I just love all your ideas, I’m 57, and our kids are in their 30’s and no where near being married yet with kids, so i am not a grand ma, but these ideas I will use for me and my hubby...80’s movie nights, more reading, water feature to install in my flower garden and just taking the time to sit down and enjoy the summer days and nights listening to old jazz music. Life is a gift and I will take the time to enjoy mine in 2022!

When i was a kid in 90s new zealand our school receptionist would read roald dahl books over the school intercom every day throughout winter. We had to lie down on pillows and imagine the story. She had the most magical voice and has always stuck with me. She passed away recently. Reading aloud is so special for kids

My childhood of the sixties during summers sounds much like yours of the eighties: outdoors playing group games with all the neighbor kids, water games with the sprinkler and hose (what are pools!!??), parents largely absent (working), and boredom followed by creative bursts: build a fort, go inside (lovely box unit AC) and start a monoply or canasta tournament. Roller skate or ride bikes, even! We enjoyed not only the freedom but also the responsibility to entertain ourselves and structure our own time🙀

Yep. 80s kid here. I don’t ever remember my mom telling us to go outside. We just were always outside. I remember her having to make us come in to take showers/baths at the end of the day. We didn’t even have all the fun Walmart toys to keep us entertained but we did have 4 wheelers and many acres to ride on. Totally different life then what it is today!

I love tip #7. I would like to add, if you didn’t have a fond childhood maybe focus on creating the childhood that you wished you had. This tip combo is perfect for me because I’m working on taking care of my inner child while also creating new memories with my family. Thank you for these tips! ❤️

One Summer memory that "stuck" was the Summer my younger sister & I watched Grease 2 pretty much every time that it was on. But by the 13th time, my dad couldn't take it anymore & he unplugged the TV or the cable box 😂😂😂...one of the two!! Good times!!

60s kid here but always enjoyed catching fire flies (lightning bugs) at night, butterflies during the day and then looking them up and learning about them. Did you know fire flies have different flashing codes that are actually a way of finding a mate? Who knew!

We live in a dead end next to a playground. So I put sun screen on the kids, open the garden gate... and every now and then bring water and popsicles outside.
Oh, and sidewalk chalk. Also important! They can draw themselfs a whole world with them.

Loved this! My kids are screen addicts, it's so hard to pull them away. I didn't have an "ideal" childhood and I'm breaking a cycle here, so I try to do a lot of togetherness time. My son received a Nintendo Switch for his birthday and we ordered extra controllers and the board game edition bundles and we'll spend an hour or so before bedtime playing things like Monopoly or Risk. There are games my husband and I remember from when we were younger and the kids get their screen fix and we're all together laughing and making really simple and fun memories, it's a win win win.

For moms of boys I would encourage them to learn how to play their boys favorite video game. When my 3 boys were6, 8 and 10 they were 100% about Minecraft and my husband learned to play. I quickly realized that I was going to be totally left out if I was unwilling to try, so I learned and 10 years later we still play! 🥰

I am an 80s kid too. I loved this video. When I was younger I went to a friends house and we did the whole I’m bored thing so the mum said that we all had to write down on a piece of paper all the things that we like to do at each others house’s. She said that we could never go to her and say we’re bored again as we have a whole jar of things to do. Even now that we’re in our 40s we still talk about that jar and all the things that we did as kids to have fun.

We are a family of voracious readers and I have JUST come upon a book called Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield. It's over 100 years old and such a good book about a pampered 9 yr old girl who has a change of circumstances and learns to be responsible, independent, makes friends, and becomes happy! I'm reading this aloud to my girls and we really like it!

I was a child in the late 90s/early 00s and had an amazing childhood. My mom was a stay at home mom, so we would go swimming at our local lake multiple times a week, spent lots of time with my cousins, played in the neighborhood with all the neighborhood kids. I’ve never gone to a summer camp or had extracurricular activities in the summer. We just played and it was the best time

  • @Naedlj

Oh my goodness! I’m an 80s kid and I remember going to church lock ins. And when we would get up the next morning the adults would take one of those huge rolls of trash bags and roll it down the hill, place a few hay bails at the bottom and have a water hose and Dawn dish soap. And we would slide down the hill. It was a BLAST! We would be covered in scrapes and bruises and plastic burn and grass burn but we didn’t care!

