- The Rise of the Neon SRT4
In the early 2000s, Dodge aimed to shake up the sport compact segment. The result was the Dodge Neon SRT4, introduced in 2003. Developed by the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team, the SRT4 was a high-performance variant of the Neon. It featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four engine, producing 215 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque, later upgraded to 230 horsepower and 250 lb-ft in 2004.
Unmatched Performance for the Price
The SRT4 was known for its impressive performance. It could sprint from 0-60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, outpacing many of its rivals. Despite its high performance, it was priced competitively, making it accessible to a wide range of enthusiasts. The SRT4’s combination of speed and affordability quickly earned it a loyal following.
Distinctive Design and Features
With aggressive styling, including a hood scoop, rear wing, and large front air intakes, the SRT4 looked the part of a performance car. Inside, it featured sport seats, a boost gauge, and unique trim, enhancing its sporty appeal. However, its economy car roots were still evident, which was a double-edged sword.
Racing Credentials
The SRT4 wasn’t just a street performer; it had success on the track as well. It was popular in autocross and grassroots motorsports, thanks to its powerful engine and nimble handling. Dodge’s factory-backed racing efforts further boosted its reputation among enthusiasts.
Why Everyone Forgot About the SRT4
Despite its initial success, several factors contributed to the SRT4’s decline:
Short Production Run: The SRT4 was only produced for three years (2003-2005), limiting its long-term impact.
Competition: The sport compact market became increasingly competitive, with rivals like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru WRX offering all-wheel drive and more refined interiors.
Perceived Build Quality: While fast, the SRT4’s economy car origins meant it lacked the refinement and build quality of its competitors, which hurt its reputation over time.
Brand Perception: The Dodge brand was more associated with muscle cars and trucks, which overshadowed the SRT4’s sporty credentials.
Legacy and Impact
Despite fading from mainstream memory, the Dodge Neon SRT4 left a lasting legacy:
Performance Bargain: It set a new standard for affordable performance, inspiring future models.
Enthusiast Favorite: The SRT4 remains a beloved car among enthusiasts, with a dedicated community keeping its spirit alive.
Tuning Potential: Its turbocharged engine and robust drivetrain make it a popular choice for tuners and modifiers even today.
Conclusion
The Dodge Neon SRT4 was a remarkable car that offered incredible performance for its price. However, a short production run, intense competition, and its economy car origins led to its gradual fade from memory. If you’re a fan of forgotten performance gems, the SRT4’s story is a fascinating one. Do you remember the Dodge Neon SRT4? Share your thoughts and memories in the comments below! - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I still remember. The reason nobody remembers is that most SRT4’s have been wrecked, just like EVO’s.
Facts I had a new 2004 srt4 and I wrecked it year and half later…then my brother wrecked his about year after that…I have 3 srt4 right now and one I a track only car and my other 2 are my street show cars now! So they don’t see the streets that often. But this is true a lot of srt4 and evo 8 and 9 got wrecked back in the day!

@@BigBoy-mt2ztand when you do find one they want 30k or more for it, not to mention they're extremely fragile, the interior other than the seats are garbage, only people that can afford it is either some old guy or someone that owns a shop and can do everything themselves, because if somebody young thats just getting by would not be able to afford maintaining it, and adding any extra boost will guarantee the car will nade itself, usually the diff from launching it over and over, best thing would be to upgrade every internal and the diff which would be close to another 10k, it's just a really hard car to justify owning, just like an rx7 and 8
@@Yeptturbo6969 You are a bad driver. Fyi. Ijs. I've never totalled a car especially one I value lol
Back in 2004 my mom told me if I graduated high school with good grades she would help me get a car. When I graduated she was so proud that she said let’s go find you a new car. We bounced around to different dealerships. I couldn’t find what I wanted until we went to dodge. I saw a laser red srt4 and told her I want that. It was pretty pricey at the time but she said you need to make sure you make the payments on time. I fell in love with that car. I babied the hell out of it. I ended up joining the Navy and while I was in boot camp my sister ended up stealing the keys from my mom and drove it not even 3 miles down the road before spinning out of control sliding into a field and killing a cow. The car was totaled. Nobody told me until I got out of boot camp. I was heart broken. I miss that car so much.
Sorry, but I wouldn't have a sister after that. 😆

@@darrendent8288 I'm pretty sure the 2.0t that the Dart had in it was the same as the Alfa Romeo Giulia has in it. In the Giulia it pumps out 280 HP and 309 torque. That would have been a blast in that platform.

