I grew up watching animal from the muppets and knew drums was my instrument. Then I saw Metallica during the black album tour at 12 years old. I fell in love with Metallica watching Lars at that kit. That’s the kit.

No, that would have been Peart's red kit or "The Weapon."
For me it was this kit, Lars Load and Reload kit, Mike Portnoy LTE kit, Mike Portnoys monster kits(1996-2009), and Neil Pearts Moving Pictures kit.

I agree but man his '96-'97 kit sounded thunderous live! I like some qualities of it better in some ways but overall, yeah the White/Black Granstar was epic!

This is the kit that placed Tama on the map for good. Well over 300 shows of the biggest heavy album of all time tour played all over the world to millions of fans by the biggest heavy band of all time during when they were biggest in their own career. I can't imagine a more legendary status for a drum kit.
This is the kit that lars played that got me into the glorious art of drumming. Id' love to own this kit.

As a kid in the 80’s I got up at 4 am, 7 days a week and delivered newspapers. Saved enough to buy a 5-piece Tama Artstar. Incredible set of drums. I wish I still had them today!
Time to start delivering newspapers again!

I had a chance to buy one of these replicas a few years back. Its price was just a bit too high to justify a museum piece with my limited budget. Would have been nice though!
That is absolutely killer! Probably my favourite ever "iconic" kit, and replicated in the sizes I'd have done it in. Also, I was not expecting to hear The Wildhearts in this video - one of my all-time favourite bands!

I recorded one of these at a studio back in 92. I think it’s still the best drum sound I’ve ever got.
This kit is iconic af, I saw the thumbnail and immediately knew who’s kit it was.
I don't even play drums, but this IS the kit. Iconic, and sounds bad ass!

Always been a Tama fan I've tried many kits but Tama drums just have a rock sound that can't be replicated.
I agree. The only thing that comes close IMO is Mapex.

Love the set! I owned a Tama Artstar set. Full Tama cage 11 piece . 7thru22in toms ,2x24 bases and hand hammered z series cymbals. PIANO white with chrome trim, and a full set of Impact road cases!! And one ex wife= no more Artstars!! But I do have a new 9 piece set of Yamahammers now though. Keep rocking from Arkansas...

That was me. 13yrs old ‘89 at the Meadowlands in Jersey. The And Justice Tour. The Cult opened up for Metallica. Total neck paralysis, for 3 days 😂😂😂😊

his legendary kit Lars used on tour, never had one note recorded on the Black album with it. Infact, the only Tama drum was a snare. The rest of the drums were Gretsch. But this is one amazing live drum kit. built for arena rock.

Reallt?! That’s telling because a friend of mine had a badass Gretsch kit from the late 70’s and they sound amazing in the studios. Better than the Tama Bobinga something toms, so this big band he was teaching for used his toms on their album. Makes me want a Gretsch kit.

Fairy certain his mounted tom sizes were 10,11,13,15. I was obsessed back then and bought an identical sized set (different color, different series).
They were 10,12,14,16 and 2 18” floors

Great oldshool looking drums. Thanks for keeping the spirit alive 🤘🏻🥁🤘🏻 In my drums I can't reach setting up the floor toms that far behind. This proves that every instrument is a personalized extension of the musician.
Yeah, well this was a Tama offering/endorsement... I doubt Lars spent much time on the 18x16 in reality. Certainly not in this era of his recordings. And TBH, most drummers don't either. Much is for show. But that's OK too!

First off, AWESOME kit. Even with minimal mic-ing (assuming just a pair of over heads or maybe the camera mic) it sounds fantastic. Also, Kudos for includung The Wildhearts (Suckerpunch) Haven't heard that song in a LONG time... killer band. Should have been huge!

@@KLB1080 I used to have a Granstar myself. It’s was in Nile blue, which for all intents and purposes is aqua marine or turquoise. I loved the kit, but I grew a bit bored of the dark sound and was always gravitated to the brightness of maple. So I sold it and got a Starclassic maple, which I adore. But always think back to the Granstar days and wished I’d kept it.
So this kit of yours, it’s a modified Granstar, custom spray job and hardware finish or did you get it like that?
I have an Artstar 2 as I also love maple shells (check my other vids to see them in action).
This kit was a Granstar in Gun Metal Grey, I found all the other orphan toms overtime. The shells are wrapped in Gloss white and powder coated hardware.
@@KLB1080 ah dude, Artstar II was the kit I wanted. But they’d stopped making them when I came for a change. So rare, hardly ever see them on eBay. Would be interested to know the difference in sound between them and the Starclassic maple. I know people will likely say the resonance/sustain but Simon Phillips kit sounds the same sound on a Star Maple as it did when he was using an Artstar II. At least to my ears anyway, maybe I need to have a closer listen.

So nice to hear hear non-square toms again - as in 12" x 12" 13" x 13", yada yada. I miss hearing toms with real depth, and an 18" floor tom, too. :) I think I'm going to hunt down a kit like this for my studio now.

Seeing this kit in my early teens was like the most awesome thing imaginable! I owned a white Premier APK at the time that was literally half the size of this and I always wanted to paint my rims black. I've only gotten as far as getting black response heads because it would never be this beast. So when I saw Lars playing it again in Lux I was hoping he'd bring it back in full glory on stage. He didn't. Not yet anyway... So cool that you have this!
Lars is a jazz drummer now. You'll never see him behind a big kit ever again.

But actually for the black album they used a different set in the studio, I believe it was a Grestch kit
@@fake1909 are you sure? This is definitely the kit that Lars used in this time period. And I never remember Lars using a Gretsch, I only remember him using Tama. Actually you're right I just research that he did use a 1980 Gretsch, but the snare was a Tama Bell brass snare,I think the way it was produced and the way that Bob Rock produced it made the sound great
That’s right, they spent several weeks working to get that amazing huge sound from the Gretsch kit
@@-marino2782 Gretsch bass drums and floor toms, Tama snare drum. Before that, he used a Ludwig Black Beauty instead.
