Going through Parris Island in 1969 was the most transformative experience of my life. I was the platoon guide and was very proud to have made PFC at graduation. It may sound like a cliché but Staff Sargent Flood made a boy into a man and I have been forever grateful.
I’m 41. I can still remember my DI’s names. Ssgt Walker , Sgt Harrison and Cpl Rodriguez. I was 17 when I joined. These men made an everlasting impression on my life, and I thank them for it. I’ll pass there teachings to my son.
Leaves a lasting impression doesn't it? I'll be 64 this year and I enlisted in the Air Force 30 years ago. I was 24 when I went to basic. We had several T.I.s. The first was SSgt. Roerig. Then there was TSgt. McCoy, SSgt. Brooks, then finally SSgt. Markeiwitcz. Our squadron superintendant was SMSgt Furey.
Big thing to remember is that the vast majority of Drill Instructors really do care. I was in the Army, not Marines, but I still remember running into one of my Drill Sergeants seven years later on the line. I'd fast-tracked promotions and was a Staff Sergeant by then. I remember he saw my rank and just started smiling ear-to-ear, like a proud father who saw his son graduate. We had a chance to catch up for an hour or so before our convoys had to roll (we ran into each other at FOB Hammer). He grabbed a quick picture to share with my other Drill Sergeants and within a week I'd been emailed by bother of them wanting to congratulate me and catch up on my career. Not all Drills are like this, but a lot of them are. As a former NCO, I get it. When I look at my two guys that have stayed in the military and are now well past where I was in rank (one is now a SFC and the other a MSG), I feel so much pride. Not in myself so much, but in them and everything they've done in the Army. I remember them as scared privates, newly arrived to their first unit and fresh out of Basic. Now they are senior NCO's, confidently running a platoon and the operations section for a cavalry squadron. It's as close to being a father as you can get without actually having a kid.
WOW, I remember this. Went in November 1969, 3rd Battalion, 3077 at P.I. Stepped off the bus and D.I. said we had died and gone to HELL and man I believed him but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Semper Fi Marines.
As a non military man, I have to say I've seen DI's in a whole different light. Most of you get emotionally attached to your recruits and due to that you take a HEART INTEREST not just a "it's my job" interest in making them the best they can be. I don't like the whole idea of stressing that you are making "killing machines" which I've heard frequently. The part of an American soldier that makes him/her stand out is not that they are a killing machine. But that they are SOLDIERS. Living, breathing, feeling human beings that choose to do what can be the worst thing in the world to protect their brothers and their countrymen. I don't know what it is. I've never had an inclination to be a soldier (in man's army anyway) but it's like somebody has been cutting onions when I think about our soldiers. I got a heart for you guys. I love you guys. I'm tearing as I'm typing. Damn it. To the DI's that care about their recruits and aren't just sadistic bastards who couldn't care less and just get their rocks off being mean; which there have been in the past and I hope ONLY the past; thank you. Thank you. From my heart. Yeah you got a job to do but I see your heart.
As a Retired Marine, with Combat action and former DI I will tell you that if the stress isn't there most likely they're not gonna make in battle. This isn't the boy scouts. You should research those that survived in War. You'll find that the majority of them were Marines....by the way, this is the Marines in which was the subject of this conversation and not the Army though I respect them as well.
I'm an Army veteran. But if I had to go in today I would definitely go into the Marines. Not just because of the sense of brotherhood but because of the professionalism that not only the DI's offer but that the corps offers
submyn it's changed in basic training. When I went in there were a lot of Vietnam veterans who were Drills. Back then they were called Drill sergeant. There's also a vast difference in uniform appearance. I can't tell you what it's like at permanent party posts

I'm ex Navy from a Search and Rescue squadron so I spent a lot of time with the Marines during my cruises on LHA Helicopter Carriers. I always give Marines a hard time, but that's the standard relationship between the Marines and Navy. Regardless of that I have nothing but respect for anyone who goes through what they go through to become a Marine. You are the top tier, and nobody can ever take that away from you. All Marines earn the right to have that confidence in themselves, and the knowledge of knowing they went through hell to earn the title of Marine. Nothing but respect guys, our country is always safer because of you.
I was there for Christmas 1989. They said USMC stood for U Suckas Missed Christmas lol It snowed 6 inches and we woke up to a white Christmas. ❤ Semper Fi!

