By the way, I highly recommend every leather worker get a 1 ton press. They are useful for many things and in the US are available for as little as $40 on sale at Harbor Freight. I've modified mine by drilling a hole in the end of the ram, and also drilling the side for a set screw. I can insert traditional leather stamping tools and make quick repetitive stamps, ideal for border work.
Thank you for the idea! I just ordered two of them thanks to you. I do have an idea. With a piece of wood, one can make a wider slot to take in the complete blue rail. That should give the user a little more control. You can still make the center slot and that should be no problem. Also, cutting pieces of long plastic that is the same thickness as the tongue of the letters, will allow for something to push and maintain the letters together while pressing.
I've been searching for a way to press multiple letters at one time, and was coming up empty handed...UNTIL I found your video! Brilliant idea here - thanks so much for sharing this!
Riley Wyatt I got my cake stamp set today. It works really well!! Very happy apart from the 1/4” height. But that’s just personal preference. Going to make a wooden handle to give the arbor press something better to press down on.
Brilliant! Thanks Harry. I am going to look for one of those sets and i already have an idea for making an adjustable fence to line up the block of wood to the edge of the leather for consistency.
What a fantastic find! I wonder what other plastic bits might serve as leather stamps? Might be worth a look at various children's toys like shape blocks and puzzles. I will now be looking at every item I see and thinking if I could use it as a stamp.
What a clever idea, perfect if you don't do a huge amount of letter stamping. I think the key though is the wooden block you made and a good press, you would have problems using a vice, clamps or hammer to make the impression I think, the letters could be damaged by any off-axis forces or shocks.
Wow better than the heat imprint machine👍🏼 Guess I won’t need to spend 1K anymore. But..is there anyway that we could get the gold foil nailed to the embossed letters too? Thanks a bunch.
Hey Harry, noticed you had quite a stack of items on the press besides the leather, letters, and jig. Can you tell us a little more about what you had there and why? (Looked like some cutting boards and wood maybe?). Thanks for another awesome video!
I use my 3d printer to make all sorts of shapes and symbols. I haven't tried it on leather yet, but even if it would break after a couple of times, you could just print a new one...
Cool result with the leather, sir I am having trouble with the inner tube rubber we are rrecycling and wonder if you have thoughts. Thanks in advance!. Looking for just the same results as you found with leather if at all possible.
Nice idea Harry, as always finding an economical way for those of us with less money. However I don't quite understand why you don't get a set for £10 on ebay. I guess they weren't available when you made this video
Hi really because these have depth and are thus suitable for veg tan leather, and because the holder keeps them accurately spaced and in a straight line. Best wishes Harry
@@harryrogers yeah I guess the holder would be an added bonus. I hope you didn't think I was criticising you, I love your videos, they are always very informative👍
Hi Harry, genius idea ! I need to stamp a name on leather pieces for the jaws of a stitching pony. My 2mm veg tan natural leather is dry is and stiff, if after I stamp the leather I apply « Palma oil » balm, will the stamped name disappear ? I’m new to leather craft. Thanks !
This is brilliant Harry. Can I get your opinion on hot press vs cold press on veg tanned leather than has been sealed and dyed? I've been thinking a hot press is the way to go for blind embossing, but this might be the answer I've been looking for at a much lower cost than a Kwikprint for example. Wondering how well the impression this lasted over time. I'm looking to emboss leather pacifier straps for baby with baby name or initials etc. So the leather is relatively small in size and only approx 2mm thick. Appreciate your advice. Trying to weigh up all the pros and cons before investing in machinery. Cheers
Hi This lasts perfectly well...the impression will not be as clear as with brass letters as the plastic is softer on the edges. Perhaps consider a Hex and Hit type set...look at Ian Atkinsons excellent review on TH-cam.
Help! Does anyone know if there's anything like this with lower case cursive letters? I've found the set of these with lower case included, but it's not cursive.
Very brilliant idea! We ordered them from Amazon but when we got them they were on the tiny side, question, how big are each of the letters in the set you have, please.
@@harryrogers Thank you for answering , we didn't know if you would still be monitoring this . Ours are about 4mm , so apparently we bought the wrong ones . Very nice idea though , we watch you on TH-cam all the time. You've always got ways to save people money, Thank you !
A metalworking vice that clamps on to a bench or table. To get extra torque, you could put a length of metal pipe over the tightening handle and get stronger pressure.
Another idea are the cheap BBQ Branding Iron's. There is one for about £6 from china that has metal type the slides in a metal holder and retained by spring clip. The holder is normally screwed onto a handle but as it has a flat aluminium body It should be pressable.
Lily Collett Lilt it really needs to be veg tan...I don't think the faux leather would take an impression unless it's very pliable...perhaps try it on a sample...but I doubt it will work. Regards Harry.
Syed Qayyum my husband routed a block of wood to slide the entire thing in and it hammers just fine I load up the letters and slide it in the block and good to go. Thank you so much!!
I can't thank you enough for this! I've been looking for an alternative stamp tool and then found this!
You are truly a lifesaver, God bless you!
You are so welcome!
I love finding things like this. You have just saved a lot of people a lot of money.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Hi Harry, I watched your video yesterday and immediately ordered a set and it arrives today. A big thank you.
Was on Hex n Hit website last night rubbing my forehead on justifying the cost. Then, I find this.
You sir are brilliant ! Thanks so much for sharing.
Did you get some Dave? Got a set today and just tried them out. They work great!! Very impressed.
That was fantastic!!!! The impression was beautiful.... very creative Harry :)

I was totally stunned to see this actually work. I just bought 6 sets on eBay. Thanks a million.
Would you please send me the link where you bought this set on eBay ?

