Two in the pinkie was the best advice I've ever gotten, years ago, for finger positioning in a glove!

I always did it 2 in the pinky. I'd typically wear my index out of the glove but it's interesting to see the other ways of doing it. Fun fact is ichiro suzuki was notorious for cryogenically housing his bats and all sorts of things. Taking care of your tools are important. I used to keep a softball in my glove when I wasn't using it because I hated the feel of a collapsed pocket. I always wanted it to feel like it'll be a perfect shape around the ball. Cool video guys!

Great video! I didn't learn about the two in the pinky until college. I like regular with finger out for catching and infield just for feel and control. Outfield is two in the pinky for life after discovering it. For pitchers two in the pink is probably the most functional for disguising pitches. I'll never forget the Doc Gooden incident where he was tipping his curve ball in the bigs with his index finger outside of the glove.

I’ve always done three in the pinky. I also thought I was the only one. Either way, it’s the most comfortable. I feel like I have the most control of the glove and there is more pocket. Less area for your fingers to get hurt.
Still do this as a 35yr old shortstop..have since travel ball..always create a better scoop as a SS w 2 in the pinky slot method..great videos, also watched teaching my daughter being not afraid to catch!
Exactly how I learned, sitting on the coach throwing the ball into my glove.
..Friend told me to put a finger outside to deepen the pocket & minimize any possible stinging catches. Natural progression after a month or two was two fingers into the pinky slot. It's just natural, no one told me to do it. I had a smaller sized pitcher's glove. Maybe that's why. Extra length helped in the outfield if I was playing there.

i always go 2 in the pinky, but have done 3 before and it was ok, bit for infield gloves i have always done 2 in the pinky but the index finger out and above the index finger hole

I never knew this was a thing. I just always thought it was a weird thing I did. I especially used to do two in the pinky when I played outfield on random occasions since I was an infielder and only had an infielder mitt. Ultimately, I stuck with traditional finger out in the infield.
I always just did standard but now i see this and its so much better when I put 2 in the pinky👌

I taught the 3 in the pinkie for outfielders to 13-year-olds. They looked at me like I had an extra eye growing in my forehead.
I preferred the fingers in the normal finger holes, with the index finger out, for infield. I think you have better glove control. But that is just me.
thats because even 13 year olds know its ridiculously stupid.
You should never teach them anything like that. They should have their own preference. If you would have tried doing that to me at 13, we would have had issues. I have no problem catching and never did using it correctly. This sounds like something someone does who can't use the glove properly. At 13 I had no issues with closing, opening my glove, or catching the ball. I didn't at 10 years old either after learning.

Finger out for outfield too. I had an outfielders glove that already had the finger hole.

You have better control and just feels better. And I do the 3 fingers too. I play the outfield.
I used to play outfield with one in each, switched to pitching and still had one in each, but had the index out. the glove I had, a Randy Johnson glove, had a hole in the index finger spot for your finger to come out. I used to keep a baseball in the basket at all times I was not using it. I would oil and rubberband it around the ball when I put it up for storage.

i learned about the index outside of the glove very early on but i didnt know about 2 in the pinky until a few months ago
i do three in the pinky when i play catch and outfield and either 2 in the pinky or pointer finger out when playing infield
ive tried everything from tranditional to 3 in the pinky with the index finger out (couldnt fit 4). 3 in the pinky is a great option for the outfield if you have a small hand or big glove (for me its small hand) as it gives you more leverage, and a larger pocket on a glove that is more length than depth. it really depends on the glove size, the hand size, and the way the player likes to shape their glove.
also just so you know, Bellinger wears a 13” glove with 2 in the pinky - 1 finger out. i know Byron Buxton wears it 3 in the pinky

I started putting two fingers in the pinky because I saw a dodgers game and I saw someone doing it so I tried it out the next day at a game, and I ended up playing better than I usually did. I was also like 10, 11, or 12 idk.
Edit: I forgot one small detail. I'm a catcher (I have been since 3rd or 4th grade, so like 6-7 years) I also play outfield and 2nd. I'm fast enough to play any position, but I don't have a very strong arm so my coach(s) usually put me at 2 if I'm not catching and there's already an outfield.