I run/bike with my friend David Goggins. He’s in my head when I do these things, but he’s my life drill instructor that helped me find my own motivation that doesn’t rely on others. I don’t miss circling up and waiting for those slow fuckers lol. 👍

One of the reasons there so hard on them is cause the job is hard! These guys are getting them ready training and preparing them for war trying to create the closest possible combat simulation possible and that's the same with the Navy SEALs and their training which yeah the Marines have the Crucible! lack of food, sleep deprivation etc. SEALs have Hellweek in which they get only 4 hrs of sleep but run 200 miles throughout the whole thing etc. Sleep Deprivation but then there's a lot more training after that for the SEAL candidates!! But yeah both the Drill Instructors and SEAL Instructors are really hard on there recruits!
So much respect for these men and women and the transformation they've gone through. Thank you to everyone that's ever served, is serving, and our future military personnel. Your sacrifices will forever be honored.
Best choice one of my nephews ever made; go to a juvie school, or get in shape and do early enlistment at 17. Grandpa got him a personal trainer, a Marine veteran, and the deal was he shows every morning, on time, leaves his attitude that got him into trouble on the shelf, and gives it his all. (Late or bad attitude even once, Grandpa calls the court and he goes to juvie.) He made it every day, joined Marines on a waiver, turned 18 a week after graduation. Did two tours in Iraq, got business degree, owns five gyms with his wife, has six kids who won’t be falling into their Dad’s mistakes. (And if any do, it’ll be nipped in the bud immediately!)
My dad served Vietnam and retired as E-6 Staff Sargent. My Uncle Retired from Vietnam and Deasert Storm has E-8 Master Sargent. My Cousin was in the Air Force still alive and he wore his father boats to war. My Great Aunt Rachel Served world War 2. My Grandfather served. I was married in the army twice. 2 of my X- brother inlaw were in the Marines. Still alive. I have a strong military back ground and I am proud.

First off I am a Marine, and watching this like puts me in like a trance. I don't know what it is, well yea I do know what is it but it's a feeling not spoken. Something other Marine's I hope can relate with. I long to be in the pits with rounds snapping over my head and the smell of the hot parade deck. Standing in line at the chow hall, Senior drill instructor time. Some things you can and never will relive and you only have the moment. But the memories of those moments can be so pride inspiring and emotional. God damn Semper Fidelis my brothers. Once a Marine, always a Marine.
I'm 45 now, married with two young sons. I wish I could say "if I knew then what I know now I would have joined the service" but then I likely wouldn't have met my wife and had my two boys. But you get where I'm going. That being said my sons are 17 months and 10 years. I would be incredibly proud of them if they chose a life in the service. Thank you to all that have served and that will serve. I love my country and I get emotional watching these videos, especially the graduation day parts. I am extremely proud of these people. Well done folks....well done! Now a quick question, the one DI mentions age ranges from 17 to 35. What is the oldest recruit that actually made it? I know by 35 I was way out of shape, hell now at 45 I would be dead the first hour. LOL.
The military has a cut off age. I believe, and don't quote me, that it's around 36-37. However anything in the military can be waived. So depends on circumstances.
When my father joined in '69, he said he HATED having to run before he went in. By the end of basic, he said that even though him and his team had the option to ride in vehicles to get somewhere, they CHOSE to run instead. The Corps makes men out of kids.
I spent a 24 hour duty with that Sgt Morales, now GySgt Morales. Really solid, commanding, yet hilarious and chill staff NCO. I just randomly stumbled on this video and that hoarse, hispanic-accent popped right out. Told me all the stories of his time in the drill field and also on deployment. Guy is super motivated, calls marines "warfighter" and "killer", but pulls it off. Solid marine.
It was so nice to see my oldest son graduate from our Country's Basic Training a week and 1/2 ago. He was so proud of his accomplishments and I was even prouder that he followed in my footsteps and went into a life with the Military. It is such an amazing feeling to mold a young soldier and see them progress and excel in their careers.

