The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Reaction & Review! FIRST TIME WATCHING!!

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas was a bag of wholesome family fun and entertainment. The story felt original, the music from Danny Elfman was spectacular but the most impressive aspect was the production end, more specifically the stop motion animation which honestly felt like a landmark in the genre. More good news is that the movie appeals to a broad audience, from the kids who’d love the story and songs to the adults who’d appreciate the amount of hard work behind the scenes. This is an easy recommendation for the whole family during the holidays. Any other stop motion films you’d like me to check out? Do let me know!

This movie was aimed more at adults and is considered a masterpiece on all fronts. It’s one of the best movies Disney has made. Selick directs alot of stop motion. James and the Giant Peach was his next movie. Jack Skellington has a cameo as a pirate in it.
The movie doesnt fall short in any way. The characters are well defined. It has a huge fan base and the merchandising tsunami to match that is still going strong to this day.

I don’t feel that “masterfully” is strong enough a word. Kubo’s animation is absolutely and completely breathtaking. And not only is it breathtakingly animated, but from a story standpoint I’d say it’s at least as engaging and elicits as much emotion as “Coco”(which has to be one of Pixar’s top 3 best movies).

If you watch Nick Park's Wallace and Grommitt shorts, they will add up to feature length. 'A Grand Day Out', 'The Wrong Trousers', 'A Close Shave', 'The Curse of the Were Rabbit', and there's also the feature length 'A Matter of Loaf and Death'. You could also try 'Chicken Run', 'Pirates in an Adventure With Scientists', 'Shaun the Sheep Movie, and 'Early Man'.

It bothers me when people say the story is nonexistent and it's about the characters/vibes because I think it's actually a pretty rare moral that what you're good at and simply need a break from doesn't have to be worse than what you're suddenly inspired by one day. A million movies would end with Jack being a Christmastown revolutionary and learning how to coexist with their ways, but this one says, "Nah friend, stay in your own lane, you're good at it" and that's....honestly refreshing. The song numbers and atmosphere are unrivaled as well. People may hate the overexposure the merch has but that's never a reason to hate on anything, this film is among my top 10 animated movies to this day. 🎄💀
Edit: As for another stop motion rec, Mary & Max (2009) pretty please.

Danny Elfman, the composer, songwriter and singing voice of Jack, had a band in the 80s called Oingo Boingo.. imagine these songs but more punk rock and cynical. He dissolved the band in the 90s but he still performs his rock songs and has a recent solo album that's very much his style. And he played Cochella recently... shirtless. Elfman, even in his old age, is really jacked.

I will second recommendations of Wallace and Grommet: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (or Aardman shorts) for a silly British film where it's charming to literally see fingerprints in the clay of the animated characters, as well as Laika Studios productions, particularly Coraline, Paranorman, and, IMO, one of the most visually stunning creations, Kubo and the Two Strings.

Soo many touches with their models such as ears you can see light thru, clothing that wrinkles/waves, and flesh that has a realistic spongieness to it. Where you can press someone's arm with a finger and the skin goes in and springs back out when you remove your finger. Similar to TB's TNBX, almost everything possible was done practically

Tim Burton didn't write any of this movie. He wrote the original poem, and the movie's look is based on a few of his illustrations for the poem. He visited the set only a few times during it's 3 years of production (he was making Batman Returns in England at the time) and had a falling out with Danny Elfman over the songs, which he disliked.

There are rules to animated worlds. There are rules to Christmas stories too. What Sandy Claws never said, but was always understood by him was this: try to stop him at your peril. He can’t even stop himself if he tried. Sandy half-heartedly tried to warn Oogie boogie. Check the tape.
A good movie is good on the surface.

I don’t like giving recommendations because I trust your judgment but if you want to do an 80s retro flashback check out back to school with Rodney Dangerfield. Danny Elfman composed the score, and he also scored peewees big adventure but it’s cool that he actually appears in the movie with his band Oingo Boingo. that scene is classic at this point.

To this day this is the movie I've seen the most times in movie theaters. Saw it like 15 times in the first 3 months it came out. Every weekend I was at the movies watching this. I own this still on VHS (the original copy they released for it) and DVD. I also own the two, surprisingly really good, video games based on this: The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King for Gameboy Advance and The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogies Revenge for PS2 (it also came out for O.G. Xbox). Even though there's metric tons of merchandise I'm grateful they never went overboard with media. 1 classic movie that stands the test of time and 2 great games (ones a prequel the other a sequel to this movie) and then they quit while they were ahead. That's how you keep something like this special.

