 years but to a lesser degree, perhaps a Stage 1. Ellie his now at Stage 4, however my young Chinese local Vet was reluctant to prescribe Steroids. I will now seek another Vet who is an older person, as I have been informed the younger Vet Students are against using steroids!

2 of my little dogs, have trachea collapse and hip dysplasia. Months ago I started them on glucosamine chews and now also collagen added to their food. Both of these supplements seemed to have helped a lot! I give cough medicine mixed with honey when necessary, also canine aspirin for the hip pain. My dog is 8 and has been diagnosed with tracheal collapse at the age of 4, we are managing the condition with regular steroids for the past 4 years.. I can't stop the treatment as symptoms always worsen when I try to wean her off steroids... I tried all sorts to stop her coughing attacks, about one year ago I found a way of stopping her coughing by holding her mouth closed and putting my hand over her nostrils, (to stop her from breathing) within seconds it seems to stop the attacks as it seems to interrupt the sticking and ballooning in her windpipe that is going on during the attacks. Hope this makes sense, the dog even comes to me when she is experiencing an attack as she knows I can make it go away. Try this out on your dogs during attacks.

Trachewl collapse is also caused by their leaches.
Each time owners pull on a leach, the trachea damages.
Dogs who pull hard on walks damage their trachea.
Many leople damage their dogs by buying collars who damage the trachea, pull hard if a dog pulls.
So, if you love a dog, choose never ever collars and never pull the collar brutally to teach your dog NOT TO PULL.
    BTW.
    The same thing with harnasses.
Pulling hard on a harnass damages the ribs and can cause multiple problems.
Train your dogs without pulling on anything that damages their beautiful bodies.
    Also.
Good fresh food, non commercial feeds the tendons, cartilage, bones, muscles and so on.
Most people do not want to use fresh nutritious food and give processed foods and give to much of the same every day.
If you REALLY LOVE A DOG, YOUR DOG, give him food who gives him life, not sickness over time.
Meds, vaccines, antibiotics, ticks/fleas meds, allergy meds and basically allmeds, pain meds...ruin very quickly your dog.

He has also had reverse sneezing which started after the vaccine. Hes currently on hydrocodone to help with his cough and is not in CHF. Hes a 13 year old rescue chihuahua who is a sweetheart. He is still coughing a bit but a lot less. I'm sure the nasal vaccine caused some extra irritation. I dont know the degree of his tracheal collapse as hes always had a cough since his adoption but this past week was much worse after vaccine.

I'm taking him to the vet soon, but it doesn't seem urgent because it doesn't cause his distress. My Pomeranian/Dachshund mix is about 8 and a rescue. He is overweight I think, it may be bloat, because he doesn't waddle and he doesn't feel fat he feels full if that makes sense. He has been doing this for about 3 years now, but it started happening more often, hence the appt. It happens suddenly; he's laying there napping then he explodes with a hack/vomit and a small amount of liquid comes out. The liquid ranges from clear to bile-colored, and smells absolutely foul. He hacks after the liquid, apologizes for the mess (I don't know why, he doesn't get in trouble, he's just always been polite), and sits on the floor. He seems to go longer between bouts as long as he regularly takes loratadine and a doggy digestive aid (pre and probiotics) and switches to Taste of the Wild food, but it still happens sometimes. My wife thinks tracheal collapse, but that doesn't explain the foul liquid. I'm thinking something digestive and not including a blockage because he poops. GERD, bezoar, food allergy/sensitivity...can dogs have SIBO? I want to help him cause I know it can't be pleasant having something that foul smelling in your body.

