Kinsmen - Ethos Overdrive Demo

- Since most of us cannot fork over the cash for the D, filling the void for a single device that produces harmonically rich overdrive and a multi-dimensional clean has become the starting point for not only myriads of pedal builders. but amp builders as well.
Enter the fine folks over at Custom Tones Inc. What is provided by this pedal is a sophisticated clean, and a boat load of OD’s ranging from the classic HRM sound, to luscious clean platform many would kill for. The options are endless, the tones are endless and due to time constraints, we have merely scratched the surface on this fine piece of handmade gear.
The Ethos Overdrive is everything a working musician could want in an all in one device and with the added speaker sim one could really show up to the gig with little more than this pedal and kill it all night long.

For an added amp sound: try running it directly into the "return" of a tube amp with a serial effects loop (won't work really with a parallel). You'll bypass the amp's preamp and be using the Ethos as your preamp. Just put to the setting for using it as a direct preamp, not the setting for running it into another preamp. I run it into a Rebel 20 some times. An added plus is that when I use the Ethos' gain, I find the 6V6/EL84 selector has more impact than when using the Rebels preamp. I don't find a bug difference between the two power amp tube types when running the Egnater at higher gain levels, where I do with the Ethos.
By far my favorite piece of gear. I have it constantly running into Ch2 of my Fender amps, while I run a Marshall without (I play a two amp setup live). All things being equal ($wise), if my house was on fire and could only save one amp and cabinet, I'd grab the Ethos (cab I'm not sure). I got it for the dirt channel only, but quickly discovered the clean channel was unbelievable. It adds so much fullness, and ungodly sustain. It lets me get those Eric Johnson clean leads with great sustain at lower volumes without adding a ton of compression like I'd normally need to use to get the same sustain out of my other amps

Great review of a killer pedal! I love mine and use it all the time, both direct and in front of my amps. I would definitely buy another if it were ever stolen! Well worth the money and wait!

It's funny that you match it to Rhode's tone on Crazy Train. I was just saying few days ago that that song is one of the best riffs with the worst guitar tone. I don't know if he was using a Distortion+(one of the harshest and least pleasing sounding OD/distortion pedals of all time IMO) or not. it always sounds so harsh, and like it's coming out of a built-in laptop computer speaker or cell phone speaker.
It's said that tone is all in the fingers, that song is the exception that proves the rule I guess. It's a great song, great playing, but man what a boxy restricted amp tone.
How it compared to Van weelden Royal overdrive?

But why so expensive
As an owner. Just a couple of criticisms. In this video this pedal is being used for anything but what it was defined for. I guess that's OK, but if you're looking into it, you probably want to look at a bunch of other demos to get an idea of what it was designed to do. The closest it comes is with Europa. I mean it doesn't sound bad in these clips or anything, but it's just not a really great representation of all it can do and where it's focused. It takes a lot of work to get it going so if you don't like tweaking then don't buy this.

kinsmen yeah my message came off as abrasive and insensitive, I didn't mean it that way either. I'm glad you demoed it, but it has so much to offer that it's really difficult to nail down how it can be used or even how it should be. My apologies, but I don't want to encourage people to do their research if they are interested in an ethos! 😀
I agree. I own this pedal and my overdrive sound is much better. Listen to some other demos before judging.
The entire demo has both pickups on. Who plays like that? Answer......nobody....
the treble pickup with this pedal is extremely bitey and piercing, couldn't handle it with just bridge pickup... maybe something to consider when buying!
