For our 4th year anniversary of daily uploads we went to instagram to ask you what questions you had about being a professional leather worker. You had some great, deep questions that we were happy to answer as we went about our daily work making some leather pieces. Hopefully these leather questions will help you make the decision to take the next steps in your leather career, or not! keeping leather craft as a hobby is, in our opinion, the most enjoyable way to experience leather crafting :)

I definitely enjoy this sort of content. I personally dig the whole not showing your face. I can play your videos while doing something else ( at the moment sewing up a coozie) and not feel as if I'm missing something. How that make sense I'm not sure but alas it's the internet and on the internet sense is not a prerequisite! :)

I must confess I've been stalking your page for the tools, but can hear it will take some time before I can get them!
The answer is 42! It's a reference to Douglas Adams' book Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I love your videos and appreciate the laidback style and easygoing manner tied in with excellent explanation and visuals. I like the way your videos are framed, it's very clear and focused on the work being done and I appreciate that. I ordered some of your bottle openers for family for gifts and truly appreciate the quality and design of them - so I am very much looking forward to your new tools coming soon.
I thought the fact that you two were chatting while working on a project was lovely! It kinda felt like hanging out with some friends in the shop.
I am very happy with the video content you produce. I learn a ton. Keeping your business status quo is great. Comfortable. My leather work will never be a business. It will always remain a hobby. For me, asking for money and have a time constraint changes the essence of the leather work. It becomes work and not enjoyable. I am very content with playing with leather. Better tools. Definitely. Started with really bad edge bevelers. Got some Barry King edgers. They are fine. Bought myself one Palasanto edge beveler. Oh my is this one perfect. It is a joy to use. Now I look forward to edge beveling and burnishing.
You remind me of Pocket83, love the type of faceless knowledgeable videos about stuff I don't actually need for any skills I have/don't have, but it's soothing to hear someone with a practical knowledge talk about something they love
Sir, from one artist to another...you are an artist. You create with your hands, you use your creativity to figure out problems you might encounter, and even punching holes for stitching you visualize. Not many can do what you in particular do. You are building and creating, which of itself is an artform. Inspiration is creativity. And Art is usually pleasing to the eye.
I believe you’ve done so well because you’re a phenomenal leather worker and seem like a really nice guy. Thank you for your content. I know I have learned a lot from watching you through my leather craft journey

I'm 62. I have had depression and anxiety since I was about 9. I've found I was always unhappy seeking happiness. So, I've learned to be content with contentment.

Absolutely agree with your views on a sewing machine. I really think hand sewing is true handmade but making shoulder tote bag straps…. I shifted to a sewing machine for that work. Thanks to you both for sharing your talent and passion.

An interesting and refreshing perspective with a wealth of good tips thrown in. I was intrigued by what you were saying about overseas labor and manufacturing without actually saying anything about overseas labor and manufacturing.
I love this video. And good for you regarding your privacy. I would do the same thing. Regarding a sewing machine that is always frustrating, I finally bought myself a great quality machine- a Juki- and what a joy it is to use. No more frustrations with bobbins and things always getting tangled. It is a simple but high quality machine. I think it was certainly a get what you pay for thing. I admire the hand sewing you do and it is very beautiful. My old hands just can't handle it anymore! Keep up the great videos. I have learned so much!

What she said makes perfect sense. What you are jealous of typically represents something you really want but don’t believe you can have. So if you pursue it as a jealousy you may be inclined to go at it a bit harder! Brilliant! Cheers mates!!

I like what she said about follow your jealousies. Specifically when you are trying to figure out what kind of projects. I got back into leather working because I wanted a leather pad for my desk and the quality and price of the ones available on Amazon where more then what I knew I could make my hand for better quality… ironically still haven’t ever made that desk pad in the past year
What’s nice about those punches, 6:48 is like strap, hole or other punches, it gives you a finished looking edge.

QUESTION: I've a +/- 50 yr old leather briefcase (which my dad made for himself, since he produced orthopedic shoes) which is dry, stiff, has dry rotted machine-made double stitching, and is in need of dyeing. SO- Dye first, then condition, or vice versa?

Funny, first video I saw (had) your face in it, and i had no clue you made amazing bags that look like (that) lol. Im sure that is entirely inverted from the norm! Im interested in leather work just for around the house and for gifts, not as a business, but great channel! I have watched a few of your Videos and have learned a lot. I am a woodworker, so thinking about making some forms like you had in the leather tray/bowl video... Anyways, cheers!
I agree with everything said about spending on tools and leather etc except the practising on strip's etc that don't make anything. I need to feel I'm being productive so practised on making every smoker I knew a lighter sleeve. I made sleeves and holder and pouches for each of my tools. Theres so much satisfaction and reward when you spend 20 mins of practice on a usable item. I still have them now and some make me giggle at how bad they were at the time. But if I just cut and sewed strip's that went to the bin not only was I a touch disheartened by my original lack of skill, it felt like it was a waste of time as it went to the bin.
If you're a knife person, make each knife a sheath. Cover your phone, make basic bowls, pin cushions, straps to nail to a board for tool holders etc. These are so rudimentary in terms of skill but still really useful no matter how imperfect. Keep your passion going with little rewarding jobs that get you practising. These things keep you keen to make and practice with all your spare time.
I'm with you on the privacy thing. Im the type that wouldn't handle fame well. Thankfully I don't have to worry about it haha

33:27 That's true, there are people who are best in designing but not as good in making stuff from their own project, people like you who are good at both and like me and my father. We are good at implementing technical assumptions resulting from the project and we can change it if necessary, but we're simply almost unable to design
To install that latch/buckle you were hammering on, you could make a jig and use a press instead of a hammer.
Did not expect that you watch bedo's man that's cool. I watch him because I want to make my own shoes and draw inspiration from some of his flare and how the colors play with each other... Then make a bag lol

At the 22:20 mark, did you glue the two pieces to veg tan leather or was that some other type of backing? And would you have used the nylon backing if you weren't trying to hide the backside of the closures? I always learn something new every time I watch one of your videos!

I was watching this video think that brass handle knife is just what I'm looking for. Every craft knife I've used is either to thin, not heavy, plastic to fiddly and then you pulled that box out. You should sell these immediately.

I get what she meant by follow your jealousy. Like... Strive to be whatever it is out there that you envy. If youre a luthier and you love Martin guitars, strive to be as good or better than Martin. Look at what they do and try to replicate. Along the way you'll find what makes you unique

Where do you get that nylon adhesive liner from?
Are those brass handle x-acto handles available to purchase?
Is there a good starter kit for stamping? A lot of the 20pc amazon/ebay specials look like 90% of the included stamps are... kinda useless? Like I don't think I'd be using a butterfly stamp very much? It surprises me that Tandy or Weaver don't have a cheap basic set for beveling/edge decorating?
A bit late to the Q & A party, but I have a question that maybe someone can answer...
I have no experience in leatherwork, but am planning to at least try it out once the job situation gets better...but, I have noticed in all videos I've watched (from several different makers) that if they have a large sheet of leather, and need to cut out a large piece (say, 8" x 11"), they will mark the leather sheet _several inches_ from the edge, and proceed to cut out the piece, leaving a substantial amount of "scrap" leather.
It's kind of like cutting out a shape in the middle of a piece of paper...it seems to be an inefficient use of material.
Why is this so common? Is there a reason for it?