Hey Ian. The breed mix is typical for tracheal collapse, but it could also potentially be heart disease. Best would be to have him examined by a vet and hopefully perform X rays of the chest and neck to help distinguish the two. Excess weight also puts excess strain on the neck and trachea, which could aggravate the problem. The bile coming from the mouth could just be due to excessive coughing, but it would be wise to rule out any GI problems as well at the vet. Good luck! I hope you came right. :)

My dog got fixed and then started a cough. I was wondering when they pulled out the troat tub if they did damage to her trachea. She is one years old never had a caugh and was full of energy loved going for walks and playing fetch. Know she coughs. Can u help

Linda my pekingese started after being put to sleep to be fixed. I am sure this damage was done by the rescue center neutering him. I regret taking him to be fixed listening to people say it's irresponsible not to. He was an older pup and I never should have done it. He is almost 17years old (this November) and he never had ANY issues until then. I don't think I will EVER spay or neuter my dogs again. Something just isn't natural and it affects these pups...even if it isn't in a way we can visibly see it.

My dog is doing this after waking up, has happened 3 times over the last 6 months. She's only 8 months old, I'm wondering if it's a reverse sneeze instead? Again, always happens after sleeping, maybe too excited after waking up to see us? Doesn't always happen though.

Im trying so hard to figure out what is going on with my chihuahua, been to numerous vets, one told me it was heart disease and put on meds that did nothing after being on for a year , got a second opinion and told it was collapse trachea and that my dog has zero heart disease symptoms, I just cant figure out what is going on for sure, the cough is a loud gagging cough and she sometimes throws up fluid at the end, zero heat and exercise tolerance , i cant even take her outside if its hot and humid outside. She is overweight due to no longer being able to tolerate heat so therefore cannot go on walks. Any info would be helpful

Dogs who are groomed. The method for keeping a dog still couldn’t be good for their windpipe. My dog has been coughing like this since he was clipped.

    • @DogtorPete
      @DogtorPete  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey Mary. Excessive pressure on the trachea can aggrevate the cough if the dog suffers from tracheal collapse. But another important cause of coughing is Kennel cough, which dogs can easily get from groomers/kennels, so it would be better to take your doggo to the vet to try and figure out the exact cause :)

Just do no scents around your baby that triggers the trachea issue. Perfumes, cleaning products, laundry detergent etc. Use all natural stuff, lost one last year to this and have my 12yr old now showing symptoms 😭

3 nights ago my Chihuahua passed from collapsing trachea. We had him for 6 years and he was our baby. Our love. These dogs with collapsing trachea eventually die, like mine. He was the love of our life. Smaller dogs who get trachea surgery often die on the operating table. Many don't make it. Dogs that die from trachea collapse suffer a horrible end. It was heartbreaking for us.

This is why I am against breeding dogs! We create creatures that we like and then they suffer and we get annoyed. Nevertheless, I have a question, if the dog is 16 years old and has a collapsed trachea is it more humane to let him got to doggy heaven?

I think you're shooting yourself in the knee. When I think of a Vet from South Africa, I wanna see him deal with animals native to Africa, like freaking lions, rhinos etc not..dogs. For example, there is a channel called Bondi Vet, and they're from Australia. So what they show mostly is animals that are native to Australia. Last time I've seen an episode on snapping alligator turtle, and it was awesome! I can never see a creature like that here in Europe, but there is surely plenty of dogs... It's like those restaurant makeover shows on Netflix where the expert comes over and tells the owner to serve local food instead of sushi in Texas for example. You get the idea mate. I think your channel could be a lot more popular if you'd go down this road, and it's not too late for you to change the direction.

Hey Agent Smith. Thanks for the constructive criticism. You do make a valid point. At this stage in my career, I am only working with companion animals, and thus I am only able to share my knowledge and experience working with dogs and cats. But I may one day consider working more with wildlife, in which case my channel might gravitate more towards wildlife and exotic species.

What a strange, rude, and ignorant comment. You're stereotyping a vet based on where they're from? People own dogs all over the world! Why the hell would a vet switch specialties for TH-cam views? They do well enough in their veterinary practice to not get consumed by chasing views and likes on social media. 🙄

My dog, a 10 year old chi-rat, has developed strider sound--the musical noises like squeaking, on top of the occasional coughing when waking. I assumed this was from the congestive heart failure, plus she has taken epilepsy meds for years. However the video and comments give me hope. I need to get some canine aspirin, glucosamine like @sherrybaby6sb recommends. Few teeth left so the chews won't do. Thank you kindly for the liberating video.