That was my Senior DI SSGT Bragg. When i was in Quebec Co 3rd Batallion PLT3052 we were the first of Qeubec Co for Afghanistan war.. Quebec Co was not used since Vietnam War until we came in and it was brought back in 2008
Joined the Marine Corps 19 years ago. Senior was SSgt Bryant, kill hats were Sgt. Longoria, Sgt Leon, and Sgt Flores. Ran into both Leon and Flores in Camp Fallujah, they were stoked I had become an 0321. I was surprised they remembered me, that was almost 2 years after I graduated boot camp. Even talked to my recruiter in Fallujah, after he went back to the fleet, was cool to have a normal conversation with all of those guys.
I joined 20 years ago ..graduated in 2004 February. I was Bravo company plt 1009. I was 0311. Deployed to Iraq Fallujah in 2006. My unit was 1/25 4th mar div. Charlie company we were under regimental combat team 5 in Fallujah. Maybe we crossed path lol similar time frames you never know 😂
I remember during boot, one of the kill hats was pushing a recruit against a tree because that recruit and another DI told the senior that the kill hat had punched in the gut and so another kill hat ran up, sacked his ass and laid him out.
What's so Ironic is after bootcamp I got out to the fleet and there was this perception that you have to obey orders yet think for yourself. To this day I can't figure out how you can obey orders yet think for yourself. Although I was labeled as a man I didn't feel like one. In fact i felt like a grown kid still under his mother's house. After I got out of the Navy i began growing up as a civilian now I'm a small business owner. Now I'm in command with absolute power. Now I feel like a man.

I just graduated boot camp a couple weeks ago and I got the idea that you're supposed to obey exact orders drilled into me so much that it's tough transitioning into the real Navy where they don't explain everything down to the T and you have to make those assumptions for yourself

I had pneumonia on swim qual day. It was hard as hell to complete, but I did it. Followed up with a 103.2 temp and trip to the ER with two full IV bags. Now at 37, I sneeze and it’s 3 days of bed rest.
I went to Parris Island in October ,1966. Back then we were beaten and it was always back at the barracks so civilians couldn't witness this. Training was very tough. Went to Vietnamin April 1967, got 2 purple hearts and served at Hoi an, Quang Tri Province, con thien , Hue city during TET., Operation Pegasus with the 1st battalion, 1st marines. Boot camp prepared us for combat. Compared to real combat, boot camp was not so bad. The tough bootcamp training is the reason I survived 13 months in Vietnam. Once a Marine always a Marine

Such a great tradition recruits to Marines via there DI's. Men they will remember the rest of there lives. Men they will remember, imatate, tell stories about but most of all respect. My uncle was a marine in the 80’s as a Lance corporal. He was deployed to panama and only fought for 2 weeks until he was caught in a booby trap and medically discharged. He was a recon sniper. He dosent talk about the corps much which is disappointing because I am very interested in the marine corps.
I miss laying in prone position at 500 yard line, lining up the front aperture with the rear, and watch the front aperture move up and down with each breath - a shot is fired, never knew I pulled it. Thats how you get expert marksmanship.
While I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp 1972 they would beat you up once they had your trust. This happened in 2nd faze theres 3 fazes. The way I see it , there is no reason to beat on the recruits. You can teach them without hitting them. We had a guys named (Hillbilly guy Last name) Beathum and they beat him up all the time. At one point he wasn't with us but he would show up at the mess hall to eat , it's a long story. Once at the rifle range after I shot I came into the barracks and our two DI's were beating the shit out of him on the floor. My first reaction was to help him and I took one step to help but I had to stop because my mind told me they would put the shit on me. In the end they got what they deserved and I wish I could tell the whole story but I ended up (in my eyes) saving the whole platoon and if we were in war I would have been there for my Platoon also. I wish I could find Beathum to tell him how I knew what they done and how I saved him. Platoon 3007 Parris Island.
Doing nothing is not what happened and its not in me! When they tried to beat me up the shit came down! They got removed from the Platoon. At one point a Lieutenant from our company called me to the front and told me I was to make one stripe from bootcamp ( PFC) But nine days before graduation that all ended after the DI with the black glove tried to beat me up for nothing.

During my days in basic Drill Sergeants and these Marine DIs were the same, I remember when an Army DS could beat the shit out of a private for being stupid and things changed over there years, I decided E-8 MSG was enough to retire 29 years.

