For anyone who may be at a loss. If you mess up a foil stamp (misaligned, wrong color, not hot enough, upside down) foil will dissolve in acetone!!!!! It will leave behind an imprint depending on the heat and pressure applied, but acetone, or acetone like solutions will strip the foil away! BE CAREFUL THOUGH, acetone will also strip away other finishes and paint, so I'd test it on a scrap first before diving in lol.

I've been hot foil imprinting for 20+ years. This machine is fine if you're not changing the Type setup often. Otherwise, that is a high maintenance chase. Good tip about repetitive imprinting. I use antique Letterpress with a Howard Imprinter. Mine doesn't have this fancy temperature gauge, that's a nice feature. Leather is a trial and error process like you say. I have found foil printing leather works best using a 2 step imprint. First imprint no foil to make the impression in the leather, then add foil and reimprint. Just make sure your leather is secure so it doesn't move between the iron process and the foil. Also, when you put a large Die into the Imprinter, give it a little time to completely heat up. Being able to spelling backwards is a bonus! 😁 Cheers!
good tip didn't think about pre pressing before foil stamping, how do you keep your leather from not moving though?
@@TrailBoundco I use a Clamp - I used to do Bibles. The textured leather covers, it helped to pre press (iron) prior to foil. I have clamps with furniture feet pads glued to them as not to mar the leather.
If I do the foil stamp on crocodile leather what temperature should I get and any note when doing it ?
Do you use anything to adhere the foil to the leather when using a letter press?

I've looked at how to emboss on vegetable tanned belting leather over previously embossed leather. Pretty hard to do, but the gold foil would almost make previously embossed leather invisible. If I shipped a vintage Hartmann leather bag to you, how much wold you charge to gold emboss three initials?

Would this work on faux leather as I'm making a charmed book of shadows replica and embossing is a must as tried just sticking just sticking a mdf triquetra to it and looked awful or would heat and faux leather just completely melt or ruin the tools because faux leather is pretty much plastic

No we don't get the leather moist. before we emboss!
Trying to figure out if it's possible to emboss or stamp foil into stuff with resin printed stamps.
I just don't know if what I'm trying to do absolutely requires metal stamps and fancy equipment and if I'm making one offs or only a handful of stamps with custom designs, that'd get expensive and unreasonable to make/have someone make metal stamps of those.
Have you heard anything in the scene about people 3d printing stamps for embossing and foil stamping?
(or even epoxy stamps if you make a mold and do it that way too)?

It can be done on both chrome tanned leather as well as vegetable tanned leather!

We haven't ever sprayed it with anything to preserve it but we haven't had issues on any of our items that have been gold leafed.

Yes, just slightly more pressure :)
Chrome only can be with pressure, the hot foil works fine in leather and plastics.

I think it's great! From what I understand, for someone who was already getting the elite pricing, it won't affect you at all. But for anyone who is just getting started is now able to walk in and get the same pricing as everyone else. I don't believe you'll need to do anything with your account. If you signed up for it recently you might be able to get a refund though