have the same question about catchers mitt for fastpitch softball.
i've never found straight up to be comfortable nor straight up with your pointer finger out to be comfortable. 2 in the pinky is by far the most comfortable to me. 3 in the pinky isn't that bad either but i prefer 2. to each is own BUT i really don't recommend playing straight up. what's crazy is when i first tried 2 in the pinky it just felt right, i know you mentioned it may feel off at first and some getting used to but for me seemed as if it was meant to be lol.
I've been doing the two fingers in the pinky since the 1950's. Better squeezing power and didn't hurt that hand as much catching ball in the pocket.
I was shown the pointer finger out style as a kid but I hated it at the time... I think I needed my index finger's strength to get the glove around the ball properly.

Played first my entire life and always had two in pinky and two in ring. Always felt like it made the pocket larger. And never had an issue after doing it that way of taking a ball off tip of pointer finger.

@@seekunderstanding4280 It may not be for everyone but once I got used to it I never ever changed it. I felt it gave me better control of the glove, I felt like I had a bit more reach and range, and as I said I felt like the pocket of the glove was expanded. No more stingers to the tip of the forefinger on a ball that just missed the pocket. Also scooping I felt became a bit easier. Again it may not be for everyone but once I got used to it I wouldn't do any other way.

I recommend the 2 fingers for all players but don’t do the 3 fingers as an infielders. That’s my opinion. Try it all though
I run 3 in the pink as a first baseman. No problems and I love it.
first time into bseball, i used to borrow my friend's glove since i and he were both left handed thrower. when he was there to borrow the glove to me, i used the normal 5 fingers on their own holes. but one day he was away, i borrowed my right handed friend's glove and used it retardly like it was for left handed. and from that time, i always use the glove 2 in the pinky and 2 in ring finger hole
2 in the pink as of late, used to only keep pointer out but as I got older with better glove it was better with 2 in the pink

My 9-year old grandson plays both infield and outfield for his AAA travel team and has been wearing his glove with his index finger out since he was 6. We're currently breaking in a dedicated outfield glove he got for Christmas and he finds TIP awkward. Should I insist he get used to it now or let him go with what he feels comfortable with until he gets a little older?
I've always been standard with a finger out. I'll be honest, I'm 30 and I never knew there were other options but here I am about to go out to my car and grab my glove to try it out.
It's a different feel for sure, but definitely a tremendous difference for the better in the field.

i do it too for first base mitts cause thats basically just 2 in the pinky on a normal glove (first base mitts have a large hole for 2 fingers and extra room for 3 in the end hole)

Do what is most comfortable for you. FYI, a larger glove will give you a slightly better reach, a deeper pocket, and a wider glove to catch with.
So I made a post about 2 weeks ago or so. I said to myself, well crap... I do 2 in the pinky hole already... this is the first time hearing about 3 in the Pinky... well about a week ago I was looking for a Slowpitch glove... a Miken (black with a white basket) I went to put my hand in (my regular 2 in the pinky) and something seemed off... i mean it was a really comfortable glove... and something didn’t look the same when I put my hand in... well I ended up putting 3 in the pinky hole... and it was comfortable. But I’m not too sure about trying it still. I feel like I have more control with 2 than if I were to put 3 in the pinky (more like “keeping the glove on” control)
Something to think about is how the glove is being closed. Thumb to ring finger not four fingers to the palm.

We softball guys also do the shocker grip, 2 in the pinkie, 1 finger out. These all work. Only difference is size of ball, good question though!
Should the wrist strap be tight around the wrist? Gloves always seem tight around the wrist to me, and I don't understand why because when you try to close the glove around the ball, the tight wrist strap is working against you by making it harder to close glove.

Notice the pinky on many gloves is a litte bigger and asjustable Two in the pink one out the stink as my little league coach would tel us. None of us never knew the innuendo till later. Best coach ever. Lol

My son is almost 7. The only way he could wear a glove properly is if it were an 8 or 9 inch glove which is tiny. He has to stick his whole hand in his 11in wilson a450.

However it feels most Comfortable, Surprisingly a lot of people still dunno about 2 in the pink, Some go 3 in the pink.,. Everyone is different you like what you like.. Some gloves even have the finger hobe moved over to the next stall like the R9, they encourage 2 in the pink!
