    Hi Gabe greetings from London Great Britain. Thank you for the new videos you are posting. I remember in the late 70s Early 80s seeing my first discus in a shop in Victoria. London
    They were 4 Tefe green discus if I remember correctly. They were about £300 pounds each. They were dinner plate size They were amazing I had never seen such fine fish before. And that memory has never left me. Please keep up the hard work you and your team are doing in this Discus part of the hobby. Sadly I know something of what you have said about family members not being involved in the hobby but we all choose our paths in life and like you I respect there choices.

    I would consider Discus, if they were juveniles. I would love to see them grow out. I keep a community tank at 78 Degrees. If I would slowly raise the temperature to about 81 Degrees I would raise them. So, how young do you sell your juveniles?

    Hey Gabe! I have two discus (a Snow White and a Cobalt blue) in a 55 gallon tank that just spawned for the first time! We were totally taken by surprise and your videos have been so helpful with preparing us to care for the babies. The babies are still just in the wiggling stage and I’m hoping they make it. We’re doing everything you’ve recommended so far. My question is, if we’re able to raise up some of them to maturity, would it be safe for us to reintroduce 2-3 of the babies back into the tank with the parents once they’re grown? What are your thoughts? Thank you so much for all your valuable advice!

Now the female is completely bright again and leaves the work to the buck. He wants to give the little ones away from time to time, she lets them get close to her for a moment and shakes them off again when she wants to. I think it's too much for the buck and I'm worried that they'll eat the little ones. Should I try to raise the little ones? What can I do. Lg

    Question: If I'm looking to grow out a group of discus in hopes of finding a breeding pair, should i avoid buying a group of siblings because of the inbreeding? I know it's not generally a good idea to get discus from several different sources, but if i get a bunch the same size and strain from one breeder they're probably siblings, right?

    • @JackWattleyDiscus

      Depends on who you get them from. Large breeders tend to have many pairs of the same strain and if smart they keep different bloodlines.

  • @Paul-cq2we
    @Paul-cq2we 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Gabe,
    I have a quick question for you which I'm sure will not get an answer. You have very nice-looking discus. I'm sure many people purchase from you quality discus in which they are going to breed and possibly enter competitions. I'm just wondering, are you recording genetics and if so how many generations back are you recording? I'm sure you do being this is the only logical way of improving the quality of any species. You can't adjust the genetics until you have a record of them in the beginning! I'm pretty sure when Jack Wattley was breeding his discus he almost would've certainly had to use recorded genetics in his processing to get such good-looking fish. Anyway I was just wondering on what you do. Some people do not do this so I wonder what they are doing to improve their fish? Great looking fish!

    • @JackWattleyDiscus
      @JackWattleyDiscus  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Genetics is best studied when coming up with new strains. It's done to acquire the best characteristics of two separate strains to mutate them into one. since I'm not coming out with any new strains or creating a new strains I'm not really documenting anyting other than not to go beyond f3. Once this happens we either out cross to a different lineage within the same strain or we swap out fish with other reputable breeders so that they have our line and now we have theirs. Hope this helps to answer your question.

      @@JackWattleyDiscus okay a couple more questions please. Not trying to be a smartass I'm going to purchase fish from you in the near future because I want to do an experiment on them and yours are the best looking fish I can find for this! Anyway in this video when you took the fish or the babies and just put them in a different tank with other babies from different parents there's no way you could safely record genetics anymore unless you do DNA testing and I doubt anyone is going to do that! LOL. Anyway I did this testing with Labrador Retrievers from regular stock and after three generations they were already competing in hunting competitions. I'm sure it applies across the board to different species but I want to see how. Anyway when you produce your F2 why is it that you don't introduce another parent so you have two individuals to concentrate on? Of course they have to be extremely good-looking and what you want to move forward. Also do this again after the babies grow if you like what you see. After this I just kept online breeding back to the lines of dogs that had the traits I desired until eventually I had basically created a strain on my own. By doing this it's actually is much easier and faster to get the traits you're looking for and can achieve it in fewer generations. 8 years ago one of my dogs from just average stock won the National Bird-Dog Challenge for that year in which when I started this the two dogs had no hunting aptitude at all other than they liked the water, which makes them basically about the same as a fish when it come to hunting! Do you know did Jack ever engage in line breeding like I so briefly explained without getting into too much detail? Anyway sorry this was so long and I'll be in touch with you soon!

      @@Paul-cq2we I have 5-6 different lineages of almost every strain I breed.
