- On this episode of #motoringbox we're taking some important first steps on our journey of turbocharging my 2001 Ford AU Fairmont Ghia! No Barra here, we're using his Dad instead - the mighty 4.0L Intech VCT SOHC engine! With careful planning we should be able to retain a lot of the car's ECU functionality, and then use a Haltech Elite 750 to run the engine and handle the boost control. Join us on the adventure and we'll see how it goes!

Hope you're pumped for the AU Turbo project! I still have the chunky alloy AU (BA?) radiator if someone around Brisbane or Ipswich wants it for free ✌
That'd be great in my poor ol au
would you post it to perth if i chuck u some cash for it 😂
Love how you've been sneaking Gran Turismo music into the background of the last few vids
I recognised the first track. Like an old Japanese citypop song.
And Goldeneye 👌
Loved the goldeneye music haha
What a glorious way to start Bathurst weekend
Very cool. Can't be a lot of folks out there putting big bucks and good quality parts into an AU Fairmont Ghia.
Not many!
Here I am with a fully forged setup and a nexus standalone in a au fairmont. Hahah, nah there's actually a fair few now!
Just a maintenance task... they were good solid cars.
This is a great project for you Sean. By the time it's all finished, every $500 banger AU on the road will want one!
Goldeneye theme for the win.
This was my second car. 1 owner. Perfect condition.
Of course, I thrashed it not knowing I was holding history. Not making the same mistake with my FG.
Will be following this project closely. I'm half way through restoring my FG.
Like everyone else commenting here, I'm really looking forward to this one. Factory parts and no doubt a nice job. 🎉
Library, golden gun, NO ODDJOB.
Wow- commenting as I’m watching.
Love the idea of building it as if it was in Fords vision.
mate what a brave move! there are 2 things i don't mess with on q car and they are Brakes and Wiring! so im bringing my AU to you once i get all the parts!
Love the fact your keeping the VCT purity can't wait to see the Dyno figures at the end
Can’t wait to see the end result
Should perform very well.
Love the approach you're taking using a lot of stock parts, I think this will turn out grand 👌
It's looking good so far. The manifold adaptor might push the turbo out too close to the side of the engine bay, but we'll see.
Plenty of space, as with the oilcooler.
5 years from now this man will either be dragging or drifting this AU I can feel it
You know what I'm most excited about with this build? Sean takes great pride in his work so I know it's gonna be done properly. So many builds on youtube of people doing dodgy "budget turbo builds" I know the intech can handle a fair bit of boost but the point of turboing these car to me is not to see how much boost you can cram into them before they explode. Very excited to see this series!
Stock rods are pretty weak but yes
Enjoying seeing some love for the AU Falcon, great base for a performance car without a huge price tag!!
Turbo AU let's go! I'm psyched for this project, keen to see how this goes. I've love to turbo my VX Commodore one of these days. Also, loving the Gran Turismo 3 & GoldenEye music in the background. Keep up the good work!
Good luck with the build. Will be watching with interest.
Another great video Sean. I've also got a pristine AU Fairmont Ghia with the VCT engine and I'm going down a surprisingly similar route to you. I've already got the 6Boost exhaust manifold adapter sitting on the shelf along with head studs, valve springs, injectors etc. My enthusiasm copped a serious dent when the VCT solenoid started leaking and I discovered that a new replacement is not available (the local Ford dealer told me that I needed to speak to a Tickford dealer as my car apparently doesn't have a Ford engine LOL). I paid a premium for a second hand solenoid that started leaking within 10km of fitting it. Turns out there's a suitable upgrade solenoid for the Nissan SR20DET that works perfectly and has stopped the leak.
Most of my other turbo parts are coming off a stock FG F6 310 as it gets upgrades to turbo/exhaust manifold, intercooler, IC piping, fuel pump and the rest. I'm hopeful that the more logical layout of the FG turbo intake/IC piping will fit without too many hassles.
I love your work and I'll be watching with keen interest.
I'm pumped Sean!
Looking forward to it.
Don't want to rain on your parade but Uncle Rodney could be knocking. In saying this, I think it's excellent how you go about these projects as well as filming and editing and earning a living. Well done Sean.