Brilliant!!!! Love all your content you share with us all. You sir are an inspiration! Thank you from Washington state, USA
I'm impressed (pun not intended... but appreciated) the plastic letter held up. And with how well the stamping worked. Great tip!
Thanks for this I immediately ordered a set off Amazon. Thanks again keep up the good work.
Was about to order an expensive set from Hex n Hit. Will give the cake set a try first. I’m genuinely excited to try it. Thanks Harry.
I would be very interested to see how you go.. I too was about to order the Hex n HIt!
Riley Wyatt I’ll drop a reply as soon as it arrives. Had to order from the US to UAE so will be a week or 2. 👍🏼

Very nice Harry. Your thinking outside the box always amazes me.
OMG! I just found your video while I was thinking about this topic: THANK YOU! I'll give a set of cake stamps a chance too.
A lot of fresh ideas are going to flow freely from this discovery Harry; it's another fascinating video for my brain to mull over.

Hi Harry, What a clever, out of the box thinker you are, well done . Thank you
September 2021 - These are still available on eBay for less than £3.00 + postage. Great idea.
I never would have guessed...Say Harry, I would love for you to make a video comparing your belt leather to Herman Oak and Wickett and Craig...
Great idea, spacing and straight spot on, many thanks.
I have this exact set! How cool. I haven't had a chance to use yet so this is wonderful. Thank you. Great idea with the wood holder.
Excellent! I make custom knives and this looks perfect for customizing sheaths. Thanks!
Thank you this is genius !! I want to make custom knit hats with leather tabs and this will work great

Hi have a look on eBay for BBQ meat branding iron,£7.99 the letters are pot metal you can heat them up for hot stamping
Thanks. I will try it out.

Harry. A 'novice' question: that press, do you use that as wel for nails, rings etc. If yes, how? Second do you need to damp the leather first???
Josh Luijsterburg Hi Josh..yes best to damp the leather first.. .called casing it...no I do not use the press for rings. Regards Harry

I have just managed to get the pastry stamps from Aliexpress a lot easier than the steel stamps I used

Would this work on biothane instead of leather?
Hi Harry, love your videos! Any ideas what I could use instead of a one ton press?!
Worth trying a g clamp and wood sandwich, or a hammer.
A metalworking vice that clamps on to a bench or table. To get extra torque, you could put a length of metal pipe over the tightening handle and get stronger pressure.
Absolutely genius! Very helpful!
Great!
is it possible to do a handprint stamp on leather I have seen this before but not sure how its done
If you don't have a 1 tonne press, do you think a woodwork or metalwork vice might do?
It will have the pressure...alignment may be tricky.
Good idea thanks
Great idea!
Where did you get it from please
Can you get that from any cake decorating place?
Very clever!
I need this how much is cost? Please update
Have you ever used a 3D printed design for stamping
Micheal Donnellan no but good idea...it should work well...using an x carve did..my film on a belt for Optiv shows that.
Another idea are the cheap BBQ Branding Iron's. There is one for about £6 from china that has metal type the slides in a metal holder and retained by spring clip. The holder is normally screwed onto a handle but as it has a flat aluminium body It should be pressable.
Another good suggestion Michael - they should work fine..as do the cheap plastic letters for cookie personalisation.
Thankyou appreciate it
Links below to buy the letters.
i dont have the pressing machine if i use hammer will it be as effective ?
Probably not, but you could make a press out of wood, even an old pallet.
excellent video
Stanley Grant Thanks Stanley
Your wellcome as a upholster I appreciate your videos and they are well explained
What is the size of the word?
I notice a lot of the sets available now are 5mm high, the set I used was a bit larger so best to check with supplier.

I want yo buy the stamping on veg leather. How can i buy it

Hello!
Is it possible for you to make a video with the same stamping tool but try it with a hammer? :)

:) dont wanna waste money to buy it and break it with a hammer :(
Genius!
Would this work on faux leather?
Lily Collett Lilt it really needs to be veg tan...I don't think the faux leather would take an impression unless it's very pliable...perhaps try it on a sample...but I doubt it will work. Regards Harry.

How does it work with chrome tanned and if I were to hammer it down ?
hammering you risk it jumping between strikes so pressing definitely would be the preferred route.
Syed Qayyum my husband routed a block of wood to slide the entire thing in and it hammers just fine I load up the letters and slide it in the block and good to go. Thank you so much!!
@@3929Cindy Hi, can share a image show to set letters in a line in a wooden set
If a don't have a presser what else can I use?
Dianela Garcia - you could certainly accomplish it with scrap wood and C clamps or a bench vise. Experiment with scrap.
