This video helped out a lot. I needed a video that was a little more in-depth like DCS World but not 30+ minutes long and going thru EVERY single command when some are useless. Thank you !!
I've had IL2 for over a year and never took to the time to figure this stuff out so i stuck to DCS. thank you for this, feels like i can finally jump in.
I have a HOSAS setup and just got pedals. Honestly I don't think they add as much as I thought they would to Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous, so I started getting into the world of DCS and IL-2, and now I'm leaning into actual flight sims with gusto...BUT...as frustrating and seemingly overwhelming as both of those space games are in their keybinds, they absoluteyl pale in comparison to DCS and IL-2. I consider myself somewhat intelligent, or at least I have a pulse and can get food into my mouth most of the time, but phuking around with IL-2 repeatedly just pissed me off more and more :) Couldn't figure out why my Virpil rudder pedal toe breaks didn't register only to find after several sessions of troubleshooting that it's the phuking YAK that has the problem, not my hardware :)
We're on the same sine wave. When I got liberation your vids were there exactly on time. I decided to get back into IL-2 after a two year break and realized I forgot how to set it up again this video was there. Coming from DCS what I wish IL2 had was modifiers. I have two buttons right at my thumb on the throttle I use as modifiers in DCS which can turn a single hat into three. IL2 especially for VR is a nightmare trying to bind everything functional and avoiding the keyboard. With my setup I don't think it's even possible.
Thanks for the video. Just getting back into this game and this was helpful. They have added so much content since I last played that I am waiting for the dlc to go on sale again. Would really love to see the Pacific Theater in this game.
Thanks Torny, this games always throws me around everytime I come back to it. Hopefully the custom binds that are supposed to come makes this better. We can only hope 😄
This keyboard binding experience seems SHOCKINGLY bad. My flying buddies (on DCS) talked me into picking this up for some relaxed flying when compared to DCS. I wasn't prepared for the keybind fiasco that is IL-2. Having said that, THANK YOU for taking the time to net out what's needed - especially relating it to the Warthog. While I don't have a warthog HOTAS, your usage of DMS/CMS/BOAT etc. helps me visualize the process. Is there a way to associate modifier keys with the joystick commands like we can in DCS? I have modifier keys on my HOTAS because I don't have enough buttons. Based on what I've seen, I think the answer in NO.
This game really needs a feature that automatically highlights your keybind when you press the button on your hotas. It's impossible to know wtf joy0 button 8 is by memory. Can't believe they haven't added this yet.
Bc they would have to do this for all joysticks differently and it wouldn’t make sense for them even msg light sim doesn’t have them all but if they did a few that wouldn’t be too hard
Yep, agree totally. I am making key bind notes on paper for myself, not really 21th century solution, isn't it? :) On the other side: At least these are general settings for all of the planes, not like DCS, separated for every different airframes. :|
This would be super easy for them to do. Doesn’t matter how many joysticks there are. All that IL-2 needs to do is when it receives a signal from the joystick or other type of control, it highlights it in IL-2 control settings if it’s already bound to something.
Complete newb to IL-2 and flight sims in general, but LONG time space sim player. First thing I do in any game with a buttload of keybinds is create a profile "freshstart" or something similar that makes all the basic changes to the default settings before going in and tweaking. In the case of your example, I started by deleting everything in the mouse and joystick columns before creating freshstart and then started tweaking re your guide. This is so if I get to a point where something is phuked (lol) and I can't find it, I can revert to this and star over without having to get the controls back to a starting point again. VERY glad I found this guide, btw and thanks. I was ready to find someone on one of the IL2 discords and offer to venmo them to hold my dumbass hand! I still might...
fkn BRILLIANT ty so much friend ... .i bought ace combat7 and found out i have a love for combat flight sims....and now here i am lol months later...in 6 more months ill prob have a $500 set up maybe hopefully or not
They seem to have made this game as obtuse as possible. getting planes trimmed so they don't just want to roll over left all the time has probably put more people off than the complexity of DCS ever did.
Thank you for your time, great video mate! I was in a fence for a refund. Coming from DCS, flying in VR and having to reach the keyboard (no clickable cockpit either!) is a pain. If you say this game is worth it, I’ll stay :)
I was having a hell of a time setting my radiators, watched this, went into settings and had to barely move the switch for it it register, then barely the other way(boat switch on TM Warthog throttle) I was doing it to slow to get it to register open/close
You spoke about the camera zoom which is usually bound to the slider on the warthog throttle. I’ve never been able to get it to work in either this game or DCS, any idea why? Is it supposed to zoom inside the cockpit or outside as well? Excuse my ignorance but I’m new to flight sim
I use the zoom in slow and zoom out slow keybind for my zoom. the zoom keybind only works for inside of the cockpit. If you want to zoom in on stuff in external view you can either mouse wheel or press and hold Right control and then press numpad / & * to zoom in and out
@@TorniQuetHD I forgot to mention I’m in VR which appears to make some of the buttons act different? I’m also getting confused with rudder trim, ailerons and elevators. I’m using Hotas warthog joystick and throttle, I’ve got the elevator and ruder trim mapped to the hat switch I think it’s called on my joystick, where do I map the ailerons??
One thing I've noticed about IL-2 keybinds that I haven't noticed anywhere else is that there seems to be a couple of seconds before the game registers the button/axis/whatever you want to set. For instance, if I want to set pitch, normally I'd click on the binding to set, then pull backward and push forwards. I noticed that it doesn't see the backward but it does the forward. It does this with just about anything that has a positive and negative setting. To get around this, I found that clicking on the keybind to set it, and waiting a couple of seconds after the input window comes up before moving anything works. If I do that in the above-mentioned example, it sees movements as I intend to use them. Weird...

I don’t think it will be as smooth and powerful compared to trackIR but you can set it up to do that in trackIR yes. Would require a very steady head though when zoomed in by leaning forward
I'm looking forward to playing IL2 and I appreciate some of the pitfalls I'll be encountering setting up the game. Could you recommend a Rig that will handle IL2 and DCS without glitches. Thanks good video
Why don’t you just unlock your 2 throttles on the Warthog and use your right throttle to control the throttle and use your left throttle to control mixture?

I just got this game today and spent an hour trying to get the throttle to work. You see where yours wants an axis for the throttle? Mine doesn't have that. It wants a button combination for throttle. It wants an axis for the mixture and the propeller, but not the throttle. Is there some way to change this? I have a Winwing Orion 2 HOTAS that I use for all my flight/space sims so I know it works perfectly. But for some reason the game wants to use buttons for the throttle. What am I missing?

Looking for a little help on this issue I've got, so ran through the set up and every time I go to move off the aircraft pulls to the right when taxiing and it has a tendency to pull right slightly in the air too. I know my kit is fine in terms of calibration as I don't experience this issue in DCS but for whatever reason IL-2 doesn't want to play fair on this one. I'm running a TM Warthog HOTAS and TM Pedals. Part of me is wondering if I've not set something quite right on the pedals but I'm at a bit of a loss to be honest.
It could just be the torque from the engine that is causing the drift… you have to offset engine torque with rudder pedals on takeoff and in flight so that may be the issue you’re having? If the aircraft has rudder trim you can trim it out to make it fly straight and level 👍🏻
