Very useful video for any aspiring virtual pilot, certainly a video I would have found useful had I not spent already a huge amount of time refining my keybinds over a long period (and still am...). And even then, I am always interested to hear what considerations other pilots have regarding keybinding, so thanks for sharing this.
oh man, the first thing on getting back into il-2 after the intial "yay, my computer can run this game!" is crying so hard because of the key mapping and learning the key bindings=D
Didn't watch the whole video but I thought it was worth mentioning that if you want to brawl on the servers it helps if you can control throttle, flaps, and elevator trim at the same time rapidly.
VoiceAttack can also be used to assign HOTAS buttons as modifiers. Ultimately it only outputs key presses, so you just have to make sure IL2 is set up to receive the key, not the button. Can also handle long-press, double-tap, etc.
I didn't like it. I use voice activation on discord and I would need to mute myself or it drives my mates nuts. Another thing is that I record gameplay. All my commands would end up in the recording. But I can see how this is of use for many
@@SheriffsSimShack I wasn't actually talking about the voice commands, just the built-in button / axis mapping functionality in VA. It's pretty powerful. But aside from that, all of your issues are fairly easily resolved: Assign a mute toggle key in the Discord bindings. Then create a VA command that sends that key when you press, and later release a dedicated HOTAS button down to give a voice command. You can also make that same command enable listening for VA voice commands, if you sometimes get false triggers (I don't). And have it mute your voice channel to your video recording software at the same time. But I actually do the opposite, basically just prefer to use PTT for Discord and have VA mute my voice output to the video recording (OBS) when I'm not actually talking to a human. I don't even think twice about having to push-to-talk, since it fits into the context of the combat aviation sim experience accurately. For fun, I also added a brief squelch noise in my ear whenever I push/release the PTT button, so I know it's working.

Great video for a newbie to set up. The idea of using Xpadder to allow multiple assignments to a button is great. How do you set up Xpadder to allow Ctrl- Shift- Alt- assignments?
Question: I saw you don't mess with the curves in the game, but do you have the joystick curves adjusted at all with the VKB software? I'm thinking about resetting mine to default, but it'll definitely take some adjustment to get used to how responsive everything is.

the fact that i cant have a modifier on one of my joystick buttons is what really holds people down without a headtracking or vr my performance in dcs compared to il2 just purely for the reason that i can hold a botton and move my head up down and around all using my hat compared to not being able to have it on the hat is the only reason i don't play it every day
What do you use to bind modifiers to your hotas? I was looking at the one in the video named xpadder but there's like 500 different ones up for grabs and I'm not sure which one you use or I should trust.
What are good key bindings for oil/water radiator/cowl controls? One thing I really hate about il2 is that things that *should* have an axis don't, ie flaps don't have an axis (so you can't bind to an extra lever) and I can't seem to find a way to bind an extra "other" key as a shift-key, ie a pinky switch + button or pinky switch plus movement of axis == new command. I have 6 throttle levers, I used center 2 for left/right engine, on the left I used one lever for combined mixture, right side is my combined "RPM"/prop pitch lever. I have 2 levers I can use left over, and I was hoping to use them for flaps, but il2 you can't do that (really sad), and I was also hoping for like speed-brakes or oil/water radiator settings combined onto a single lever, but that doesn't seem possible either. That leaves me with one other choice, and its basically use VoiceAttack to control button presses for a certain amount of seconds to get an approximate setting, which isn't ideal.
@@Munky332 Yeah, you are right there is no axis as of yet. You could get around with with programms like the discussed x padder. However this wont work with flaps which deploy in stages or fully. A lever isnt a good bind for all flaps. With some more xpadder trickerly you can make the joysticks buttons behave like shift etc, like i did.
I can’t get any of the pilot zoom controls to work that our mapped my HOTAS when I’m using TrackIR. Also a lot of my HOTAS buttons that I mapped to other controls don’t work in the sim.
hello their i just wanted too ask if you know how too swap the mouse views(8way) too the hat switch on my gladiator nxt,(i want too use the mouse for the use it was made for (CURSOR)soo i can start the planes from cold n dark.the "hat switch" on my gladiator nxt works for external views (il2sturmovik)but i cant get it too work in cockpit views(as with hat gladiator nxt....thank you....

