  • Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and a look at what is probably going to be my favourite plastic kit of the year - Baron's War foot knights by Wargames Atlantic.
    I was looking for a range of knights for a Warlords of Erehwon knight warband and these looked ideal. However, I was so impressed with them, I think I'm also going to have to start a Baron's War project! Wargames Atlantic are releasing a series of plastic kits for the Baron's War and I can certainly see them being just as good as this one.
    I've finished painting 10 of the knights and thought it would be good to show just how I have painted them and also to show just what you get on the sprue, as it is a really fantastic kit with lots of variation and character.

    The WWII Transfers are perfect..... for the period these models covered, particually the first half, the rules of heraldry had not been fully established - most heraldry was geometric shapes, such as diamonds, triangles and stars, along with bands and quartering of the background.
    Have just got myself a set of these, will be doing a review and paint video soon.

      Thanks for the confirmation about the shields, that's really very helpful. It's not a period I've ever gamed/painted before but I did remember seeing shapes and patterns on shields so thought they make work. Glad I tried them anyway!
      Awesome, I'll be sure to check it out 😀👍

    Great looking kit. I love that you've used Bolt Action transfers on the shields. Particularly the Captain America one.

      It's a fantastic kit, probably my favourite of the year, really enjoyable to work with. I wasn't convinced the Bolt Action transfers were going to work but surprisingly they don't look too out of place 😀👍

      Thanks Jonathan, much appreciated! I know a few people that play Baron's War and they've all recommended it too, so it's definitely something I'll be looking into. Plus it means painting more of this series of miniatures which is always good 😀👍

      Thanks Phil! All very new to me painting for this period but really very enjoyable. I'm glad the weathering turned out to be effective and didn't ruin the miniatures 😀👍

    Here for it! Haven’t popped open my box yet, but I’ll be starting on them soon. Great video!
    And it sounds like they’re doing what they’re supposed to as far as bringing people into Baron’s War. I was thinking Saga at first, but the Outremer and the Outlaw Baron’s War expansions have me more curious too.

      That's awesome, thanks Calvin! Like I said, I was never planning to start Baron's War but having painted these and seeing the future releases has definitely got me interested. It's amazing how just one box can inspire a whole new project 😀👍

      Cheers! I honestly thought that using the decals wouldn't work but it's been ace just how positive people have been about them. Apparently shapes like that were actually used so it worked out well in the end. That's definitely going to be a future project 😅👍

    Strikes me as an ideal 'starter' type kit for those 'beginner painters' who might struggle with painting 'fleshtones/faces' and more complicated uniform types like Napoleonics or modern camo.... Painting plate armour helmets and mail is compartively easy, though you can of course 'go to town' if you have the skills. (Very basically, a 'dry-brush' of 'iron' and a lighter 'dry-brush' of 'silver' over a matt black undercoat will get you reasonable results... You can, as you have, add detail in 'brass' or 'gold' just to be flash!!) The 'tabards' clothing (is that the right term?) are also easy to paint though again, you can do as much as you like if you can... (Sheild and even 'tabard' decals are available if you fancied going that way, though in this period 'full-heraraldry wasn't what it would become a few hundred years later... Half shield colours, quartering, stripes, a 'cross' or 'X' or similar will do the job...)
    The other advantage, from a gaming point of view, is that in Mediaval skirmish you can use simple skirmish rules using just a half-dozen or so figures a side. (Anybody remember the 'Cry Havoc' (1980s????) wargame/boardgame which used personalised counters on a couple of different 'hex grid' maps? The rules couldn't have been simpler but still provided a decent game. I painted up a load of 'Essex Miniatures' Early Medieval minis and used them in place of the supplied counters. (Just keep the 'counter' under the 'slotta-bases' so you can check 'specs' if you have to? Saves fanny-ing about a rulebook ever two minutes!!! The fully-coloured individual 'character' counters even gave you the colour scheme!) This box would be ideal for something like that...
    Great review, (and painting, obviously) from Steve as usual.

      Definitely agree with this Steve. The miniatures are essentially mail armour and tabard with very little flesh. And as someone that isn't a fan of painting skintones, I very much approve! I can certainly see these being used in a wide variety of medieval games and also fantasy too, both skirmish or bigger rank and flank games. As I said, it's not really a period that I've dabbled in before but I really enjoyed painting these. Having seen some of the next releases in the series, I'm really looking forward to picking these up too. They've certainly inspired me to get involved in a new project 😀👍

      Thank you Matt! There's definitely a lot of people in the community that have bought this box, it seems to be a really popular release. Mine are all rather generic but it's been nice painting something I've never painted before 😀👍

    Your video was put together really well and your figures look great; do you plan out ahead of time which shield design (paint + decal) matches each figure or do you match them afterwards?

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, that's very kind! No, the shields are the last thing I work on when I've been painting these. The shape of the shield and the size of the decal are the biggest factors. I want to try some freehand shield patterns on the next batch of knights that I paint 😀👍

    Are they really 28mm? I think they're too small to play with GW Bretonians

    • @OnPointHQ
      @OnPointHQ  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They're 28mm yes but they are definitely a lot less chunky than Bretonnians. My plan was to use these with Oathmark infantry but they don't scale well at all despite both being 28mm 👍

    • @thomascumiskey3595
      @thomascumiskey3595 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah nah. The victrix figures have some nice individual sculpting but their designers never seem to think or care about how they look with 40 or 50 of them on a table. Too many goofy 'dynamic' poses. Just like fireforge. Perry manage to get the balance of repeatability vs movement right. These wa sets are on the right track to do the same. Mostly. That said the levy box will presumably have 6? Right arms giving a 2 fingered salute. Useless when you're trying to make larger units.
