  • Big News! We bought a new truck, well not new but new to us. In doing research on this truck we found that the biggest problem is the dreaded SPARK PLUGS. There were great service records on the carfax report for this truck but we didn't see anywhere that the spark plugs had been replaced... so after 6 days of owning this truck, Josh changed the spark plugs.
It can be intimidating but in this video, you will see that the average guy with average tools can get this done. Don't be scared.

I feel jipt! I was hoping to compare my struggle with the #5 against yours. I've done the task 3 times before and this time I think I've not tightened the #5 correctly and also had the PCV hose break on me. That was a $177.00 mistake! Anyway, great video! I do apply anti sieze and dialectic grease to mine, which by the way I am 3rd owner 2004 V10 6.8. Had it for 7 years now. Mileage was 169,000 when I bought it, it's now at 224,000. No major issues at all, best truck ever if you just maintain, change oil every 5k miles, and don't drive it like a race car!

If your ignition coils were original then they would have a yellow sticker on top with the Motorcraft logo. These are replacement Motorcraft coils so they were changed fairly recently. I would say the spark plugs were done at the same time in your case. Just changed my coils a bit ago and come to find out we hadn't changed them since we got the Ex in 2000. The coils were manufactured in 1997!

When I saw the mullet I knew you you where the real deal. I gotta do mine soon on a 99 as I’m getting close to 150k. The V10 is a great motor just bad on gas. Don’t ever sell it because v10s are starting to follow the price trends of diesels and keep going up.

There seems to be so much conflicting information on this engine. I’m looking at a motorhome with the 6.8. I’ve scoured over rv forums and found a post from a very experienced mechanic and he says definitely no anti seize but 16 ft lbs max. Blow out the holes and spray penetrant in and back out partially and spray again and wait several hours. After this change your oil. This is just too many potential issues so now I’m looking for rv with the 8.1. Thanks for a great video

Thanks for the informative video. I just bought a Class C RV with the 6.8 so it’s nice to see how much work goes into this job compared to a 5.4.
They also sell affordable magnetic spark plug sockets. I paid around $20 on Amazon for a pack of three different sizes.

How many miles on the truck? Just curious. I recently bought a 2000 F350 with the V10. 190k. From my friend who was the first owner. He took care of it mechanically for about 2/3 of its time with him but it’s been neglected over the past 5-8 years. Though not driven much during that time. It sat abandoned in a field for the last two years. I got it running and changed oil and have been cleaning and replacing parts as I go. I am concerned about the spark plugs. I’m personally willing to bring it to someone familiar with these engines. Just haven’t found them yet. Maybe I’ll try what you did. I do like this truck a lot despite the gas mileage. I see it as a big useful tool.

It honestly wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be! Good luck.

I have a 2003 class A motorhome I love this engine especially the exhaust note while idling, V10 pulls like a tractor but the spark plugs haunt me though I'M leary to mess them. I like the idea of using PB Blaster first, I'd like to know the torque specs. Great vidio.

What attachments did you end up using for the back passenger spark plug? I'm debating doing this myself or not. Just like you, the internet got me a bit worried about it, but it looks fairly doable except for that back passenger one.

Beautiful truck...Don't let it go, because you will never be able to replace it. Did you use anti-seize, and what torque value did you use when you tightened the plugs?

    • @fixingorflipping
      @fixingorflipping  ปีที่แล้ว

I read online someone saying the TSB from Ford said NO anti-seize and I think it was 26-28ft lbs.

I noticed the same thing when i cleaned my throttle body. There was some what looked to be oil and carbon buildup on the intake manifold.
When taking the throttle body apart, I saw it was oily inside. Well, my truck has a k&n from the previous owner, which those air filters require oil. Im not a particular fan of k&n and will be going back to a paper filter.
Its an educated guess on my part that thats the sweating you and I are seeing. I could be wrong.

I'd like to amend my guess and say it's from the Pcv system. Definitely had some oil residue and it connects right into the throttle body.

Have you ever had the threads come out with the plugs?
