Used room temperature water to break in my glove. Absolutely fantastic results. Have not yet (big emphasis on yet) experienced any negative effects thus far.
As a purist I want things to be the best they can. But this video got me thinking… I read one potential con is when the water molecules bond with the natural oils they can then dry out leather when the water evaporates and can cause early breakdown of the hide. I’d also think that a glove conditioner is not a 1 for 1 replacement for the leathers natural oil. Also while the surface has been treated is the center of the leather dried out? That’s just a thought. In reality the leather breakdown helps it to break-in. But could a no water break in allow the leather to last longer by retaining its natural properties?
That's a brilliant idea, I'll be using that.... reminds me of when I saw someone get their Weber BBQ hot with a hair-dryer (which I took one step further with a errrrrr flame weeder (flame thrower)... cheers!
Thank you so much for the video and info. Just got my son a 44 crown tip and followed this to a tee. Glove is on the drying table, cant wait to see how it comes out.
I’ve also had the occasional water stains when cleaning gloves. I’ve often wondered if filtered water would negate the issue and how different tap waters might affect the leather🤔
@@ballgloveking also if you leave a bucket of water to sit for a while, does some of the water evaporating lead to a higher concentration of minerals, and then increase probability of staining?🤔🤷♂️
I’m late to the party. I was thinking this as well. We live is an area with really hard water and have a water softener. Could test the water and spend thousands on a softner or just get a couple of gallons of distilled water
I purchased a 12" easton pro collection glove, because of your video, and I love that glove. So, thank you. I was looking at 12.75s last night, and seen that the easton pro collection gloves are all about $199 now. Just giving you a heads up, if you or any of the other glove heads, would like to snag one before they're gone ☺️. Have a great day today everybody!✌️
@deegee1921 took me only about 10 days maybe, of breaking it in? I didn't even play catch with it before the break in as well. Only thing negative I've read, is about the laces, but no issues with those yet. I actually clean and sarna condition the laces on the regular though.
Love your channel and the knowledge you bring to the baseball/softball community. I've learned a lot about the sport I would not have otherwise thanks to you. I do think over the long run that fully immersing gloves for water forming is a bad idea. While you are able to replace the oil lost from soaking on the exposed portions of the glove, all the hidden laces and stitched areas are going to be weakened as a result of the oil loss. I would also have some concerns with mold/mildew since leather is organic and most gloves probably have a bunch of bacteria already floating around in them from our hands. I think the massage-gun option mentioned by another commenter is the safer, albeit more time-consuming route. Just my un-asked-for opinion, keep up the good work!
NEW QUESTION: do you ever experience darker tone stains after the glove dries? i use clean water and this is not the white mineral line you removed with alcohol... id submit a pic here but alas cannot...
2 questions: 01 are the laces weakened by the water, especially where you cannot reach them with conditioner? 02 which conditioner do you use? bonus question, do you use glove oil?
I just got an a2000 dp15 (the david one) because of your videos, and I’m loving it so far. The break-in is going pretty slow, but its looking good so far!
I'm 42 now, and played baseball a lot as kid. I'm now at the super exciting stage of coaching for my 4-year old son's T-ball team this summer. I've been trying to look up tips and tricks and things are definitely a lot different than when I was a kid! I remember we used to soak a glove in glove oil, and then tie it around a ball overnight. Is there any value at all to glove oil? I see it's still around, but it doesn't look like anybody uses it these days from the glove break-in videos I've been seeing.
If you live in a soft water area (or you for some weird reason distil your water), the marks are less likely to happen as you will have fewer minerals in your water. Also, the 70% EtOH thing makes sense. It's used in biochemistry to remove salts from preps.
Love your videos, I'd love to use your service but noticed in your other video you mention a con of the water treatment being color bleeding. I just ordered a black glove but has white on the thumb->wrist->Pinky and red laces. Do you think the colors will be safe with your water treatment?
I broke in my Wilson a 2000 using this method and Holy crap this is the best way to break in a glove and it’s not even close It’s so easy and anybody can do it and it’s so fast and so effective you can have the perfect shape and have it done in a four days it worked so well I think Chris would be proud of of my Break in. The ball glove goat just earned a subscriber. by the way, this is my first time breaking in a glove ever.
Room temp water is most likely exempt from this as I’m thinking it’s the heat from steaming and hot water treatment, but the treatments loosen the fibers in the leather. It’s good for breaking it in faster, but in 3-4 seasons as your gamer, you’ll notice your glove losing its shape and getting floppier faster. I’d imagine the same “relaxing” and loosening of fibers in the leather is happening in the wool inserts
Hey I need your opinion my glove is white snakeskin pink and sky blue should I use water because I want it to have a kinda bowl shape and flair the thumb and pinky