Ending narration from the soundtrack, though not included in the film:
And finally, everything worked out just fine.
Christmas was saved, though there wasn't much time.
But after that night, things were never the same--
Each holiday now knew the other one's name.
And though that one Christmas things got out of hand,
I'm still rather fond of that skeleton man.
So, many years later I thought I'd drop in,
And there was old Jack still looking quite thin,
With four or five skeleton children at hand
Playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band.
And I asked old Jack, "Do you remember the night
When the sky was so dark and the moon shone so bright?
When a million small children pretending to sleep
Nearly didn't have Christmas at all, so to speak?
And would, if you could, turn that mighty clock back,
To that long, fateful night. Now, think carefully, Jack.
Would you do the whole thing all over again,
Knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then?"
And he smiled, like the old pumpkin king that I knew,
Then turned and asked softly of me, "Wouldn't you?"

"Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it!"
Fun Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination.
Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's (Ken Page) eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack.
Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's (Chris Sarandon/Danny Elfman) blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.

This movie in many ways is like star wars. Its so iconic that no matter what generation watches it, they all love it. Its so iconic that disney has on many occasions taken their haunted mansion ride and turned it into a nightmare before xmas ride. No other movie property has been regarded that highly that they would happily take an iconic attraction and essentially bury its original theme just so they can replace it with another then when the season is done return it to the original. If you want an extra twist on this, they have gotten the original voice cast together to do a concert where they recreate some of the songs from the movie. Here is something that will blow your mind. Peewee herman provided the voice for one of the oogie boogie kids. th-cam.com/video/N7urNTgiw2Y/w-d-xo.html

Edward Scissorhands became a cult classic upon release. One reason being that out of an over a hundred movies career, with many classics,
it was one of Vincent Price's last movies.
I do consider Nightmare a Tim Burton and watch it every Halloween. For stop motion he produced, James and the Giant Peach. Produced the animated 9. Please watch 9.

There is a video on the making of this movie. It's amazing what they did.

Did you know, Halloween and Chirstmas used to be linked in one winter long festival.

Tim Burton wrote the story, but he also drew and design pretty much everything you see on screen.
Having his name at the top of the title is justified.

I would recommend Edward Scissorhands and would also definitely recommend Sleepy Hollow. Both directed by Tim Burton. In a producing role, I would recommend Tim Burton's "9", directed by Shane Acker. A recommended stop motion film is Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr. Fox", original story written by Roald Dahl.

For your next stop-motion genius, check out guillermo del toro’s PINOCCHIO… It’s brilliant!

I went to school for animation and did some stop motion. This was probably animated on the 2s so if it's 24fps the figures has to be posed 12 times per second.

Since you mentioned the frame rate, I feel it worth mentioning that unlike in live-action cinematography, frame rate is a crucial tool in maintaining the pace and feel of animation, and expert animation relies on adjusting the frame rate to match the action onscreen. It's not unusual for frame rates as low as 3-4fps and as high as 60fps to be used in the same film, depending on the requirements moment to moment.
That remains true in all forms of animation, regardless of the underlying medium employed.

Another Selick-directed stop motion feature is Coraline.
Also check out any of Ray Harryhausen’s stop motion work. Clash of the Titans (1981) is a classic.

Another great stop-motion animations? This is a hard task but I try anyway:
Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, The Early Man - all produced by British company Aardman Animations
Corpse Bride (co-directed by Tim Burton)
ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Missing Link - all produced by Laika (another stop-motion animation masters)
Max & Mary - more adult production about depression and loneliness with phenomenal voice acting
Peter & The Wolf - short animation from British & Poland
Fantastic Mr. Fox, Isle of Dogs - both directed by Wes Anderson
I think that's enough. For now.

Even If Tim Burton didn't direct this movie, the whole movie still SCREAM Tim Burton! ;) He was originally gonna direct this movie too, but he was busy with another project. The movie is also based on a short poem that Burton wrote.
The design of Sally is based on Burton's ex Lisa Marie, who has also been in a couple of his movies such as Ed Wood (highly recommend!) and Mars Attacks! Sally is voiced by Catherine O'Hara, Jack is voiced by Chris Sarandon and his singing voice is by Danny Elfman, and the Doctor is voiced by William Hickey.
Henry Selick has done mostly stop animation movies such as James and The Giant Peach (it's also live action), Coraline and Wendell & Wild.

Coraline is a great stop motion movie directed by Henry Selick which will get a lot of recommendations. Fantastic MR Fox and Isle of Dogs by Wes Anderson are both great.
A very great stop motion movie is Mary and Max, which doesn't seem to get the love it deserves.

It's a set so the lighting stays the same, just as it would with real actors. Set up the lights and everything's fine as long as nobody bumps them.
