  • Vintage Drums can be a bit of a trap for collectors, always trying to capture a particular sound, and spending far too much in the process.
In this video I talk a little bit as an excuse to fill most of my video with me playing drums..
Old Tama and Yamaha drums rule!

Dude, that cordia Tama set is so rad. I've got a buddy with one who wants me to film with it. I gotta make that happen after hearing how good your kit sounds!

Cheers mate, they're really great drums, ey!
I've got pretty old heads on them, but they're easy enough to get sounding good with how they're mounted.
On the bass drum is a tone killer..

@@THHDReviews Sometimes, I feel like there's something special about old heads on old drums - something you just can't replicate with the new stuff. I think you captured that magic!

We'll have to wait and see if it's for real this time!
I've even seen a few new concert toms over the last couple of years! Haha

if I had a nickel for every Australian drummer who makes hilarious drumming videos while also being nerds about vintage gear, and who are entertaining simultaneously... id have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened twice.

      Thanks a lot!
We don't get the large range of great drums that other countries end up with, but we love what we've got!

I chuckle when I think about the rack tom arms race of the 80s. Companies trying to take the concept of bigger, heavier toms further than everyone else, from power toms (10x12, etc.) to Tama's power plus or whatever they called it (11x12), to Sonor and Pearl's Custom Z series with their super-heavy, square-sized shells (12x12). It became an ergonomic nightmare.
Then it happened again, albeit on a much smaller scale, in the other direction. Some time after DW introduced FAST sizes (slightly shorter 9x12, etc. toms, but longer 18x22 etc. bass drums), and traditional tom sizes became popular again, Tama pushed it further with their Hyper-Drive sizes - 7x12 etc. toms, and ridiculous 20x22 etc. bass drums). DW went even shorter with their Short Stack toms, although I'm unsure of where it fits in the timeline. Thankfully it didn't go any further than that.

It's funny how companies get forced to adapt in that way!
I thought the Hyper-Drives were ugly, and the more standard sizes work for most people.. luckily I'm tall enough to not be inconvenienced by larger sizes though! Haha

Maybe it'll get its own video at some point!
I've still gotta try a couple more different heads to see what the perfect sound is for it..

That was my first kit which I paid for...Parents bought my first beginner kit (CB700's)
I miss the BOOM of those!

With a bit of hard work you'd get the beginner kit sounding alright..
I had to buy my first kit, but I chose alright with a Gretch Catalina! Haha

AMAZING power toms! What are the sizes? 13/15/18? I pieced together some 80s recording customs, and they're worth it, 100%! You know I had to get that 14x3.5 Yamaha brass snare to go with it!

    • @THHDReviews
      @THHDReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Close, 12/14x14/18!
The 14 is a pretty rare floor tom that I just use as a rack, as the bloke I bought it off had a mix and match set without a 14x13.. that's why the mount is at the bottom of the drum! Haha
I've played a few recording custom kits, and they do live up to the hype, but they're going up in price every year, I'd get over $500aud for my snare these days..

      @@THHDReviews it ain't a power tom unless it's a square size! LMAO