Rods are stronger than pistons in these, most people gap them pretty big to save ringlands
AU's are club plate compliant (depending on the year of course) in Victoria. We are truly living in the future.
really impressed by the heat shrinks, I'm getting one of those packs
Great video Sean love your work! Thank you very much for the AU wiring doc I'm undergoing a similar this with my AU and was never able to find out what wires are to be intercepted of tapped. Cheers😀
It's hard to find this info online, so hopefully it helps a few people.
Been really looking forward to this ever since you mentioned it
nice, really looking forward to watching the progress on this project Sean.
this looks like it'll be fun
Haha your AU hooked! Thanks I learnt a few things 👍 Looking forward to part 2.
Off to a great start of this project Sean, keeping the smoke inside those wires and electronic components is a positive step!!!👌🤣
Can't wait to see this completed Sean, and that's how I'd do it!! :)
Neato! Loving the soundtrack lol
killer video for people to get lots of info from!
for anyones future reference the patch loom already has suitable power/ground for the wideband, you dont need to wire the separate wideband power/ground
Thanks mate I must have missed that, I'll check it out tonight!
@MotoringBoxTV it's not specified, I really should do up a quite faq to suit the diy add ons to make a few things more clear.
So, it wasn't just me. The exhaust fell off my AU ute as well. Quite a surprise as I didn't hit anything on the road to cause it.
Getting very hi-tech there boss. 😁😁
This is awesome! I have an AU2 Fairlane Ghia with the same VCT engine, and have always wanted to do this exact type of factory style turbo conversion. Very keen to see how you get one with this.
Hi Shaun, this video has got the info I need for my project. Im very interested to see how it turns out. Im making a Barra NA + T to go into my XY Wagon and I didnt know about the piggy back system you are using. Cheers, Phil.
Awesome project, will be a bit of a mission but well worth it. Keen to watch it progress 👍
So excited for this 👍
Love the 007 n64 music haha really beings me back to gorilla mode slappers only 4 player split screen
My favourites were Proximity Mines in the Stack or Golden Gun in the Temple map!
Nice video, Sean!😁
That AU table top for the interior looks pretty sexy. I bet you could 3-D print those and do a modified version for BA BF and the territory and make a fortune……!!!
Cool project I look forward to seeing how this turns out. Something I always hear people say is the Intechs have weak connecting rods, wondering how this will play out since you don't plan on opening the engine. I'm guessing the way it's tuned would probably play a part in preserving the rods.
Best Ford engine ever
I've been waiting and looking forward to this day 😁😁 keep up the good work mate.
Safe to say i will be watching this alot if i pick up a Au in the near future :)
Love the project
another great idea would be using all the turbo territory intercooler and intake. might not be the first au with a wrx scoop on it but would be the first with a functional one. looking forward to how the build comes out and keep up the great videos
Nice idea, but for this one we're going down the sleeper route. Just a stock looking AU, probably won't even lower it! I mean it's not going to be crazy fast, but it may surprise a few people.
I was wondering why you cut AC request lol, can't wait to see how it goes
Watching with anticipation
It would have been 180kw factory boosted. They wouldn't want it too close to the V8.
Great project! Just subscribed
Glad I subscribed bud, this will be intresting looking fords to the next vid bro😉
hell yes, been waiting for this
Love it love it I can barely hear you I’m camping in tent 🏕️ it’s raining ☔️ hard and it’s to early to run your video through my big JBL speaker the wifey will get shity but later today I’ll watch your cool video again I’m in bush near the Qld border near Warwick wrong time of year to go camping 🤣🤣🇦🇺
Haha that sounds like an adventure, hope you're having a great time anyway despite the weather mate.
Thank you
Well Done video.
Oh yea been waiting with great anticipation about this project ever since it was mentioned. Want to do the same thing to my au2 forte wagon one day but made to look like ford did it like how your doing it.
Well fingers crossed we don't run into any huge issues. It'll give you an idea of what you're up for (if you decide to turbo yours).
HERE WE GO BOYS
thumbnail has me pumped and haven't even watched the video yet haha
Hell yeah!