I'm ex Navy from a Search and Rescue squadron so I spent a lot of time with the Marines during my cruises on LHA Helicopter Carriers. I always give Marines a hard time, but that's the standard relationship between the Marines and Navy. Regardless of that I have nothing but respect for anyone who goes through what they go through to become a Marine. You are the top tier, and nobody can ever take that away from you. All Marines earn the right to have that confidence in themselves, and the knowledge of knowing they went through hell to earn the title of Marine. Nothing but respect guys, our country is always safer because of you.

One of the reasons there so hard on them is cause the job is hard! These guys are getting them ready training and preparing them for war trying to create the closest possible combat simulation possible and that's the same with the Navy SEALs and their training which yeah the Marines have the Crucible! lack of food, sleep deprivation etc.
SEALs have Hellweek in which they get only 4 hrs of sleep but run 200 miles throughout the whole thing etc. Sleep Deprivation but then there's a lot more training after that for the SEAL candidates!! But yeah both the Drill Instructors and SEAL Instructors are really hard on there recruits!
So much respect for these men and women and the transformation they've gone through. Thank you to everyone that's ever served, is serving, and our future military personnel. Your sacrifices will forever be honored.
Best choice one of my nephews ever made; go to a juvie school, or get in shape and do early enlistment at 17. Grandpa got him a personal trainer, a Marine veteran, and the deal was he shows every morning, on time, leaves his attitude that got him into trouble on the shelf, and gives it his all. (Late or bad attitude even once, Grandpa calls the court and he goes to juvie.) He made it every day, joined Marines on a waiver, turned 18 a week after graduation. Did two tours in Iraq, got business degree, owns five gyms with his wife, has six kids who won’t be falling into their Dad’s mistakes. (And if any do, it’ll be nipped in the bud immediately!)
My dad served Vietnam and retired as E-6 Staff Sargent. My Uncle Retired from Vietnam and Deasert Storm has E-8 Master Sargent. My Cousin was in the Air Force still alive and he wore his father boats to war. My Great Aunt Rachel Served world War 2. My Grandfather served. I was married in the army twice. 2 of my X- brother inlaw were in the Marines. Still alive. I have a strong military back ground and I am proud.
My nephew went to Parris Island for his training eight years ago. This past week he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sargeant (E-6).

First off I am a Marine, and watching this like puts me in like a trance. I don't know what it is, well yea I do know what is it but it's a feeling not spoken. Something other Marine's I hope can relate with. I long to be in the pits with rounds snapping over my head and the smell of the hot parade deck. Standing in line at the chow hall, Senior drill instructor time. Some things you can and never will relive and you only have the moment. But the memories of those moments can be so pride inspiring and emotional. God damn Semper Fidelis my brothers. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

I'm 45 now, married with two young sons. I wish I could say "if I knew then what I know now I would have joined the service" but then I likely wouldn't have met my wife and had my two boys. But you get where I'm going. That being said my sons are 17 months and 10 years. I would be incredibly proud of them if they chose a life in the service. Thank you to all that have served and that will serve. I love my country and I get emotional watching these videos, especially the graduation day parts. I am extremely proud of these people. Well done folks....well done!
Now a quick question, the one DI mentions age ranges from 17 to 35. What is the oldest recruit that actually made it? I know by 35 I was way out of shape, hell now at 45 I would be dead the first hour. LOL.
The military has a cut off age. I believe, and don't quote me, that it's around 36-37. However anything in the military can be waived. So depends on circumstances.
Cutoff for the Marine Corps is 28 to join.
back in the day in 1968 I asked my recruiter what is boot camp like, he said , A KICK IN THE HEAD. he nailed it!
When my father joined in '69, he said he HATED having to run before he went in. By the end of basic, he said that even though him and his team had the option to ride in vehicles to get somewhere, they CHOSE to run instead. The Corps makes men out of kids.
I spent a 24 hour duty with that Sgt Morales, now GySgt Morales. Really solid, commanding, yet hilarious and chill staff NCO. I just randomly stumbled on this video and that hoarse, hispanic-accent popped right out. Told me all the stories of his time in the drill field and also on deployment. Guy is super motivated, calls marines "warfighter" and "killer", but pulls it off. Solid marine.

FACT: DI with no doubt change lives
It was so nice to see my oldest son graduate from our Country's Basic Training a week and 1/2 ago. He was so proud of his accomplishments and I was even prouder that he followed in my footsteps and went into a life with the Military. It is such an amazing feeling to mold a young soldier and see them progress and excel in their careers.
As I look at these videos I appreciate what my drill sergeants gave to me for successful BCT.