We had a public pool with a life guard- I don’t remember anyone drowning or the life guard ever even getting in the pool. My mom would take us and sit and read by the pool. When we were older we would ride our bikes and go by ourselves. Miss that world. I give my kid the freedom I can but it’s just not the same where I feel comfortable with her having that sort of freedom.

Just came across the awesome doll house we spent hours making as preteens. Made from shoe boxes, cloth scrap, paper and toothpicks and beads. It was so cool I'm 34 and still have it. We also spent countless hours making our own paper dolls....period ones in ballgowns and modern day ones in all the cool clothes we wished we had. We also had large scraps of cloth from my mom's work (think like shear drapes and silk table clothes) that we dress up in and trapes around the lawn with the neighbors pretending to be fairies or royalty. Old pots and pans outdoors to make all sorts of stews and meals from the weeds and ro KS and pinecone. I don't know when children stop playing imaginatively, but I feel like we for sure did through our preteen years and younger teen years.

I love all of your videos, Angie, but this one was one of my very favorites!! I was born in ‘78, and I loved the 80’s summers! I say this as my oldest son is taking a homeschool high school speech class for two weeks, and my oldest daughter is in competitive dance company and has dance intensives all this week. My younger son is going to church camp for a few days at the end of the month, and my youngest daughter was gifted a four-day dance camp for her birthday. All 4 of my children will be going out of town to my in-laws’ for a 5-day grandma camp. I really want to keep things simple in between these activities. I’m currently lying in bed suffering from a 3-day migraine (hormones, yay!🙄), and I so badly want to feel well, so I can read to my children and work on a family project together. I really want to make another attempt at a vegetable garden, but starting now in the Houston, TX heat is probably not a great idea! Thank you for making and sharing this video!! God bless your family... and your summer!☀️❤️

I was laughing out loud a lot during this video! Sooooo agree on letting kids be bored and telling them you’d have an idea if they bring it up 😀
Love how you said you are this little crazy that your kids don’t know what to expect 🤣
Thanks for the idea of letting your kids work out chores on their own and putting the initial there, that’s an awesome idea.
One new thing we came up with lately and want to encourage even more throughout the summer is having “buddy time”. We assign always one older child to one younger for about 45 minutes (we have 6 between 0-9). That way I have time to focus on something important to me while we see how it encourages sibling relationships.

  • @sandywilliamson4435
    @sandywilliamson4435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I do the same thing when my kids even think of throwing out the “B” word (BORED)!!!🤣 That’s why they’ve each only said it once!! I love what you’re doing with the chores...that’s a great idea, and I’m going to use it! Thank you for sharing! I’ve tried several different chore systems, and they’ve all had some success, but I have changed it multiple times to try to find, “the one”. Now, I just tweak the current one we’re using to make sure it’s age appropriate.

Angela as much as I love the whole "80's summer" thing, the main difference between now and then is the fact that most parents have to work full time. The economy is night and day since 30 years ago. It is just not possible to have 6 weeks off, we cannot work from home, hence the holiday clubs. Nowadays most people cannot afford a garden kids can stay outside all day long in, people are lucky to have any green space at all. I feel guilty I will never be able to replicate anything like the sort of childhood my kids have but of course I will try in any way I can.

Appliance stores will usually give away the big ones for free. Inside or outside. My kids loved this all summer. They built and redesigned them over and over. Pirate ship, grocery store, the only limit is their imagination.

Anyone else’s dad and uncles live in those super short OP pro corduroy shorts? I grew up in Orange County and those shorts were good for all occasions in the summer. Skate boarding? OP pro shorts are short and don’t hinder your movement. Tanning? OP pro shorts were tiny. Going body surfing? Good, they dry fast. Let’s bring the OP pro shorts back!!

I was born in the late 70s but still consider myself an 80s kid because that's what I remember, that's when my childhood was formed... there is absolutely NO TIME like the 80s, and even the 90s... ahhh! Such a simple time, but we WERE kids, after all. I love this video concept, can we have more 1980s style videos? lol Throwback to lots of cigarette smoke and endless amounts of Full House and The Goonies on TV!

Fun frozen treats: frozen bananas or grapes, popsicles made from fruit juice or pudding, and ice cream sandwiches made from cookies and ice cream.