Im on my 3rd one. First one i bought off showroom floor back in '04 brand new at 21. The one i own now only has 25k miles and the interior is mint/showroom condition. Paint is good too and whats expected for 20+yr old car. Fully rebuilt, forged and calico coated, arp studs/crank strap kit, gtx35r turbo, meth/water inject, etc, etc. I waited forever just about a year to find the right one i wanted. Cleanest one i could find, it was a "California car" most its life coming from "rancho cucamonga". Very clean car and everytime i take it out I get someone approaching me about it. Gonna hold onto this one forever cause its really my baby. These cars are just to damn fun! Its wild ive had practically every lil turbo car, yet still the srt4 i truly enjoy n love the most. Its just so raw of a car. The dodge srt4 really is something special, i cant get enough of them.

I was lucky enough to have Ed Peters rebuild mine and I never had a problem with it afterwards. Man passed away a few years back and donated his transmission parts to an online retailer called Modern Performance.

I was gonna say it wasn't forgotten. People just beat them to death. The Cobalt SS (especially the turbo model) suffered the same fate.
Never knew about this car untill I played Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition on PSP when I was eleven. It was my first car in the series. Unfortunately, I got stuck in Atlanta.
In a later playthrough, after beating the game several times, I chose it again and modified it as I did the first time: black and double stripes with green elements (stripes, windscreen, nitro explosion, etc). Those were the times...
It’s not that people forgot about them. The people who remember and were driving them out grew them. We are all in our 30-50’s now.
I'm almost 40, I still have one 🤷🏿♂️
I owned 2 SRT4s and 1 1998 coupe that i turned into a drag car. I can 100% say over here in my garage they are most definitely not forgotten.
Are they really that unreliable when it comes to mods and the transmission? Ive always wanted one cuz they sound so nice stock or with just a muffler delete lol
@@RJ_Slidez619 Depends on how it was driven, if it was maintained well, who modded and tuned it. The trans is strong, but issues could arise when shifting if not shifted properly or maintained properly. The neon srt4's don't have mufflers stock.

My first car was a neon, I have always loved them. Haven' t seen one on the road in years.

That stock tire hop was real son.
The wheel hop was stupid crazy, even with stock numbers.
i had a stage 3 built 2.4 out of a roller over i put in my first gen BReeze(plymouth neon) that thing was a half shaft snapper it was a go kart man, 4 wheel independent suspenion, 17 inch tires 8 inches wide, man that car was so much fun going up and down the on/off ramps
I remember a friend had one with the same work done from the dealership. It was the fastest car I was ever in. We wrapped the needle at 160 ten times in a row on the highway. Eventually it got a cracked block on the engine mount from too much flexing. He added a quart of oil every day til he had enough. The turbo whine inside the cabin was wild!
A friend I know has two of them. A blue heavily modified one and a red one with an exhaust.

