    "Hey, Buzz! You're flying!"
"This isn't flying, this is falling with style!"
    "To infinity and beyond!"
Fun Fact: This was the first animated film in Oscar history to be nominated for a Best Screenplay Academy Award - Adapted or Original.
Method Animation Fact: The animation team perfected the movement of the toy soldiers by nailing a pair of sneakers to a sheet of wood and trying to walk around with them on.
Stealth References Fact: The toolbox on top of the milk crate that Woody (Tom Hanks) is trapped in is a Binford, the same tool brand that Tim Allen used on his television show Home Improvement (1991). The carpet in Sid's (Erik von Detten) house has the same hexagonal pattern as the carpet in the Overlook Hotel from The Shining (1980).
Animation Shortcuts Fact: Some 3D effects were too complex, or even impossible, to calculate at the time of this film; subtle tricks are used to avoid them. Examples: explosions, thus the viewer doesn't see Combat Carl's demise; hair dynamics, so Andy, Sid, and Molly all have short hair while Andy's mother's hair is always tied back in a simple-to-model pony tail; and flying water droplets, thus the viewer doesn't see any liquid when Woody dunks his burning head into a bowl of cereal.

Besides the fact that Toy Story has an awesome story with great characters and fantastic voice work, this was also the first time that cinema audiences saw an animated movie that was made with computer animation... It was a mind bending experience! I remember sitting in the cinema almost being distracted from the story because my eyes and my brain was trying to figure out how the hell they managed to get that super polished 3D look!
The first three movies all fit together as a unit, and that unit is one of the best movie trilogies ever made.

You nailed it in this reaction. It was so nice to see you enjoying this as an adult and relating to how a child would appreciate it. It definitely speaks to older audiences as well. The Pixar team are excellent storytellers and they had compelling material to work with. Hanks and Allen were perfect, as were the animators who put visuals to the dialogue. The sequels are well worth it.

I went to the cinema see this with the rest of my 'geek squad' - we weren't bothered about the story but were way more interested in the computer graphics and production etc. However, when we left later we were all about the story (and that one of the crew had been a bit of a 'Sid' in his own childhood) and how brilliant it was. I would HIGHLY reccomend watching the others in the series. Great reaction as always.

I was eight years old when Toy Story came out; I saw it over Thanksgiving 1995, with my mom, aunt, and younger brother. I had seen movies in the theater before, but this was the first time I really knew what was going on from beginning to end. I remember my mouth dropping open and mouthing the words "Wow!" when Woody and Buzz flew for the first time. You could say this movie began my love of movies and acting.
Another story: my younger brother and I were both in college when Toy Story 3 came out (I was in my last year, he was two years away from graduating). He's known for being very picky about movies; I'm definitely the more emotional of the two of us. It was a nice brother bonding moment; neither one of us cried during the movie, but we both came close, and it was definitely the most philosophically deep conversation we've ever had about a film. We sat in the driveway of our mom's house and chatted about it for about half an hour.

Something that a lot of younger people miss is the metaphor for how space toys replaced western toys for children beginning with the 1960s space race.
Before the mid-1960s, children played “cowboys and indians”, and there were a lot of TV shows and movies that were westerns.
When the USA started having the Apollo missions, fascination with space became a thing. Children wanted rocket ships instead of cowboy toys. Woody being replaced by Buzz is a metaphor for that.

Toy Story is what made the theatrical animated movie industry as we know it today. It's what put Pixar on the map and inspired competition from Dreamworks Animation and virtually every other animated movie studio in theaters. Pixar's movies were a new standard of quality for over a decade, and the only thing that really bothers me about their rise is that it led to traditional animation's decline in theaters. The sequels were the only Pixar sequels for over 15 years because they wouldn't produce sequels if they felt they couldn't live up to the originals, and in the case of Toy Story 2 and 3, they really do.

Oddly enough, the story premise of toys that come to life when kids aren't around was also done by Jim Henson in a made-for-TV movie in 1986, The Christmas Toy. Of course the two productions are entirely independent, and neither's existence detracts from the other.

Toy Story has held up well over time because it doesn't just depend on technology. The story, characters, acting, and music are all great, so it's still worth watching even though the animation has been surpassed by later films. It's like The Wizard of Oz, which remains a beloved classic even though it was filmed using 1939 technology.
Did you notice that the toys looked more real than the people? Characters like Sid look crude in comparison to Andy and Buzz. I'm sure this was deliberate. It inverts the real world, in which people are real and toys are artificial.

We only had 50 to sell. 30 of those were already pre-ordered and paid for, the owner put on a 40% fee to guarantee you had one before X-Mass. 5 were for staff, without a discount, if we wanted one, and the rest went on the shelf. Which was pointless as in the first 5 minutes of being open they'd all gone. I had one though. And I really wish ebay was around back then as I could have sold it for silly money. One of the worst marketing blunders ever; I hear they've regretted that decision for years.

I both love and hate this movie. The story, the acting, the technology at the time, all extremely impressive. On the reverse side, this success of this movie was pretty much the death of traditional hand drawn animation, which I much prefer. CG is great and all, but it doesn't have that warmth and humanity that hand drawn has. But Pixar almost always puts out quality movies, so I can't hate on it too much. As someone in their mid-40's, I grew up in the heyday of fantastic animation in the 80's.

  • @StCerberusEngel
    @StCerberusEngel ปีที่แล้ว

Honestly, as much as I'd like to credit this movie's plot as being original, there are three instances that preceded it that this movie directly (and possibly indirectly) draws from. One is the 1987 movie The Brave Little Toaster (which I highly recommend watching, btw) and the year before in 1986 there was the Jim Henson TV production, The Christmas Toy (a childhood favorite of mine), which spun off its own series in 1994 called The Secret Life of Toys. That said, being the first fully 3-d animated feature is very much worth noting for Toy Story. And it's still a damn good movie. The second and third are very much worth watching, though I didn't care much for the fourth.

Please review them all. My fav is 3!!! But, 2 is great and 4 is the perfect finale-Keanu is so good in that one. Would love to see your reaction to them all.

We were 18 when the movie came into the cinemas and I went with my friends to see it.
We did not care that it was a kids movie, it was because it was the 1st movie completely animated by computer and we were into gaming and such things and also interested in how the graphics were done.

Watch all three. Ignore the fourth, as it completely nigates the sentiment and message of the third.

I recommend all four. They may not all measure up to the original, but they are all enjoyable.

2 is great, 3 is a masterpiece, 4 is the one that wasn't needed but still enjoyable.

My kids grew up on the Toy Story movies. Even after they grew up, they’d go watch the newest Toy Story. Great memories.