I would not trade my Senior Drill Instructor for the world, SSgt. Moch was the best, 9 May 1977 graduation day my father, my little brother, and my uncle that was in 1/7 on the CANEL, got to meet my greatest Mentor. I "made it", as SSgt Moch said, 3 years in 2nd Bn. 7th Marines 1st Mar Div. But I'll never forget Platoon 3037, and graduation day.

That was my Senior DI SSGT Bragg. When i was in Quebec Co 3rd Batallion PLT3052 we were the first of Qeubec Co for Afghanistan war.. Quebec Co was not used since Vietnam War until we came in and it was brought back in 2008
Joined the Marine Corps 19 years ago. Senior was SSgt Bryant, kill hats were Sgt. Longoria, Sgt Leon, and Sgt Flores. Ran into both Leon and Flores in Camp Fallujah, they were stoked I had become an 0321. I was surprised they remembered me, that was almost 2 years after I graduated boot camp. Even talked to my recruiter in Fallujah, after he went back to the fleet, was cool to have a normal conversation with all of those guys.
I joined 20 years ago ..graduated in 2004 February. I was Bravo company plt 1009. I was 0311. Deployed to Iraq Fallujah in 2006. My unit was 1/25 4th mar div. Charlie company we were under regimental combat team 5 in Fallujah. Maybe we crossed path lol similar time frames you never know 😂

I remember during boot, one of the kill hats was pushing a recruit against a tree because that recruit and another DI told the senior that the kill hat had punched in the gut and so another kill hat ran up, sacked his ass and laid him out.

Watching these videos again after going through bootcamp and mct it’s so surreal and crazy to think I was there a couple months ago
What's so Ironic is after bootcamp I got out to the fleet and there was this perception that you have to obey orders yet think for yourself. To this day I can't figure out how you can obey orders yet think for yourself. Although I was labeled as a man I didn't feel like one. In fact i felt like a grown kid still under his mother's house. After I got out of the Navy i began growing up as a civilian now I'm a small business owner. Now I'm in command with absolute power. Now I feel like a man.

I went to Parris Island in October ,1966. Back then we were beaten and it was always back at the barracks so civilians couldn't witness this. Training was very tough. Went to Vietnamin April 1967, got 2 purple hearts and served at Hoi an, Quang Tri Province, con thien , Hue city during TET., Operation Pegasus with the 1st battalion, 1st marines. Boot camp prepared us for combat. Compared to real combat, boot camp was not so bad. The tough bootcamp training is the reason I survived 13 months in Vietnam. Once a Marine always a Marine

My uncle was a marine in the 80’s as a Lance corporal. He was deployed to panama and only fought for 2 weeks until he was caught in a booby trap and medically discharged. He was a recon sniper. He dosent talk about the corps much which is disappointing because I am very interested in the marine corps.

While I was in Marine Corps Boot Camp 1972 they would beat you up once they had your trust. This happened in 2nd faze theres 3 fazes.
The way I see it , there is no reason to beat on the recruits. You can teach them without hitting them.
We had a guys named (Hillbilly guy Last name) Beathum and they beat him up all the time. At one point he wasn't with us but he would show up at the mess hall to eat , it's a long story.
Once at the rifle range after I shot I came into the barracks and our two DI's were beating the shit out of him on the floor. My first reaction was to help him and I took one step
to help but I had to stop because my mind told me they would put the shit on me.
In the end they got what they deserved and I wish I could tell the whole story but I ended up (in my eyes) saving the whole platoon and if we were in war I would have been there for my
Platoon also.
I wish I could find Beathum to tell him how I knew what they done and how I saved him. Platoon 3007 Parris Island.
Doing nothing is not what happened and its not in me! When they tried to beat me up the shit came down!
They got removed from the Platoon. At one point a Lieutenant from our company called me to the front and told me I was to make one stripe from bootcamp ( PFC)
But nine days before graduation that all ended after the DI with the black glove tried to beat me up for nothing.

During my days in basic Drill Sergeants and these Marine DIs were the same, I remember when an Army DS could beat the shit out of a private for being stupid and things changed over there years, I decided E-8 MSG was enough to retire 29 years.