Love it
Grand Turismo and N64 oo7 music 😂
@10:00 how do you know all this? Amazing! I hope this turns out really well.
Can't wait to see where this goes. Personally I think AUs are overrated compared to the B-series, but this should make things interesting. And as someone who loves wagons, it would be really cool to see someone do this to an AU or B-series wagon one day; then it'd be the XR6 Turbo wagon Ford never made. Even as more of a Holden fan, I would honestly consider doing that myself one day 😅
Should BE GOOD SHAUN !
2:20 the Chinese radiator is a ba one, 11:12 another thing I'm doing is using the oem map wire as fuel pressure sensor and oem oxygen sensor as mac valve power and control
I did wonder if it was for a BA. Great idea using the OEM wires, I might do the same - especially for the mac valve.
@@MotoringBoxTV I can dm or screen shot my excel spreadsheet if you want, it is a little bit cursed but it may be of some use to you and I'm very willing to cop some feedback and criticism 😅
@@MotoringBoxTV hey mate, bill here. the pinout i made up for you already has the info for boost control through the old o2 plug. pin 35
Very interested in this, just bought a pov pack au ute as a second car while I do some work on my bf xr6t, whilst I'm not planning to turbo it there is that option and I would like to build a drag and drive car
My stock trans cooler never has never failed 24 yrs and 530k+ km
Let's go💯🔥💪
Sitting in the car in the work carpark, I guess I'm staying in the car for a while
if thats Nintendo goldeneye 64 music...its awesome !!!
You know it!
Aluminum block as a heat sink and the white electric grease between the ignitor.
Yeah I saw that. They weren't really clear if the block is all you need, or whether that needs to be mounted to metal as well. I probably will anyway.
Yeah fix the heat sink to the body, probably not the best to have it all flopping around
Please invest in a pair of pliers
good on you for trying a turbo intech. so sick of seeing barra turbos
Watching with keen iinterest, I would be supprised if the Haltec couldnt kill the smart lock. I have aa 2002 XR6 i would like to do this to.
I am curious what Smartshield picked up on. It still had everything except idle control, the three ignition circuits, power steering switch, o2 and injectors.
nice
Random question mate, how does your Territory compare with the AU, interms or straight line acceleration. Yeah I know, family cars..
It is a bit faster thanks to the 6sp. Goes well considering how heavy they are.
@@MotoringBoxTV thanks mate, father of two still dreaming about cars like im 20......
hey i have that same radiator! mine is on a BF falcon so maybe its for BA/BF and not AU
Looks that way.
The AU would have been the TEST mule for the Turbo systems and the AU is THE best falcon the last of them I believe full stop 🛑
I see to much cost cutting in the later models.
The AU is Australia 🇦🇺
Commodore are Opal
Chrysler Mitsubishi is Japanese
The Ford is prime in Australia and I’m a Mopar man.
I respect home grown improvements on the American Ford Falcon.
Improvements all the way to the AU.
I turboed my Fairmont Ghia. Was much easier than your build as it's a bf. But it was the same goal, What would a factory Fairmont Ghia turbo look like. I only run 7psi boost.
Manual swap....next ???....great way to start the day with a coffee and relax....you probably gunna have a few drifty boys tune into this build 😂....great to see you excited and keen again, good video mate..
She'll stay auto at this stage, that was another big reason I need to keep the stock AU ECU happy - it controls the auto!
@@MotoringBoxTV happy days mate
No way! No way!
😃🤘
Hmm, Im sure I commented 24hrs ago. 🤣🤣🤣
Still there mate. On the secret Patreon version.
Are you going to change the name from mighty AU to mega AU......
By memory the engine had separate connectors in the engine bay, I would get the matching plugs make a loopthru loom and intercept the connections inline versus cutting the factory loom.
3584 or 3582? 82 is b stock series
I went for this one - the compressor wheel is slightly larger but should be fairly similar: www.pulsarturbo.com.au/collections/ford-xr6/products/pulsar-next-gen-6784-for-ford-falcon-to-replace-the-factory-gt3582-turbo
ECU cost more than the car itself haha
Austroolin
Geee, I hope you know what you are doing?
Know enough!
Ahh some tasty content to enjoy with my morning coffee. 🤌
