This video sure took me back to when I was in Little League (I’m 61 now)..... I can just see that “glove mallet” in the dugout or change room.... oh my.... 12 years olds beating on each other. Thanks for the enlightenment of spreading that glove oil on a rag at first and working in the oil throughout the seams and uniformly. I learned a bunch of things, but almost 50 years too late. Seriously, nice for an old Phart like to pass on to my grandchildren. Now about that glove mallet.... My wife might start using it on me.... ha ha ha ha ha cheers....
I used coconut oil on mine, because in my country, I can't find glove oil or balm. It is a players preferred 12.5 H web from Rawlings and I absolutely love it. Still working with a batting machine softball as a mallet to break it in, coming out real nice. By the way, Rawlings, the pictures on Amazon for that glove are the perfect illustration for the word "understatement".
Yes!!! We would dip it in a bucket of water on a hot sunny day, let it sit in the sun and steam naturally with the ball and rubber bands! Then under mattress once dry! Worked great!!!
Yeah kinda, ball in, wrapped as tight as I can get it with elastics, and treated with Dubbin. Might try the mattress you suggested if what I've done isn't enough. Thanks.
Im here from dear even hansen and i followed these instructions on 1 glove and the DEH instructions on one glove , DEH instructions work better , you rub it with shaving cream for 5 min and tie it up with rubber bands , you then put it under your matress and sleep on it for a week, when you remove it , and take of the bands, your glove will be ready
I played center field in T ball almost 30 years ago, two seasons and never played again. Bought a glove to play catch with my son, *still* closing it how they taught me way back then, pinky to thumb. I didn't even think about it until you said it. That's actually kinda funny to me.
@@Grubthetalker I used traditional glove oil once and will never use it again. I applied it correctly and didn’t like the results. I also used Nokona glove conditioner that darkened the glove and didn’t like the results. I use Wilson pro stock glove conditioner that will make the leather soft so it’s workable. The Wilson conditioner won’t add weight or discolor the leather much like a traditional glove oil will. Use the mallet it’s fine, just make sure you have a softer surface to work on. Watch some videos on it so you know what you’re doing. Aso videos are the best showing you how to use a mallet, but I would stay away from the water method with a Rawlings glove, just my opinion.
It'll just take a little patience, take a little time, a little perseverance, a little uphill climb. You might not think it's worth it, you might begin to doubt, but you can't take any shortcuts, you gotta stick it out. And it's the hard way, but it's the right way. The right way... to break in a glove.
I've bought a Rawlings Player Preferred catcher's mitt and...I wanted to ask if I can actually break it in by just wearing it and throwing the ball inside, maybe throw the ball in the air and try to catch it a few times, but mostly just wearing it and throwing the ball in while watching TV etc. Because right now, can't actually find anyone to play catch with(as I've read this is the best method to do it,although the slowest)and there's no pitching machines here 😂
Great question! Here's what we recommend: - Use our glove butter and spread it on with a clean towel or rag - Only use 1 towel/rag for each color (i.e. - if you have a camel glove with a black web you would want to use 1 towel/rag for the camel, and a new clean towel/rag for the black web - but obviously you will use the glove butter for all areas) We hope that helps you out!
I don’t know the way my dad has broken my gloves in when I was a kid always worked good. All we did is put a ball in the glove tie it tight and play catch it has done every glove I own wonders. It’s something I do till this day.
@@RawlingsSportingGoods thx for response. What is the diff between the Rub and Butter, lol? And are either of these better for breaking a glove in versus glove oil? Still trying to keep the leather color intact as much as possible. Thx in advance!
Great question! We don't recommend steaming gloves, but if you do applying the glove oil afterwards should help aid the break in process (just remember that a little glove oil goes a long way 😉)!
Great question! Since catcher's mitts have the most padding of any glove - they take the longest to break in. The best way to approach them is actually to catch off of a pitching machine at the same, or higher, velocities as the pitchers will be throwing when you use your catcher's mitt in game play. If you don't have pitching machine access, or if that process is taking too long, simply apply a light coat of glove oil to the entire glove with a rag, and play catch with it before it completely dries. Then you just need to keep playing catch often until the glove is ready to use in games. We hope this helps you out!
Did anyone ever wrap a ball in their glove and let it sit in a bucket of water overnight? Then after it dries apply glove oil? We used to do that when I was a kid back in the early 80’s

Not sure if this Rawlings guy ever played the game, as a scout and player this is the best way to break in a glove forget the oil forget the water, do these steps and your glove will be ready to go. 1. Start to push the glove in different directions, back and forth loosen as much as you can. Don't worry it will still feel stiff, do this for 20 minutes. 2. Shaving cream, put it all over inside of the glove everywhere its ok if it looks all white just put it all over inside the glove. 3 Get two balls and put them inside the glove, get a belt or long pair of socks and wrap it with the balls inside. Set it aside for a few days. 4. Open up the glove and clean it with a most towel, start to move the glove again in different directions, if you have a mallet start pounding it in the middle of the pocket. 5. Start the process all over again put shaving cream inside the glove everywhere, put 2 balls inside and wrap it and put it away for a full week 6. Clean it with a moist towel and start to play catch. your glove should be ready to play but play a lot of catch Good Luck and remember see the ball hit the ball.

What glove oil spray would be good for a pro preferred glove?
Great question! Here's what we recommend:
- Use our glove butter and spread it on with a clean towel or rag
- Only use 1 towel/rag for each color (i.e. - if you have a camel glove with a black web you would want to use 1 towel/rag for the camel, and a new clean towel/rag for the black web - but obviously you will use the glove butter for all areas)