A lot of speed3 got wrecked back in the day when they came out! I remember 3 of them in my local area got wreck weeks apart from each other
No I know that car, I just don’t like it.
I bought one new in 2005 while stationed in Italy. A black ACR no sunroof. What a country to be in when I had this car. About as close to no rules as I could have ever dreamed. Things like passing on the inside or outside in the wrong lane of traffic all very regular occurrences. Imagine a 4 lane road, 2 each direction, and you get stuck at the light 10 cars back. Just drive around them and get to the front on the outside wrong direction. Wait for the light and just beat the traffic in time to get back in the right lane before you have a head on crash. When I would get stopped as soon as they heard me speaking English they would usually just smile and leave me alone.
230hp and the 5,3 secs are insane for that year.
One night when Dodge Executives went in Florida, they partied with some Executives from Kel-Tec. 4mths later, The SRT-4
That 230 hp number was heavily underrated. It was very likely 230 to the wheels.
I miss my SRT-4. 😢
stock they actually made around 250whp
I feel like I recall the Caliber SRT4 made close to 300 at the crank. IF that was true, 250ish to the wheels would be entirely realistic, maybe even 260
I miss mine to lol
I miss my 2004 SRT-4. I bought it right after losing to one in my 2001 Mustang GT. It was so much fun!
It was 230 to the wheels. Like 250 to the crank. I had a red one with a sunroof and the upgraded sound system. My buddy thought his rsx could take me.. I beat him by like 4 car lengths. That second and third gear pulled like crazy. The turbo sounded unreal and the exhaust was the best sounding 4cyl exhaust I’ve hear to this day
Great car! Had a 2005 ACR. These things were raw. That engine had great torque and was WAY more responsive than most modern 2.0L turbo 4’s.

The torque steer was crazy, it actually scared me one time coming out of a corner. My top speed was 135 MPH, and it had no more to give. Great car had fun. I was in my early 40's.. I have not seen a SRT4 on roads in years..
I genuinely love my SRT4. Through all its flaws, It always leaves me smiling.

You forgot to mention the part where dodge out right lied about the power numbers in the SRT 4. They claimed 215 to 230 HP but the real number was between 290 to 310 HP and yes that's completely stock.
No they didn't. I had a 2005 SRT4 and I worked at an automotive shop. We had Dyno days and plenty of stock SRT4's. 252hp at the wheels is the most we ever saw on a stock SRT4. Mine put down 250hp at the wheels stock. After I went stage 3 and all of the bolt ons, on 110 octane it put down 388hp and 425 torque at the wheels.
@@Michael-id9bw I didn't say power to the wheels, the 290 to 310 but even 252 is not 230 and 388 at the wheels is like 425 at the crank. You can Google the real number even multiple different sites say the same thing.
@@Michael-id9bw250x1.15= pretty close to 290
They were underrated by the factory
Most people talking about hp numbers are going to assume you are talking about hp at the wheels since that's what really matters. Anyone in the tuning game is not going to go by hp at the crank.
@@Michael-id9bw yea but considering that not how most manufacturers advertise their stock cars, we should go by the crank. And we aren't talking about people who are tuning their cars. We are talking about a stock car and even you admitted that they dyno higher than the advertise power numbers. Plus it also matter what kind of dyno was used to dyno the car. BTW you should never assume that just because some is talking power numbers they mean at the wheels, for one at the wheel you also have to take into account traction. It doesn't matter how much power you have if you cannot effectively get that power from the wheel to the ground. Not to mention parasitic loss from everything between the crank and the wheels. Even your own data backs up the fact that they outright lied about the power numbers. Also don't forget even though the SRT 4 had a great engine, the stock transmissions and synchronizors were complete garbage. 3rd gear had a tendency to just spontaneously detonate like Hiroshima when you started to push the car, especially with any sort of power mods.
That 2.4 L engine is somewhat based on the 4G 63t😂 going back to the DSM days. it basically is a mini Evo