I wish they had a sort of 'practice/keybind' flying mode in which you could experiment with settings while in flight instead of having to reload constantly. Getting the keybindings where one wants them without VR or headtracking is quite daunting for newbies like me. I really want to enjoy this game, but it's frustrating loading up a flight only to find out the settings are not what you wanted. All I have is a Thrustmaster HOTAS X.Flight and it makes me really want to upgrade just for the sake of having switches and headtracking to simplify just flying the plane and not devoting entire keys to view controls.

Hi Sherriff, could you please help me. When I bind my throttle on main menu it works great on the meter, but when I fly the RPMs are fluctuating with little or no response from me. When I go into settings and check the binding response the gauge pointer is at just over halfway and will not move or rebind unless I go into main menu and it all starts again. It has been working ok till yesterday ! Appreciate any help at all Thanks
I tried xpadder with the same throttle as you have, but I couldn't figure out how to stop the button from sending out its original signal and the left shift signal at the same time, so I am having trouble binding the aileron keybinds. How did you set up your xpadder profile?
I fear I dont understand really: Maybe try to explain again? why do you want to bind the aileron to your throttle? thats a horrible idea. You can configure deactivation/activation of buttons with dead zones in xpadder.

With xpadder running, when I try to bind let's say the left aileron trim, xpadder as I understand it will convert a button press into left shift. However what seems to happen is that when I press the button on the throttle, the throttle sends out the original button signal e.g. B_13 and then xpadder sends out Left Shift. IL-2 sees this and thinks, "He wants to bind left aileron trim to B_13 + Left Shift" when in reality I want it to be bound Left Shift + Left Hat. Does the dead zone setting fix this?How do I configure the dead zone of buttons? In the assignments menu when I click on the button in the profile?

I want to bind modifier button (orange buttons on throttle) as "LShift" and "LCtrl", but when I am setting up key binding in game (IL2:BoS), and I press orange button (as modifier) IL-2 sees this as "LShift + joy2_b1" and then I have no chance to bind button what I want... For some reason I can remap the tailwheel button but it doesn't work in game. In the FW 190A the tailwheel look stays on my Y axis of my joystick no matter what I set as an alternative button. Has someone an idea what is happening?
the button only applies to aircraft with a lever/or button for the tailwheel. The tailwheel in the real Fw 190 was also locked and unlocked by pulling the stick back. Some for the P-51 (the other way around, pushing the stick)
Between IL2 and DCS we could have one decent simulator. But no, we are to be tortured forever. You would think after over 20 years they could make clicking the X more than luck of the draw. Its absurd that it takes 3 tries to click the X in the exact correct place to get a window to close. That you must use 3rd party sw for programming the joystick shows clearly how these devs treat their customers. Plenty of new copies of the same AC though. Let have another BF109 or FW190, 9 of them isn't enough yet. Talk about EZ MONEY FOR NOTHING.

Assigning trim to the Throttle ministick is a great solution.
I use all of the throttle sticks for engine management i think its better there.

This all seems pretty logical, and very helpful. It's a shame you can't do a joystick button shift key. ED can do that and it's old as the hills.

there is a axis assigments for the flaps.
@@SheriffsSimShack Where? I don't have one, I only have "flaps up, flaps down" as separate key commands, default to F and LShift+F.

What version of IL 2-Sturmovik do you have, I have IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. and it doesn't have those menus, so adjusting is impossib

Why do you have to reload? Case of user error. Press esc while flying and setup your keys while you are flying.

Spawn yourself on the ground or air depending what you plan to bind.