I had a built motor gt3076r '03 neon. The only time it was in the shop was for dyno tuning and upgrades. ANIMAL. Great memories. Considering the flat-out violent wheelspin on i95, it was built like a tank.
Ngl, that look nice. I love when the lil sleeper gets some cosmetic upgrades
I miss my skittle. Mine ran 9.8s, was fire engine red, and burned through three NVG T850 transmissions. That trans costs about what the car is worth. I also happen to be a mopar tech for a dealership. I would still own another one if I came across the right deal. Too many good memories in this car. My favorite reaction to it was, "but its just a neon!"
The srt4 and the cobalt SS. They were everywhere back in the day. Then it seemed like they all vanished over night.
.....nobody has forgotten about the dodge neon set. I see them all the time
Had an '05 SRT4. Loved it for what it was. Crashed it racing an STI though.
Atleast you used it as intended 🫡
I never forgot the neon.
She lives in my heart rent free
I was just talking about this car the other day with my buddy who bought a new one in 2005 and modified it. We had the best times in that thing. At one point he had a complete and proper stage 3 (or 4, i forgot) setup and the car scared the $hit out of me. I think it had 500 to the wheels. Ive driven it quite a few times and never put the foot down all the way in fear of wrecking it. The v8, STI and EVO guys would poke fun but would shut up real fast when they got smoked. Good memories. Nostalgic car. I spent so much time in my buddy’s I feel like I owned the car lol.
In my neighborhood, there’s this really nice SRT4 that’s silver.
ngl that looks so much like a mitsubishi at the front, whilst still maintaining a subaru wrx and an evo 6 look throughout
I remember that car… I was actually in Japan when they released it was easily one of the best U.S. tuners available. I was actually pretty impressed by it. When I got home dudes we modding them to the moon and they became very fast and fun cars. There wasn’t much competition until the cobalt ss and Saturn red line. They died because of the reliability issues and the fact that if you wanted a car like that the WRX and EVO were superior cars at around the same price.
I remember this car. I bought a red 2005 SRT4 new while stationed in Germany. I hit 163 mph on the Autobahn in that car. I traded it in for a 2009 Subaru WRX while I was stationed in Cali.
These srt4s were badass man.. I remember in like 2017 I had a 04 mustang gt full bolt on and tuned and raced a full bolt on and tuned srt4 from a dig to 90mph, and that little thing got me by a quarter of a car length 😂 wasn't even mad tho, love a good race and all car builds
Those early ones the motors were blowing up like crazy. Thing put out more hp and tq to the wheels than advertised. It was the fastest fwd car stock at the time
Same thing can be said of the Saturn ion redline, amazing domestic tuner cars that are just long forgotten.
I had one and it was such an amazing car. Barely modified and would put others to shame. Sounded amazing too!
Those of us racing back then remember them. We also remember the wrecks and friends lost to those overpowered lawn mowers.
I loved my 05 SRT4. I loved it so much that I owned it twice!
Same, my 1st '05 was in Orange Blast Pearlcoat (I stupidly totaled that car), then got an '05 in Stone White.
Had an 05 black ACR with the Viper seats. Gone but not forgotten ❤.
How could we ever forget considering it was a first choice option from nfs underground, the memories that will never be lost 🙏🏻😊
For about 2 years in Houston, every time there was a flipped over car on the highway, it was the srt neon.
Still have mine. Still original owner too. I will probably never sell. Cast iron block boosted. They make a transmission upgrade that will handle anything now for it.
I wanted one of these so badly. Took one out for a test drive and yeah, for as little of a car, it had some great power.
Brother of mine I was in the Marines with had an SRT4 that was all modded out. Tht thing was an absolute beast
I miss mine so much! I put a bigger turbo on it and a monster clutch and some radial sadly to burn down a few week later from fault wire in dash. I cried that day! RIP OL BLUE! I'll never forget scaring people with the blow off valve 😂❤
I had a neon sxt for 15 years. Best car I ever owned. Flooded it out driving through what I thought was just a puddle. I miss her… 😢
I remember those. I used to call them darts until I found out they were called neons. My friends parents used to own one that was orange. It was one of the coolest cars at my middle school.
I have not forgotten. I also havent forgotten the Ford Contour SVT...
Buddy of mine bought one of these brand new. Car was a beast for a front wheel drive turbo car. You could easily stock do 165. A lot of good times adding performance upgrades and just hanging out with buds.
My first car was an ‘03 Neon in ‘06. Loved that car. Wasn’t an SRT-4, but the neon was a dope car nonetheless. Then they replaced it with the Caliber.
the transmission was a beast as well super underrated
I remember this car lol there's literally a blue one of my neighbors own and boy does it sound great. Awesome cars.
